Both consoles have their good points, but personally I think Microsoft and Sony need to stop telling us how great their systems are going to be and start showing us. We're a couple months away from the the first wave of new exclusive titles. Until they launch, any talk from these companies is just posturing and sales pitches.

Xboxone beter: design, joystick, online(xboxlive),dashboard, console name, more people to play multiaplayer games, very good exclusives, bether & cooler people behind!

Ps4 secondary console (like Ps3 was) only for exclusive titles!

And devs oriented games first on lower spec. hardware, remeber the 360 lower & Ps3 with tera, mega, gadza flops points?

Jess... I've register with gamespot in 2009... in this 5 years, I think i've posted one or two comments... I'm the silent type...  but there is one thing that urges me to come out of this silence.... it's your hair... I love your posture as well as you insight... but PLEASE COMB YOUR HAIR... go to a hairdresser... you are a beautiful girl... but your hair... jesus... don't get me wrong... you are great and as I've said beautiful... but you hair needs serious work... kisses (in your mouth, if I could)

Sony fanboys will say it is not marginal... probably followed by a bunch of "XBone sucks" comments.

In reality, they are pretty similar... kind of  like all the devs say.

First and foremost, let's be honest here and note that these "next gen" consoles are really more like gen 1.5. If they were next gen they'd be on par with a mid to high end PC like the last gen PS3 and XBOX 360 were. Since that is not cost effective, and they decided to make a PC with low specs the next gen consoles, which yes one has DDR3 and the other DDR5, but they are still both low end PCs with nearly the same hardware. It is going to come down to the games. I have seen games on both consoles, so far I would give Ryse Son of Rome the best graphics between the two consoles, though I know the PS4 will have very good graphics when they release one of their AAA games.

Okay I just came here to comment on the title, but I doubt it is marginal when Microsoft, stupidly decided to fit the Xbox One with "oh-so-not-next-gen" GDDR3 memory. The entire pool of memory for both system and graphics on the PS4 is GDDR5 and that bandwidth, is important.

I own neither console, an some might argue that GDDR5 has been around for ages, but since Sony decided to stuff 8GB of GGDR5 in there which is also used as System memory, you don't see that often, so it is pretty-next gen.

As for GDDR3... I think Microsoft were aiming for "Laptops-built-4-years-ago-gen" and yet people still bought a mandatory camera that accompanies a glorified PVR with an elevated price-tag.

I don't understand Humans.

I'm more of a retail purchase person and rarely buy during STEAM sales. But you did bring up the point on how quick STEAM will have a sale on a certain game.

During the Christmas sales (2013) Walking Dead season 2 was launched. Being a fan, I purchased it right away at $25. A few days before new years it was on sale for $20. Small discount but never the less I felt jipped and should have waited since I didn't even begin playing the game right away but because it was new, I didn't expect it to be on sale so soon.

Similar specs....why is the xbox cost 100 more? Not to mention monthly fee to play online. Money grubbing scum Microsoft.

cratecruncher

I admit I've become a Steam Sale junkie.  Like Pavlov's dog, I start to salivate in April and October at the coming discounts.  At this point I'd never even think about paying $60 for a game I can get for $7 a year later.  That would be kinda stupid.  Apparently millions of Steam members agree.

Please please please tell me you work these systems!!!!!!!! PC, ps4, xbox1, wiiu, ps vita and so on. Because if you don't, I don't understand why your own here. I mean these sites COULD be for people who can't decide on what to buy. But there are better sites for that. Everybody's comparing apples to oranges. It's like saying a truck is better then a car. There made for totally different things. Everything is made by a vision, for the people who want it OR for a quick buck!!!!! That is for everybody to decide. It's all about facts and what you like, that is it. So ether your caught up in what you buy or your working for these systems trying to sell. If your caught up please stop and have fun with what you buy. Stop presauding people into stuff. If your working for these companies make that money, but that field is not for me.

Or buy the PS4... and actually be notified when your battery is getting low on your controller... Instead of MS advanced machine: Controller just flat dies... no notifications at all... it's pretty handy when your playing online, since you can pause it right???

Cmon MS... lame

The power gap between this generation isn't as great as the original Xbox vs the PS2 - and look how the PS2 did...

Differences are marginal? In that case I'll buy the cheaper PS4. Thanks Microsoft!!

Yeah... not having to pay a $100 more for a mandatory Kinect feature is marginal Microsoft... and Vista was the best OS to date.

As for the BF4 bit, I ditched the game a few weeks back.  Haven't missed it.

Well Microsoft says that it has better games but, Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studios haven't even touched the ps4 yet, so don't get to comfy Microsoft. And Sony actually stays committed to it's franchises. Uncharted 1 was only metacritically around an 8.5. Knowing Microsoft that's the type of franchise they would have thrown away but you see what happens when you stay committed. Uncharted 2 and even 3 were some of the best games of the last generation.

Well 2014 for Microsoft is starting out the same as 2013.  Completely bat**** crazy and out of touch with reality.

There's two ways to look at hardware differences.  1.  Is the notion that if it isn't a generation difference, then it 'isn't much'.

2. Is the fact that within generations there can be massive differences

Microsoft is claiming #1 when it's clearly #2.  It's quite dishonest.  There is a MASSIVE difference in power within the generation.

But there again there's even more subtlety.  How does the effectual massive difference happen?  Well it's not just raw power, but also archtitecutal superiority of the PS4, or to be more precise the ESRAM bottleneck of 32 mb's instead of 128 mb's that then lowers the Xbox One below its stated specs that has the effect of widening the difference between the two consoles.

You can do that math easily for the framebuffer.  Resolution Width x Resolution Height x bytes per pixel quality /1024/1024.  The number cannot exceed 32mb's, and really you need it to be quite a bit UNDER 32 mb's because you need more then just the framebuffer going through there.  If you notice, most next gen frame buffers with a quality of 24-40 bytes per pixel basically can't fit in 32 mb's.  Even at 16 bytes per pixel.  A 1080p framebuffer sucks up ~31.64 mb's.  Leaving nothing for anything else.  Hard to use the ESRAM to boost bandwidth with ~0.35 mb's left over.

Sure you get more bandwidth then DDR3 alone with ESRAM, but the ESRAM is too small to hold a next-gen deferred rendered 1080p framebuffer of any significant quality.  That's why for next-gen deferred rendering games the Xbox One will have 600p-900p resolutions.  Deferred rendering dyanmic lighting, around on the PC since last decade, IS a huge part of next-gen.  It's used in all the next gen engines.  It's used in many of the multiplatform games...especially open world or semi-open world.  GTA, AC, BF, CoD, etc, etc, etc.  Xbox One will always be behind on these and many more games.

Oh and by merely having ESRAM it makes the coding more difficult then without it.  So you have more complexity and a bottleneck, that lowers Xbox One's overall effectual power...then being measured against the PS4 which has it's fairly more raw power with none of these limitations, as well as other architectural advantages.  More ROPS, More ACE's, etc, etc, etc.

How Microsoft can even claim there isn't much power difference when there are already games out which are on both and the PS4 holds a performance (FPS), quality (graphical effects), and resolutions (higher resolution) all in one.

It's like saying my car cost less then your car, and it is faster, gets better gas mileage, and can stop on a dime.

We already have 1080p vs 720p games.  What's worse is that what the Xbox One does poorly, is what is most popular with gamers.  The games everyone wants the most will have the biggest disparities. Sure a dev could maybe not optimize a PS4...just get it up and running, and then spend the other 99 percent of the time trying to catch up the Xbox One and then this lessens the gap, but that's unlikely to happen often, if at all.  Theoretically it could happen though.

But overall it's just amazing Microsoft has already come out in 2014 and said 'nothing's changed'.  We're still the lunatic company oblivious to reality.

@StormyJoe  Err, 'most devs' have gone on record singing the PS4s praise.** What you'll not hear devs go on record about is how 1) Xb1 is a less powerful console. The rumored specs are out there. 2) a significant percentage of the xb1s power has been reserved for the kinect. I don't know about every one else, but that is not the console I'm looking for in next gen.

@ndmq ps4 has pay to play online too; ps4 basically loses a lot of what made the ps3 so freaking awesome.

@Sevenizz problem with that in that generation ps2 had more exclusives. if you noticed alot of devs are doing away with exclusived games

uglypinkmoose

@jmc88888 dude unless you put the games side by side you can't even tell...

Xbox One games still look amazing so you can talk tech mumbo jumbo all you want but the average person won't even notice what looks better and it'll end up being decided by the games.

The PS3 was more powerful than the 360 but that only really had an effect on exclusives. Otherwise what console a game is better on was almost completely random. The technical superiority of the PS3 certainly didn't make it a more successful console.

The 720p 1080p thing might change some peoples minds on what to purchase but I doubt very many and once you own a console you don't generally have access to even see the other version of the game.

While the PS4 is more powerful  I just don't see it mattering much to the average consumer because the fact is Ryse looks as good as anything out there right now and it's impressive.

I think the 100 dollar higher price point of the Xboxone will play a bigger role in what people buy.

The PS3 ended strong because of it's lineup of games.

It was a harder console to develop for and it was ridiculously priced at launch.

Gaming history in general has proven higher tech doesn't mean your console is more successful.

If Microsoft doesn't take exclusives more seriously this time around though they just need to hire someone who actually knows what their doing..

The original Xbox kept me busy enough to not worry about Sony exclusives. Every once in a while I'd pick up a PS2 game - but the quality just wasn't there and I'd go back to the Xbox. Same thing happened with the PS3. This time I'm not even gonna bother getting a PS4 - for me, it just isn't worth it.

Metallicwolf29

Can't help it. Do you really think today's games are better than the past? Don't let the media brainwash you into thinking today's games are significantly better than before

Metallicwolf29

Ps2 had better games than ps3 and xbox 360. Compare the arguably best game for ps3 against the arguably best game for ps2. Here are some examples.

(Ps2) MGS3 > MGS4

Gran turismo 3 >>>> gran turismo 5&6

Resident evil 4 > RE 5&6

Final Fantasy 10 >>>>> FF13

@uglypinkmoose@jmc88888Ryse does not look as good as Killzone Shadow Fall... Nothing on the Xbox One sadly comes close to KZ:SF in terms of graphics and optimization.

The difference is their... Especially if your a PC gamer that plays around with  texture quality, shadow detail, radial blur qualities, resolution, AA, reflections, etc because your eyes are trained to see what graphics properties are there and what graphics properties are missing or downgraded.

Xbox One isn't giving me a good reason to purchase it, I already have 2 performance superior machines called a PC and PS4. No really if all I want to do is play games at the best quality and already have an entertainment device called a laptop why else should I buy a Xbox One? The only thing I see that could ever make me buy a Xbox One is Gears of War and something as crazy as being able to mod the games (Preferably with approved mods to avoid problems) and even that isn't worth the $500...

@uglypinkmoose @jmc88888 Microsoft has an issue with staying committed to their franchises, If it isn't forza gears or Halo then the future of it seems bleak.

@Metallicwolf29 I won't say its totally bad but previous generation games are not really that good that it could still take over today's games. Yes previous generation games are good but nowadays games are way improved man!

@SevenizzYeah, the PS2 was a HUGE disaster. No one wanted it because it lacked the power of the mighty original Xbox and GameCube. I mean the PS2 only sold what... 160 million+ units? (the most successful console of all time)  What a fail console.

dark_rage864

@Metallicwolf29stop living in the past, it's good to play old good games but newer games will always have the technology advantage.

Metallicwolf29
Metallicwolf29

That actually made me laugh. I did visit many ps2 games on my backward compatible ps3. Even if ps2 was "underpowered" it still was leagues better than the obese xbox and the GameCube. My point is that while graphics have certainly improved, the quality of gaming has been on decline since the ps3 and xbox360 launch.

Sevenizz

The PS2 was an underpowered borefest compared to the original Xbox and even the GameCube. If you tell me you regularly revisit it's library, you lie.

dark_rage864
dark_rage864

@Metallicwolf29you comparing small amount of games, what about all the new IP's came out on the PS3/Xbox 360? PS2 was great back in the day but now we have much more games being made.

uglypinkmoose
uglypinkmoose

@louisvign @uglypinkmoose @jmc88888 Well from what I've seen Ryse looks better than Killzone but I still play games that came out before I was even born(I'm 24) so graphics aren't really something I judge closely.

I don't own either console yet because I don't care about any of the games that are coming out or have been announced enough to drop the money so for me it all depends on what game announcement wins me over.

I'll probably have both within the next 5 or 6 years anyways because I thought my 360 and my PS3 were well worth their price tags. I don't think I have to worry about neglecting one.

But it's all just so much money so I'm not buying anything in till a next gen game impresses me.

I do think the Xboxone doesn't really have a right to cost more though.... I mean it's because of Kinect but if your going to add in something like that you can't expect everyone to want to pay more for it.

uglypinkmoose
uglypinkmoose

@idk95 @uglypinkmoose @jmc88888 I know that's what I'm hoping will change this gen after the PS3 proved how smart it is to hold on to a franchise(I thought Nintendo already proved that but owell) They did put a crap load of money into exclusives for the Xboxone though so they might get it now.
