GS News - PS4 to get PS1 and PS2 emulator; Titanfall Xbox One beta confirmed!
We get the first details from the upcoming Titanfall beta, check out what could be in store for PS4 backwards compatibility, and how much money will console gamers have to fork out for Elder Scroll Online?
i cant see why anyone is mad about this. sony said ps4 wouldn't be backwards compatible and now it will be. they under promised and over delivered. thats a good buisiness policy.
Most my favorite PS2 games got HD ports, and many PS1 classics I already grabbed on the PSN store :/. . . Unless my PS3 dies I'm not gonna bother playing them on my PS4 as well.
Not sure how it is for everyone but the PS4 is fairly thin so I have no trouble having a PS3 & PS4 hooked up to the television. If you already rebought them? Don't think much on this emulation I guess, if you didn't buy the ports well.. It's awesome! :)
A real gamer always loves old games and that is also my interest I have my vita and most of the games there I play are ps1 titles or ps2 HD remakes. In my opinion still not a nice game for the vita or could be ridge racer and need for speed most wanted 2012.
Oooooo Ps 1 and 2 games you say! Whoopdee doo Who really cares about old friggin games! Um I dont know about anyone else but I bought a Ps4 to play Ps4 games, which by the way there doesnt seem to be any. I dont look at a ps3 game enhanced for the ps4 as a true ps4 game. But really sony, if you are going to have backwards compatible games then dont you think you should have ps3 games then? As if I want to see terrible graphics and blocky polygons in true hd. Absolutely ridiculous. Oh I know we are going to see cloud games, which is another stupid scam in my opinion. I have the game, and I own a physical copy, yet I have to pay to play the exact same thing on the cloud? You wasted all that money on gaikai or whatever the name is and all you had to do was make a ps3 emulator and update the systems with it. I'm tired of the rip off after rip off, scam after scam.. Now on top of my already paid ps+ membership I have to pay for skyrim online??? I thought the whole purpose of of ps+ was so you could play next gen online? Grrrrrr........ I have some shoes to sell sony, they come with free laces, but you have to pay extra if you want to leave the house.
Wow... so the witch in the video said that PS4 may get backwards compatibility. I'm psyched. Sorcery.
Can we please get some new games for PS4? Mine is just sitting there. I don't want to play stupid games from 15 years ago. Jerks
i love a chance to finished breath of fire 4 (haven't touched dragon quarters yet) and onimusha series
I am glad they do this, so people can still enjoy their older games they played on past gaming systems. What I don't like is that people have to pay for the same thing every time they get a new system (legacy cost). Even with Sony's "Playstation Now" cross-platform emulation it will be a service where you own nothing. At least with the PS3 you can play your copy of Final Fantasy 8 using the actual four discs you got in the case on your Birthday when you were a kid.
Sony needs to modernize and retexture the game to make it more compatible, and visually appealing to a greater market in order to survive. This means actually putting in actual design work, not just marketing. The FFX and Fable remakes are excellent examples of how developers can legitimately charge a premium for their product.
I already use my ps3 and psp to play the original spyro the dragon trilogy, rayman 1 & 2, and just the ps3 to play the original ape escape disc. The main thing I would look forward to with ps2 emulation on the ps4 would be the ability to play ape escape 2 & 3 again.
Pretty cool. This is the emulator is icing on the cake, since the PS4 is already putting out the better performing games.
I still have my fat 60GB PS3, so there's nothing from PS1 or PS2 I would play for the first time. My interest is in the rumors that the games will run at native 1080p and look far better than what current upscaling does. I'd gladly re-buy the original Resident Evil trilogy if the emulated version looked like an HD remake.
There's no reason PS4 shouldn't be able to locally emulate PS3 games as well. I think Sony is walking a delicate line where they want to offer a form of backward compatibility but not anger those whose physical copies of old games will never work in their PS4.
I hate when games have closed betas. Open ones allow devs to stress test their servers better, and gives a chance for people who don't know if they want to pay $60 to try the game.
to anyone who wants to know whether to play ESO or not i can safely tell you don't bother =/ wait for the next main elder scrolls installment it seriously feels like a much less fine tuned skyrim/oblivion with a overly boring story and clear signs of MMO integration, one of the best things about Elder Scrolls games is the exploration and adventure ESO completely limits this with slow grinding and your typical quests like in other MMO's only problem is fetch quests etc. have you running all over the map for what seems like forever all in all zenimax ruined my hopes for this to be an epic MMO with the finesse and polish like Skyrim/Oblivion clearly in this day and age people still cant be bothered to make MMO's properly also 14.99 a month who are they kidding!
Have people on here been living under a rock? TESO's was announced as monthly subs over three months ago! The only new info here is the lack of a PS+ requirement (which will actually hurt Sony in the long run given their current financial status and the fact it's the only thing they make any money on at the moment).
Interesting how the PS4 will now play older generation games but the PS3 won't (or at least it doesn't anymore since they 'patched' that feature out). Here's hoping they don't do the same for the PS4.
Open note to Respawn: I WILL dance like a monkey for a Beta invite. Seriously. Monkey dancing not your thing? Name your price...
Jess, good to see you. I snorted my coffee when you stated what your accent is. What's sad is that some folks still don't get it. :)
The PS4 should have the processing bandwidth for local emulation so that's excellent news for folks with PS1/2 games that they love. I have a bunch of ancient PC games that I go back and play once in a while and know how those folks feel.
If it can emulate PS2 games, the one game that I ABSOLUTELY must play again is Champions of Norrath. By far, my favorite game on my PS2.
Elder Scrolls Online! MONTHLY FEES!?!?!? WHY!! WELL THAT RUINED MY PS4 GAME PLANS!!
Now im having second thoughts if im gonna buy ESO!
Ok I decided I'm not getting The Elder Scrolls Online for my PS4, or at all for that matter. I was really excited, but now I'm not. First of all, I'm not paying monthly fees to play a game I bought for 60 bucks. Second, what difference does it make if you need a PS Plus membership or not, the Elder Scrolls is surly not the only game I want to play online. Third the subscription is more than the PS Plus membership by $130.00 a year. Fourth MMO's are getting old might as well drag out WoW. Fifth when you have brand new experiences coming to console like Destiny, The Division, and Watchdogs who's going to want to waste 15 dollars a month and countless hours playing another medieval subscription based MMO. I mean come on Bethesda I thought I loved you guys....
@climber207 Agreed! If the old game was great, it will remain great! On my 3DS I'm mostly playing Dawn of Sorrow or Chrono Trigger haha. All the same, I got much fun from New Leaf, Donkey Kong, & P:X ^_^
@scamarot I don't know if you really have a PlayStation 4 or not? Regardless, as someone who did grab his at launch. I got what I expected from a new console, and enjoy how it runs. Smoothly compared to the PlayStation 3, it's pretty cool.
If you want to complain to the world on your thoughts regarding next generation? Keep in mind no launch line-up has a decent range, and features where explained in detail way before release. Alittle research on your end on such a costly purchase was a no-brainer /or/ You could have waited /or/ just stuck with last generation as its gaming library is awesome.
Lastly on the compaint regarding graphic power. Keep in mind graphics does not equal a good game, not everyone is, how do you say "tech-head" craving ever greater resolution and shadow effects..
Many gamers like and want ports of the finest in gaming, for well, gameplay! If you are with PlayStation Network you would have noticed the download count on such games as Final Fantasy 7 and Symphony of the Night ;P
Looking forward to on PS4- The Evil Within, Shadow of the Beast, & multiple indie games.
@sleepnsurf Wow! your comment makes me feel silly getting all them trophies on a 25 year old PS4 remake 'Putty Squad' xD
Shadow Warrior is around the corner if that's any good news, which was considered pretty cool on the PC last year. The Evil Within & Thief also look to be good, personally I just want more shown on Shadow of the Beast game (gameplay would be nice)
Otherwise boot-up your last gen console and enjoy its library as you wait ;)
@ObxChillin The "alpha" was just to keep the buzz going for the game releasing in two months, a marketing tactic. This "beta" is to boost pre-orders before the launch, which is another marketing tactic. Sounds like EA, since they are the publisher of this game.
Smartest move is to wait and see how the game plays out before buying.
@youre_a_sheep You're incredibly wrong about the PS3 emulation. Trying to emulate a parallel processor using a serial processor would be an exercise in futility. No offense, but you have no idea what you're talking about. The PS3 would be ridiculously difficult to emulate. It may not even be possible. Instructions would be inherently different between the SoCs. The code doesn't even look remotely similar. You might be able to get some of the early games that just use the PPU, but most games in the last 5 years use the SPEs extensively due to the change in Sony's IDE. You're not going to get those to emulate happily.
@Maverick6585 i agree with more ppl on the sever they can see how well it can stand up to demands and with 4.2 million ps4`s sold if it was a open beta it would really put the severs to the test
@uchihasilver Was a lot of fun when I played it. Granted they don't have crafting implemented (or they didn't when I played the beta), but the combat was far better than any other MMO (though melee mobs need work when attacking ranged characters). I think your problem is that you're expecting a Skyrim experience in a MMO. It obviously won't happen. It also annoys me when someone considers themselves an Elder Scrolls expert and has only played Oblivion and Skyrim. Morrowind was the best game in the series in my opinion. By far. I'll be playing ESO. It's a very well done MMO. If you don't like it, then don't play it. You obviously don't like MMOs. So your opinion is pretty useless.
@uchihasilver I agree with this wholeheartedly. ESO is sadly a badly executed rehash of the standard MMO template, but with poor animations, boring powers and combat that doesn't "feel" good, and tired questlines that any MMO gamer of the past 20 years has seen a billion times before. There is literally nothing to recommend ESO.
Also ESO not requiring a PS+ account doesn't seem that sweet. I mean how big really is a demographic for PS4 owners who want to play games multiplayer (which an MMO is) that don't have PS+ for their other games already?
As well, if you already pay for PS+, then to play ESO you are just paying more because of the game's subscription fee.
So the only ones who benefit from this are the odd PS4 players who really wanted to play a massively multiplayer game but didn't either have any other games or didn't play any of them multiplayer before? I just don't see that being a meaningfully large market share personally.
@TwinStripeUK Yep, that's the news we were reporting. Reminding you guys of the subscription fee was just part of the context of the story.
@XCyberForceX Sony is working with GaiKai Cloud service to allow emulation of PS3 and possibl PS2 and PS1 titles to be streamed to the PS4 online.
@XCyberForceX No. Maybe stream through PS Now if you have the disc, but I wouldn't bet much on it.
@The_King-123 Yeah, right? It should be either purchase or monthly fee. Not both.
Do you have a problem understanding what you read? Ps1 and Ps2 games are blocky and polygonal, even if some of them are fun to play. And you know what.... I've already spent my 72 hours on ff7 and castlevania sotn. As a matter of fact they are downloaded on my ps3! Why would I want to take up space on my ps4.
So if you had a physical copy of a game, you could download it for a price to play it on your ps4 instead of popping in the disk. That is just a scam to make more money. Go ahead and fund it for them.
Also agree with the above. I would suggest anyone looking for a MMO at the moment to give Guild Wars 2 a whirl. No monhtly fee, beautiful, new content every two weeks...join the Fort Aspendwood Server and enjoy the ride :)
@scamarot @RSM-HQDude, PS3 backwards compatibility would require hardware changes - the PS4 is not powerful enough to emulate a PS3 smoothly. At least not smoothly enough that people wouldn't bitch.
Gaikai is an OPTIONAL service you can choose to pay for if you really must play a PS3 game on your PS4, or if you want to play an older PS1/PS2 game that you do not own. Nobody is making you pay for it.
On top of that, Sony is now offering us the ability to play PS1/PS2 games we DO already own for free.
So if there are any you missed, or sold off, you can now pay to experience them via Gaikai - which I would point out is the same as you needing to pay to play any game that you don't own. Games cost money. But, what's this, if we DO own it we can play it for free? Sweet!
I say well done on Sony's part. PS - most PS3 games will look sad on your PS4 anyway - once you've moved forward in tech the old stuff always looks "fuzzy" or "blocky" etc. Either you value playing the old game for its gameplay or you don't - you're not going to get a "next-gen" experience playing last gen titles.
