GS News - PS4/Xbox One Are Energy Hogs; Microsoft Says Kinect Stays!
Microsoft reaffirm their dedication to Kinect, the NRDC is bothered by how much power the PS4 and Xbox One use, and what’s on the way for Xbox?
Microsoft doesn't care about energy, all they care is about money. Whether burning your house down while you sleep because you leave electronics on even in standby mode, all they care about is money.
I wonder what thye'd make of the coal fired power plant I use to run my Desktop?
As with all thing console and PC, you need to add all three consoles together to come close to PC ;)
I'm not surprised that new consoles use more power than the old ones, that's always the case. 15 watts is one quarter of a standard light bulb.
Jess, your shirt is especially cute, but what character is it?
the ps4 and x1 use as much power as a mid-tier current pc. Who would have thought that possible? LOL
Yeah I've been battling that question to stand-by or not to standby-mode .... that is the question. Hmmmm who cares if saying XBOX on is cool. I'm leaning towards turning it off until I realized my family uses the console and I can't see them unplugging and plugging it in when not it use so I guess I have to keep it on.
The best thing is for XBOX is update their OS to include a turn off option that doesn't put it into sleep.
If I'm missing something about standby and turning it off please comment. If there are options I don't know about I'd like to know. :)
Standby Mode Is For Lazy People.
Yes, I knew of the power consumption for game play & standby for the X1 and PS4 and the Wii U being super energy efficient.
Just turn the damn thing off, you environment wrecking, lazy, thoughtless [you fill in the blank].
Why are people so lazy that they have to use voice commands to turn the thing on? Why not use the controller?
The PS4 has an option to go into stand-by, but why? I just turn it off. Why is standby offered to begin with.
New IP for the X1
I think it's great. That will be Microsoft's niche--having great exclusives (assuming they'll make great ones).
For an extra $100 US, I'll get the Kinect for anything it has to offer now and in the future--the fear of loss is great motivator.
Thank you Jess & company. The highlight of my long day. Now I can go to bed happy.
More hard-hitting, unbiased journalism. So MS gets crap if they stick to their guns, and they get crap when they listen to what consumers want. Looks like the tech world's favorite punching bag is still good for for a few more blows and http://goo.gl/ejqD3q
I don't think that the success or failure of the Kinect is tied to whether it is unbundled from the system, but rather to whether MS can produce compelling reasons to use one (like some good, non-dance based games maybe?), which it has failed to do adequately thus far.
This whole power thing is so stupid, its like 4 bucks a year oh my god what will we do. Also look at it this way more power means more jobs they just need to make it smart like solar/wind and not fossil fuels. I myself and willing to pay the 4 dollars a year I know I know it cuts into my soda budget but I think I will survive.
PS4/Xbox One Are Energy Hogs : i just swich the thing off ....... simple never ever leave stuff on standby
i just realized, that despite jess saying "today is the 19th of may", the video was recorded on the 20th. now i'm curious about how often does that mess up her work days :P
It sounds like a lot of power until you compare it to a PC which makes every other console sound like a Tesla Model S. That watt usage of a console probably amounts for only $10 a year on your electricity bill.
I always thought RTS on console was a bit weird. :/ Then again, I never really gave them a chance. As for the Twitch purchase, I really hope we'll have time for pitchforks if we end up needing them. Things could go down quickly.
That does seem like a lot of power. Does anyone know any good comparisons to put this in perspective?
@youre_a_sheep Who even uses old school light bulbs any more? Zombies?
@roninfury You mean the guy with the crushing bone disease?? Then yeah. A little! lol
@SaintsRowLA Just turn the damn thing off, you environment wrecking, lazy, thoughtless *kind hearted man*.
awww thank you... I love you too.
@shinjuki Tinfoil-hat-wearers unite!
@evelynben Mocking consumers while responding to weak sales for a product we said we did not want is not listening. "In five years people will laugh at the idea of not having voice commands." MS is like that guy who says "I'm sorry if you were offended" while denying having done anything wrong.
@evelynben Who ever claimed hard-hitting unbiased journalism? This excellent show only ever claimed to be Jess's top five news stories.
@KillaGinjaNinja I concur, a control device that only works 80% of the time might as well be 0%. Controller buttons work 100% which is why they are fun.
@KSSuperhero Good thing no one has worried so far about my 750w power supply in my computer, haha.
@RedLegZeff Produced by potatoes.
@Trickymaster No, this was about sleep/none active state.
I have a hefty 1200Watt PSU in my PC, but when in sleep mode, my PC use about 4 watts of power. Roughly three times less than the mentioned consoles.
Console on standby- 15ish watts
Consoles playing games- 120-170 watts
(not including wii u)
I hope that kinda puts it in a rough comparison
I'm happy you have a sense of humor/humour.
*kind hearted man* Thank you.
"I love you" I'm flattered. I really wish you were a woman though. I only truly love women.
Yes, that was meant to be a comical rant, similar to a comical version of pro wrestlers Rowdy Roddy Piper, Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff, or Penn Gillette, or me from years past.
True, I wouldn't use standby mode, I truly didn't mean to insult people who do, and I apologize if anyone took it personally.
They record and archive all phone calls, e-mails, texts, physically intercept newly purchased electronics to install spyware, have agents undercover in World of Warcraft, etc. They admit to all of this. How do you manage to ignore that while mocking those who don't? Why if your IQ is above 60 would you think Kinect cameras and mics are the one piece of tech where they'd say "no, let's not bother utilizing that particular chance to spy"?
@uberjannie @Trickymaster Sweet! 1200 watts, what is that quad-sli headroom or something? Having a power draw on standby is a great thing if it's actually taking care of all of the annoying stuff, like downloading patches and firmware without the user having to do it. I would be happy to buy extra power for that.
@PixelAddict @youre_a_sheepTell that to the thousands of victims of the Blackshades RAT who had their webcams hacked.
That would sound like a reasonable response if you believe the powers that be aren't mining personal information to use against their political enemies, which we have also already seen them do. Just ask Joe Wilson, whose now former FBI agent wife Valerie Plame had her cover blown and career ended by Bush/Cheney in retaliation for him having spoken out against the case made for the Iraq war. When Occupy Wall Street got going, spies were sent to infiltrate and monitor them.
If the powerful ever see anyone get organized enough to challenge them, they'll use the spy network to smear them, as they did Edward Snowden in retaliation for his whistleblowing.
Knowledge is power, and power is being dangerously concentrated into the hands of people who want to control speech and with it, us.
@youre_a_sheep Those who have nothing to hide, hide nothing.
If monitoring prevents bad people from doing bad things, I don't really have a problem with it.
Because when it comes down to it, I don't think They are tracking me for my Xbox Fitness workouts.
Unless you are COMPLETELY off the grid, which is obviously not the case, because you are online, then you're being tracked.
Yes, I forgot about the consoles being able to download patches etc when in sleep. PC doesn't have that AFAIK. The Cpu is either in non-active or active state. System state is either saved in RAM or swap.
