GS News - New 3DS Region-Locked; PewDiePie Disables Comments for Good
YouTube star PewDiePie has removed commenting from his videos, Xbox One heads to 28 more countries, and Nintendo maintains its region locking policy!
by Edmond Tran on
Region locked consoles are an archaic notion. There are enough import enthusiasts to justify being region-free, especially when you decide certain titles won't sell enough everywhere to merit international release.
I don't blame anyone who decides Youtube comments aren't worth reading, it's pretty much the bottom of the internet barrel.
News about some guy on Twitch? Really?!?! If you got no news, don't waste your time and ours. Invest your energy into something more productive. That would be the best for all of us.
I prefer that the PlayStation 3 is not region locked in regards to its video games. Nintendo is a great company, but I think they would benefit from some changes which would positively affect their consoles and the relationship between them and their userbase.
@BranKetra Region locking can never be a good thing.....it wasn't good 10 years back on dvd's...its not good now.....Nintendo seriously needs to start making decisions that make sense....
@idunno88 Quite true. Also, they still region lock DVDs and Blu-ray discs. I know it's supposed to help against piracy but does it really?? I still see many a bootleg out in stores here and there.
@scorpionz9 *heavy breathing*
Other Youtubers who DO allow comments were just handed an advantage. Also, comments are what generated the traffic and therefore some of the interest in any popular video. Has this guy forgotten that he isn't on TV?
@so_hai I genuinely pity anyone who goes to Youtube to read the comments. Half of what's there is personal attacks and hate speech, the other half is people saying "I enjoyed this", which a high number of views suggests anyway. There's really no upside.
It's really sad. Comments are already a problem that have been solved. Reddit figured out how to do it right a while ago.
One big issue with youtube comments, is the highest rated ones appear first, BUT youtube considers comments with alot of replies to be "highly rated". It basically conflates replies with "thumbs up" and "likes". It means trolls that bait out alot of flame replies get their comment to the top. It's confusing how they could have messed this up so bad, and it's literally a one-day fix they could do to stop it.
I don’t watch PewDiePie’s videos, but isn’t making a living off of all of the people that click on his videos on YouTube a little self-serving too? But it is his channel so he has the right to do whatever he wants to do with the comments section on it.
@SlyMC182 Yes you're partly right. It's like this guy thinks he's on a major TV network, not a free, open, non-curated video website.
@Kickable Me too
@Diablo-B @Kickable And now you know who he is, which is the exact reason he has done this, it's all a publicity stunt. I even saw an article about this on Yahoo and they very rarely report on gaming news, unless it is something they can twist to make it sound bad.
I bet if his number of followers suffers from this, his decision to turn off comments will quickly be reversed.
So to summarize ... a big youtuber disabled his comments, Nintendo showing how stubborn it still remains, typical of japanese ethnocentric companies, and M$ is unhappy with XBOX sales thus increasing its targeted market size by addressing more countries later this year.
Not surprised about any of this.
It kind of defeats the purpose of having a portable device when it is regionally locked. Can't buy games when you are overseas. The entire purpose and advantage of a portable device, is that it is portable. Good thinking Nintendo.
@roganth Nintendo just keeps saying "Mario, Zelda, Metroid" over and over, self assured that no one even wants anything else.
I don't blame PewDiePie at all. Internet people tend to be self-serving dicks who have little if any empathy for each-other. Proof enough in the comments.
I think that it is more then a little bias and unfair to say that most of the mean comments on the internet are made by people that live in the west.
@freedomzealot There you go, "thinking", again.
@freedomzealot Last I checked most of the genocide in world history has been carried out in the east, so let's not pretend being cruel and self-glorifying is an American phenomenon.
The consumer misses out on games not released in their countries.
I missed out on the 'Crash Time' sequels after 'Autobaun Poleizi'
Maybe Nintendo and others thinks it's best for them. Maybe it is.
Thank you Jess. I'm not region locked. I'm available in all countries.
@SaintsRowLA If there was any justice you'd be locked in a cell like every other stalking weirdo should be.
Too bad a sense of humor Danny.
Be thankful you don't have my mother for a mother for a mother. She would beat your rear end black and blue and take you some place far way hoping you would never make your way home for being so stupid--you and half the other males at this website.
@Dannystaples14 You're an I~D~I~O~T
1. i am from singapore and nintendo choice is pretty awful, GET RID OF REGION-LOCK.
2. never liked this guy, he too annoying, i think he try to prevent trolling and hatred.
3.Good job Microsoft
You'd think with Nintendo having such a bad year they'd get rid of region locking to get on fans' good sides.
Region locking is a d*** move.
PewDiePie: I don't care
Regio lock: I hate it, really. I am from Switzerland (EU) and there are regio locked systems (like the Ps2) with many great games that did not make it to the EU. So I had to buy a US Ps2, Import it, use a power exchanger and import all the games I wanted (like Suikoden 3).
Now while it isn't that bad with the 3DS (yet), who knows what rhe future brings. I would just like to have a chance to easely get the games I want to play. On my Ps4 as an example I have several games downloaded from different stores (US, JP, UK, HK). No need for an imported system for each regio with power exchanger, no need to import the games for high transport and boarder costs.
xOne: This won't create many new sales. Here in Switzerland many retailers offer a xOne imported from germany and I heard of many other people here from other countries that it is the same there. It's a shame since MS really needs to fill the gap. I don't want a lazy Sony
Sometimes I wish GS would disable comments. Websites don't need comments. Good for him, I don't watch his videos, but I couldn't agree more. Most online conversations turn to utter crap.
@Arther-la-Blunt You know how you hate the nasty comments but still wanted to post your own thoughts here? A lot of us are like that.
Always have to laugh when people make up excuses for disabling comments. It's nothing more than attempt to silence dissenting views and criticism. Whenever you see someone on youtube with comments disabled it's because the uploader has no idea how to defend their irredeemable actions/comments. Lots of people on youtube have unpopular views but keep comments on. That's because they have integrity. PewDiePie has no integrity.
@saturatedbutter He said it was mostly spam and trolls. I'd be pretty annoyed too if people kept using my videos to promote themselves and troll others for their own amusement. Yet, this is my opinion.
@crimsonhands95 That is such a lie. Spam is easy to deal with, there's filters and a report system. trоlls is just what they like to call anyone who is negative or disagrees with them. It's such an easy dismissive term to use.
@saturatedbutter If I had enough traffic to be a bit of a celebrity and saw my comment section was loaded with racist, sexist, homophobic and just plain vulgar comments, I'd be embarrassed to have those I know see it and wonder what kind of people I'm pandering to.
If you're a pathetic little creep who makes millions by talking rubbish while playing games, you should have to deal with a few sobering comments and a bit of spam. Hopefully this will kill his channel since the 12yo girls won't feel like they're interacting with him anymore. DieDiePewDiePie!!!
@XNEXUS666X Translation: You're one of the people he's describing.
Someone needs to call a Locksmith!
30 Million subscribers huh?
$100 or £60.76 says Putin already has an xbox1.
Microsoft plans on AIR dropping xbox1's into the middle of the South American jungle in order for the yet unknown tribes of Argentina, who having never seen plastic before, at which point will proclaim it's a gift from their pagan God and be placed next to their shrunken head collection. Oddly enough, I just urinated in what was supposed to be my snack, it was a bowl of frosted Cheerios and I mistakenly thought it was the toilet/supervisors head.
@n0xinab0x I think it's time to up your medication.
It's a frickin hand held portable device. That is, it should be designed for people who travel a lot (like me). I always though Nintendo games are cartoony heaps of dung. so no loss.
