Looks like "Early Access" is going to be the norm. We used to call it Alpha Testing, but now they've suckered people into paying for the privilege of getting into the Alpha. Can't say I'm surprised, people were buying into the Open Beta with Cash Shops and No Wipes for a while now.
It makes sense that the alpha testers are being kept on hush hush basis. They don't want story elements, unreleased game elements being released. Plus, since this may have a new engine, they want to minimize hackers, because all it takes is one person to dell the early game build to a hacker and the game is ruined.
In most cases I like to wait for my games to be finished before buying and playing them. The only exception is assetto corsa right now.
ROFL @ Australian remark. Australians are awesome and great drink buddies. Had the great pleasure of having shore leave few times and meeting a bunch on a tour in Europe. still in touch and plans to meet later this year.
didn't know you were Aussie. anyway, great segment.
i cant even get billions let alone millions on GTA single player, the only money i have for online if the 500k that everyone got from the update. I'm not happy with online due to the fact nothing is avaliable until you reach certain levels. I would also like to play online games alone now and again, but it appears you have to be with other people and i find it a little crap.
Don't care. Minecraft did it though not through steam and it really worked for them.
Silent Alpha Testing:
Yeah right. "Hey guys now you're not allowed to tell everyone how terrible our game is just yet. Remember we are still in alpha/beta mode and *cough* improvements can be made *cough* before release."
GTA Online Scam:
Well I guess only Rockstar is allowed to scam people into paying real money for their fake money. Guess they're ticked about it working the other way around. Seriously, you guys made bank on your game. WHO CARES? lol
Anyone whose been an avid player of GTAO and logged on after the rape knows the immeasurable damage R* did to their game. I was in a crew of 250 in which more than half played religiously, last night 80% were gone. My friends list had 30+ players that played 5 hours or more a night- last night there were 6 on.
The problem is R* created a boring mission system with no rewards because they want to force you to pay for their overpriced ingame money cards- without the DNS modders this game would have started to spiral long ago, the modders actually SAVED the game.
So Rockstar is banning players who 'counterfeit' money in a game about stealing cars, robbing banks and smuggling weapons. How does this not fit right into the game? What's the problem?
As someone who has been playing Mechwarrior Online for some time now, I don't agree with AAA companies utilizing early access. The game (MWO) was "officially released" late last year, but still seems as if it should be in beta. Part of the problem could be that it is a free-to-play game, and seems more like a quick cash grab than anything else, but that's simply my opinion.
What I find tremendously sad is that Indie developers are beginning to make higher quality, with higher replay value games than the AAA companies. Three years ago I wouldn't have dreamed of touching an Indie game, and would have scoffed at the recommendation of one from a friend, now I feel that way toward many of the AAA titles (except Naughty Dog games!).
Aren't we already playing betas of many games? It's now customary to put out an unfinished product, watch comment boards, then make patches that may or may not fix the problem. It's to the point that user reviews vary dramatically depending on how soon after release they're written.
Ha. Australia, worlds most awesome prison. We should all be so lucky. Hope your handling that heat wave well Jess.
Yay, I am SOO HAPPY to have my Tomb Raiding Jess McDonell Back! YAY!!! Chris did a great job in your absence too! I hope Jess McDonell will talk about the Killzone sneak peak of their new upcoming multiplayer maps
To be honest I was so damn exited about Titanfall when I first saw the gameplay and stuff.....but more it goes with news and videos stuff I think I'm going to pass on this "Bull*hit" game :\ ....just imagine 32 or more REAL players with no AI or bots, how good the game would have been....
1. I could care less cause I won't do it period. =P
2. Alpha is ment to keep people quiet. I'd be worried if they did that at Beta.
3. Ban those who create money and rep. Though I wish R* would sell rep currency plus shark cards heh. I will say I got the tank really through an exploit but they neither removed it nor punished me. Hey R* if you want to piunish me take it and we'll call it even steven eh? =)
Great picture for showing off your aussie heritage.
As for CoD joining alpha, seriously? I have yet to see anything ground breaking in their engine in the last 10 (...12?) games since Modern Warfare (Minus the dog), all I really see is a money grab like the failed War Z except tweens 'will' waste exuberant sums of money on never to be finished goods.
At last the darkened clouds break, and the sullen echoes of an endless night fade away with the arrival of the sun.
The irony of this GTA news is completely hilarious. How dare they counterfeit money in a game where robbing banks, and killing random people for cash is encouraged.
Okay you blew up the whole city and killed everyone while stealing everything in site, but we draw the line on hacking in our game. After all of the good morals we've taught you, you go and do this?
Stop talking about GTA!!!
This thing is destroying an entire generation, nations of vagabonds and lovers of crime are rising! Destroyed generation that doesn't appreciate the true heroes that were the soldiers of the glorious military dictatorship.
CENSORSHIP NOW! For a fair government that deprive us of this marginalia.
Welcome back Jess!
I will avoid GTA Online until Rockstar confirms that the cheaters and hackers are gone. A couple of days after Christmas I was able to join without Xbox Live Gold and somebody instantly gave me 1 billion dollars, the cheaters are ruining the game :( It's a shame, because before that I was having a lot of fun in Online.
AAA developers can try to dip into the 'Early Access' market all they like, but they won't be getting any of my money (unless of course they cleverly conceal their identities by creating straw man subsidiaries). I see 'Early Access' as a means by which developers can create a product that they otherwise never could afford, not a means for financially robust companies to avert the risk associated with making a product that could potentially be unsuccessful.
Great to see you back "in the saddle"!
My only input is on Titanfall: It's been interesting reading forum posts on various sites and seeing the reaction to the Alpha test restrictions. There are a lot of self-entitled folks out there that don't seem to understand product development at all. A company is actually allowed to implement NDAs and restrictions without it actually being an evil empire.
However one point that keeps appearing is in regards to the timing of the Alpha. No offense to the developer, but staging Alpha testing in January when your product's due in March IS NOT the best way to give folks "warm fuzzies" that it will release on time. On top of that, they'd better Beta soon. Otherwise, what will be the point because there won't be enough time to incorporate findings from it.
Off topic, but you folks might be interested: The Planetary Society is doing a sign up for folks to put their names on a sample-return mission to an asteroid. If you're interested: http://www.planetary.org/get-involved/messages/bennu/
I wonder how deep and far back they will go with their tracing of cheater money in GTA Online. A lot of people exploited for loads and loads of money, massive amounts, way back in the first weeks.
I kinda got bored with it and haven't played in ages, and admittedly I kinda wish I had just used exploits for money so I would have experienced more of the content before getting bored.
First of all, welcome back Jess!
My biggest issue with Ubi putting Ghost Recon Online on early access is that the game has already been available for people to play since August 2012. Does that make this version "early, early, early access"?
I'm going to have to try GTA V one day. I want it on PC, though. This comment was way too reasonable. I'll never get on feedbackula. :(
@timoteo2k1 What have they done exactly? Banned people or just removed all the modded content? I really don't understand their approach with the online portion here either. Everything they have done has been against freedom and fun, and in favour of grinding and restricting options. You're right when you say the exploiting is what has kept the game going, because that's the only fun thing it offers - allowing cool vehicles in your garage, painting police vehicle different colours, replaying a fun mission once again after it's finished - very simple things that are fun and non disruptive... but they still eliminate them for... reasons unknown?
As though the initial launch didn't scare off enough people, and the crappy filter options scared off the majority of the rest (no way to choose a particular mission, or even select GTA race over regular race, and the elimination of some of GTA IV's most fun game modes,), now they are getting rid of the fun for the exploiters who probably make up about 80% of the online community for that game now, because their the only ones allowed to have any fun...
Seriously I don't understand WTF Rockstar is doing, they seem to be trying SO hard to ruin the online. I've been done with it since the release month, and they are only making it worse from the sound of things.
Not to mention running down old ladies who just had their prescription filled.
@youre_a_sheep Yeah but most betas are free. You just sign up and may or may not get picked. Early Access you actually pay the developer to play and beta test their game for them.
@sonystarkwhere can you find a hot gaming girl like Jess McDonell? She is even hotter than that blonde girl in the ad for the Playstation Camera!!!!
@sonystark I Accept Your Offer
@sonystark After me
@Diegoctba Your insanity is endogenous.
@jasonakI learned early February last year what E3 stood for. What is a AAA?
@Coseniath I said the very same thing! lol
@coaltango only on origin man!
@coaltango EA is the publisher, so probably not, steam being a competitor to their own origin service and all.
@yoda101280 their wallets.
@nayce54@jasonakIn the industry, 'AAA' is an adjective used to describe large-scale development studios with massive multi-million dollar budgets. Technically speaking they have no less right to dabble in the Early Access market than any other developer, but they usually can afford to invest in the development of a new product without doing so.
