GS News - Russia Wants to be Good Guys + All Games are Games!
David Cage says no one should define what is and isn’t a game, Russia are making more patriotic games and Square Enix have started their own crowdfunding platform!

I once played a video game in which the only meaningful user interaction was making a choice between two options about halfway through the story. (The "non-meaningful" interaction was clicking to advance the cut scenes and conversations.) I think that was pushing the boundaries of "game".
Since someone mentioned Cow Clicker below, I have to also throw Progress Wars into the conversation. Also created as a satire, and rather amusing to play a few levels (despite being intentionally non-fun).
Well, of course Two Souls and Heavy Rain are video games. They have images (video) and you interact with them to produce desired results (game). The idea that they, and games like them (Walking Dead, for example) aren't actually games displays a short memory regarding the medium's history. Graphical adventure games were once the dominant form of PC game, and those usually required the player to perform a specific set of actions in a specific order to get the tightly scripted narrative to progress. The gameplay consisted mostly or entirely of figuring out what the creators wanted the player to do to get the story to progress.
This isn't exclusive to adventure games. Most video games work on the same principle of the player figuring out what needs to be done in order to progress to the next chapter, level, map and so forth.
The "game X isn't a video game" is a "True Scotsman" logical fallacy. The fallacy involves redefining something in such a way as to eliminate specific examples the speaker disapproves of, generally using circular reasoning.
"No Scotsman puts sugar in his porridge."
"My cousin Angus is a Scotsman, and he puts sugar in his porridge."
"Well, no *true* Scotsman puts sugar in his porridge."
If it has images displayed on a video screen, and the player can interact with those images to have an effect on them, it's a video game. Adventure games are video games if they have video images. Interactive movies, where game play involves choosing which branch the narrative takes, are video games.
Cow Clicker, in which the only activity was clicking on an image of a cow, is a video game. It's an intentionally terrible game created as a satire of free-to-play microtransaction supported games, but it it is a game.
As with the "are video games art" discussion (answer: Yes, all video games are art), what a person often means when they say "X isn't a video game" (or "X isn't art") is that it isn't good.
video game - a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a television screen or other display screen.
That's really all there is to it. As long as the game has you interacting with images on a screen you are playing a video game. Interestingly, the definition has the word in it, so here's your definition for "game":
game - a form of play or sport, esp. a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck.
I've yet to play a video game that does not meet all the requirements of a video game.
If your videos are not loading, you have Adblock Plus enabled...Gamespot now puts ads at the beginning of some videos, and adblock blocks them so the entire video won't start
Videos don't seem to be loading on this newly implemented website, a few teething problems I assume.
Why did Gamespot think they had to make their websit more original or whatever they were going for. This new format is garbage. Don't fix something thats not broken.
Sup!!! Liking the new website! it feels like when franklin moved to his new house in vinewood.... Neeaaat.
Create a game where Russia beats USA!!!
Would love to see that....
Or at least, one in the cold war (East vs West Germany, the short conflict), Hungary's revolution...
I'm not a fan of this new site, I had to search around just to find this video...it looks cheap and unfinished, the other offered a lot more on each page
this new design is more chaosy than older one... its somethow throw me away the old one was nice to eyes and comfortible...its a little funny also like shity news paper blog or something....but maybe the first impresion of can't catch immersion...the video somewhere there the ads there like the job of not profesional...i'm not educated in web design etc...but this need a little some more work..
Although the idea of crowd-funded games liberating devs from publishers sounds great I'm not against SE doing something similar. If we can get a great indie game based on one of those IPs (Soul Reaver, I'm looking at you) it's a win-win for everybody.
Russians are problably fed up of being the bad guys in every shooter since the dawn of mankind so this was going to happen eventually.
I agree with DC. Why should we bother to define what a game is when it would only mean to get the same old experiences every time? Hooray for crazy games!!!
I'm in two minds about this.
While I prefer the term "interacive entertainment", there are things that are both 'interactive' and 'entertaining', but don't offer enough of what defines a game. The word "game" would imply a set of rules a player must follow in order to reach a goal. Things like Dear Esther don't really qualify as a game, but it could still be interactive entertainment (if it managed to actually entertain people instead of boring them to death).
The irony of the people using ad-block actually been shown ads
I personally don't use ad-block, and I've loaded this video twice without seeing an ad.
If you don't like ads, you can usually just refresh the page and you have a chance of the video loading without the ad. And that way Gamespot still get to make money, and they get to continue to make more videos for our entertainment.
Yeah, Adblocker stopped working, the videos wont play with it on. But if they are mashing us with 30 seconds of advertising dont use always the same video ad. Jesus Christ!!!
all my Plug-in is all right and Updated but still there's no Video to play only black screen, thats funny new gamespot sucks
@greater_birdwas it critical path?
@Shimonhead Aww man that sucks, but even after disabling for gamespot videos still aren't loading :(
@Shaltan Have you tried turning it off and on again?
@Shaltan Have you tried loading it on other web browsers?
@FF_XPert Try if this videos are available on youtube you can download them there.
@FF_XPert they are joking indeed
@diabolik_023 Strange, I'm viewing it at Mozilla
@UNCStriker88 Yeah, It doesn't make much sense cuz they already changed the site just a few years back and I hated they redesign at first back then too. I eventually came to like it though, but it wasn't this drastically changed either so I guess we'll see.
@UNCStriker88 Offered more like what? It took me 10 seconds to find the video.
@UNCStriker88 I couldn't agree more, this feels more like a cheap blog than GameSpot...
@angry_cowtipper Before a 2 min 15 sec video -- the ads are nearly a quarter of the experience.
@thenightmare12 you have to disable adblock... Gamespot, bastards!
I hope they add some variety to their adds or these vids are just not worth the annoyance of watching same ad over and over again
@thenightmare12 do you have a pop-up blocker or ad-block
