GS News - Titanfall Install Is HUGE, Is Xbox One Product of the Year?
Xbox One snags a ‘Product of the Year 2014’ award and finally gets Twitch TV streaming, while Titanfall has a massive install, but just HOW big?

Microsoft paid for the PotY title! I know because PotY used to be clients in my previous employment. Their business model is actually a neat marketing trick;
1 - companies are invited to submit product(s) for the 'award'.
2 - each submitted product has to pay PotY for entry into the consumer survey - and for every stage there after. So if you don't submit and pay, your product is not considered (Sony, Nintendo etc) and therefore your product could be the only entry in a given category.
3 - with nothing to compare against in that category, the Xbox would have 'won' by default. Sony, Nintendo etc may have entered but I doubt it?!
4 - Microsoft pay PotY more money to actually 'win' the 'award' and for use of the PotY logo (which apparently drives up sales through consumer confidence).
5 - as a result of all this, Microsoft get to boast about an award for the Xbox One (albeit an expensive one) and PotY get free advertising on Microsoft merchandising.
So winning PotY doesn't mean anything. It's basically paying for a logo to help boost consumer confidence in a particular product in the hope it will drive up sales.
Product of the Year... my ass! Who was the runner up? Skittles? or maybe that sweet new hoover bagless vacuum?...they definitely didn't include the PS4 in the lineup
This isn't the award for best selling console, or even best console. It's product of the year, which could have any manner of criteria. The XBox one does do some innovative things. Nothing anybody wants, but nonetheless it does them lol.
Jess, you are one sexy thing!! For the 1st time in my life I'm in love. Don't tell that to my wife. I'll be in the dog house.. Lol
But for you Jess I'll be in the dog house all year.
Let me holla at you?
1. Doesn't PS4 have twitch already? When the hell are they going to put their new console owners first? Geez this is sad....
2. Well for me it's all according. Am I getting more or less for double the space. As pathetic as M$ been to their fans I will sit and wait and not start crying foul just yet. For Cripes sake there is enough reason already without Titanload er fall.. =)
3. Completely unfair. No one can call it this early. Just sounds desparate. Gods damn M$ did you have sex with Satan and spawn EA games because sure as hell looks as if they got their PR stupidity from you guys....
4. Take 2 and 3 into account then yeah absolutely they sounding desparate. With their bad PR who wouldn't make that move?
Pathetic the fan base is likely the most intelligent people involved in Xbox One... not it's developers....sigh....
How MS even managed to sell that system to anyone will forever be a mystery to me. I wouldn't play it even if I got it for free... I'd sell it on ebay!
What a joke of a survey. No information on other products surveyed, how it was conducted, why it was conducted 2 months into the year, etc. Sounds like complete B.S.
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the 40,000 people surveyed wasn't just the entire MS staff :P
I am buying my xbox one from the United Kingdom and getting it shipped over and also going to get the ps4 as well so I will have both systems.
The X1 was way over priced in the UK, and you could reasonably argue it still is considering currency exchange rates.
X1 is an engineering feat. Whether it impresses consumers, that is another matter altogether. Lots of interesting and even good products fail.
All you people trashing Xbone......give me some actual reasons. For Launch games the lineup was not bad at all. They play all the third party games just as good as PS4 and look amazing. It has some hiccups but nothing major. Everyone gives the kinect hell, but many of you people trashing it are the ones who love "game videos". You can already record podcast type videos with the kinect and post all over the internet via the skydrive. With PS4 the seperate eyecam must be bought. It's a pretty damn sweet product for me overall so far.
I love buying tangible games only to have them downloaded and installed to my hard-drive, don't you? 40 gigs? So if I get my midnight release version, I'll be lucky to play it by 3 a.m. Why just a price cut in the UK? UK must be really special to MS or something.
Nice tempo and energy today Jess, nicely done.
The Titanfall install "debate" intrigues me as it's a dust-up over non-news. 40GB is a large install but as others have pointed out, that's the digital (as in no optical disc) one. This includes not only the core game but all of the data assets as well. Such data assets include textures and level data, etc.
With the disc-based install, the core game (think executable and data that always needs to be loaded) assets are loaded on the console but level data can remain on the disc. Hence the smaller 20GB install footprint in that case. This is in line with other games.
That all being said, why is this size such an issue and a surprise? We're always clamoring for more functionality, better AI, more-better graphics and such. No offense folks, that's going to result in a larger install footprint.
The reaction to the X1 price reduction amuses me as well. From day one folks have been sniping MS for their price point. So, MS now announces a price reduction and folks are bitching and ridiculing MS about that. I especially love the fact that some individuals are stating that it means that MS is in dire financial straights. (Seriously? MS has a huge market share in the business software world. Also, they're making almost as much money off of their Android-related patents.)
With the X1, MS has a large margin with the original price and therefore has room to work the price and still make a nice profit off of each unit sold. By the six-month point I wouldn't be surprised to see that the price is a little less than the cost of a PS4/Eye bundle. At that point they can claim "price-parity".
>Nothing anybody wants
@CPTCUDDLES LOL of the year~
No they don't.. some company that takes consumer's opinions and forms them into awards, this place is in the UK, gives the award.
@Kinguard73 PS4 has a half baked version of Twitch. It's extremely limited compared to the Xbox One's version. Just because it's on there doesn't mean it's good.
The PlayStation 3 launched on November 17, 2006, and the 60GB models were sold for the scandalous price of $600
@azwildcats585 Well least you only wasted 500 dollars for a couple of exclusives that apparently will also be on PC grats.
I pose this question to you. Have any products failed that this company has named product of the year? Or have they gone on to sell REALLY well, partly, because of it.
@dbene ya....but it doesnt play games just as good as ps4....anybody that thinks it does is absolutely clueless...you probly think obamacare is good for America, you idiot.
@dbene 1. DRM they backtracked on tried to take your rights as owners of your games away.
2. The requited extra 100 dollars for a doorstop er Kinect most could have done without and is still mostly worthless except as a NSA spybot.
3. You paid 100 dollars more for a system proven to be weaker then it's competitor.
4. They continually insults most of their consumers intelligence by making excuses at recent statements/press releases (except you apparently)
You want to be used that is fine for me and my crew? It's PS4. If I knew where you lived I'd have sent some K-Y for future M$ 'love'.
@furrionn I you are not trolling, then don't watch.
She is just fine. I like her just fine.
@furrionn and a massive Xbox One hater.
@Pheonix985 Games on Xbox One become playable when they are around 5% installed, therefore you can play the game without interference as it finishes installing.
@Pheonix985 they would have to cut the price by another 100 pounds just to get it down to the price of the console in the US.
@TimberWolf_CLT With 160+ GB of space on the hard drive unavailable, right out of the gate you're looking at fairly limited space. If someone prefers digital versions and Titanfall is an average size, that's less than ten games that can fit on the hard drive!
Personally I have a 60GB fat PS3 and have juggled my library for years, deleting installs on games I've finished and won't come back to for a while to make room for the new. It's not a crisis, but in the world of hard drives 500GB is nothing, so to go with that size for a console expected to last beyond the end of the decade is inexcusable. I guarantee the first revamped models will have at least twice as much space. Ultimately early adopters are getting punished again.
@CPTCUDDLES @dbeneUniversal healthcare is always good. The must buy Kinect and the Xbone under performing on graphics are bad. Calling someone an idiot for having an opinion he backs up is not necessary. I am most likely moving from 360 to a PS4 in the near future for @dbene's legit reasons and the option of playing some mmo's on console,
