GS News - GameStop says Digital Won’t Kill Physical, Destiny Beta Incoming!
GameStop talks digital distribution working with physical stores, new Destiny app arrives in time for Beta, and will the Xbox One succeed in Japan?

Physical and digital should be combined as well. I buy the digital version way before it's release to get whatever perks and then on release I get a physical copy mailed to me.
That way I can free up disc space if needed and I don't have to redownload the game again, because those are the only 2 things seperating me from digital gameheaven, discspace and downloadspeed.
"Sales doubled in May." Well, that's not very useful, as anything times zero is still zero. Not to say that MS sold zero consoles in May, but the fact that they're STILL not releasing actual sales figures doesn't say much for the platform.
I prefer physical copies because it feels more like I actually bought the game. I have something to put in my bookshelf. And I don't have to wait for a game to download.
Sorry for my poor English.
well digital is a total fail since PSN is down due to being slaughtered with people trying to use their codes for Destiny. Good idea waiting to give people to the last minute. Stupid people never learn.....
I prefer buying physical copies of games from Amazon. No dealing with the ludicrously slow service at Gamestop (five solid minutes for each person in line), no paying $60 for something digital I can't trade in when I'm done. Digital will not be viable until greed subsides and prices reflect the dramatically lower cost.
I definitely want the Uncharted Trilogy remastered. The Last Of Us and GTAV remasters are already pre-ordered. But the best game ever made is Skyrim and it played like crap on PS3. Bethesda owe us a Skyrim remaster so I can enjoy the game smooth as silk in full HD with lush environments. I would also love a Red Dead Redemption and Far Cry 3 remaster on PS4.
So PS and Xbox don't do well in Japan because there aren't enough games made by Japanese devs for the local market? So basically, not enough Dance Dance Revolution, Hello Kitty or cheap mobile game-themed releases? MS and Sony, you don't need Japan. They can keep Nintendo.
I like physical editions better cause one day if you get digital you won't be able to get the game anymore were as physical you can and its nice to hold what you own
The only way I'll go digital is if they make the games considerably cheaper than the hard copies
Hard copy of Destiny on Amazon: £45.00
Digital psn: £54.99 <-----this is a rip off, drop the price by at least £20 and we'll talk
Wow! I feel better now. Nice to be back. Officer McDonell, Capt. PeejayYeh reporting for blogging mayhem duty! =D
People who think physical media is dead are dead wrong, its here to stay for a long long time. Digital is what they want us to use, and theres a reason for that (many reasons actually), tbey can more easily control whatyu can and cant do ith the game, plain and simple. And trust me if we ever get to a digital only future it will make EA look like saints in comparision.
Is Sony actually working on something that could be huge in japan? All their first party titles seem to be made for western audiences. They should have really launched with a remake of Legend of Dragon in japan, this would have sold well ^^
The whole digital vs. physical thing is always hard to answer. I like to have something in my hands. But then again I also like to start my games without swapping discs. This is where Pc wins which combines both ^^
Games have gotten so big (Wolfenstein from Steam is 50gb) I'd rather buy the console games by disk. I read somewhere a cautionary tale of downloading PS4 games, how it may have to be restarted multiple times and take many hours to complete, rather avoid that.
Great Show. Thank you Jess.
Life is much better place with you here. Stay healthy and happy. I wish you all the best.
For me it's simply about price, for console games I almost always find physical cheaper than digital. Retailers run sales, pre-order promos, discounts that are store wide or not specific to the actual games themselves, they have clearances for stuff that's not doing well like with WiiU games several times :). Whatever the case, it almost always beats the digital price by a lot. Of course that makes perfect sense, because console digital is almost entirely closed, there's no competition.
Prefer box but will buy digital when it comes to the cheap.
Would never pay more than $10 or so for digital, over $10 or so I go box (other than season/dlc stuff)
Hi Jess! LOOOOOOOOONG Time guys!
I'm back! [Breathes HEAVILY] Wow! How long was that? Being on the IT industry is really making me a busy body =D True to the IT norm: "I AM AN IT DEVELOPER. I HAVE NO LIFE" [robot monotone].
Sorry, guys! Absent because of a system needs to be developed, so I had no life for at least 5 months, until now. =DDDDDD
Anyways, back to the news...
GameStop should stop talking about the future of physical copy stoppage. It will never happen. I, as a collector of physical copies, loves to get my hands on those very, very, very, very.... VERY precious DVDs boxes. I can be proud that I have original physical copies of Diablo I & II Bundle Pack, Age of Empires II Gold Edition, Civilization V Collector's Edition, Titan Quest Collector's Bundle, Baldur's Gate II Collector's Bundle, and the list goes on and on and on. I mean, seriously? As far as BluRay is concerned, physical copies will never fade away. I still burn my ISOs and ISZs. ;D
I am not against digital distribution, but as a multi-PC developer, and gamer, the capability to install and play without Internet connection anytime, anywhere should be my first option.
And as usual, console news is not interesting at all, in my perspective.
As always, Jess is looking very pretty dealing with the cold today. The shirt, which I really missed is the most, is great. =D
I hope I can get more days doing this. I love commenting in here. =D
@nesky Physically. I won't have to lug my systems around. Just need my game
@youre_a_sheep Absolutely right. I buy physical copies from Amazon as well. And I see no reason why I should jump on the digital-copy-train if the prices do not drop dramatically.
@Maj_Wood Won't be able to get the game any more. Unless there is a world wide cataclysmic appocalypse or something why would we suddenly lose access to the games? All you need is a server and someone willing to keep power flowing into it so we can download.
I'm pretty sure there would be someone willing to do it Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo?!, Valve? All possible companies currently who would love to let us pay them for some older game access.
@Fantasticus Wow. You're my hero. I wish I was just like you.
@prodigy_69 Nice example of "low-priced" digital games. =D
@waelse1 I've never downloaded a full game over PS3 or 360, but I got Gran Turismo 5 not that long ago, and it had a couple of gigs worth of updates and it took over 2 hours to download. Admittedly my internet is not the fastest but I shudder to think what 50gb would take.
The biggest problem is people say that internet speeds are getting faster so digital distribution is not going to be a problem in the future, but on the flip side games files are also getting bigger, so you end up back at square one. Waiting hours for it to download. Physical will always be the way I look to get any of my entertainment.
@cyberwookie72 HEY! No clones will replace the one and only Miss Jessica McDonell in my heart! =D
Peace, Jess ;-)
@ptown58 [two thumbs up!] =D
@hystavito I love the boxarts, and physical freebies. ;D
Calm yourself down young man. Some call 911--51/50
Damn computer field. . . someone's got do it. I'm just like you, unfortunately.
@PeejayYeh I don't particularly remember you :), but welcome back.
Ummm...no, but thanks for trying. All digital is a HORRIBLE idea. The games can disappear for no real reason and they're lost for good. Take the remake of turtles in time, I was going to buy it for my son but its gone, why because they lost the tmnt lisence and had to take the game down. A physical copy I could have located at any number of sites or stores.
@homelessgamer Good Gramming, isn't it? =DDDDD
@homelessgamer Hi mate! =D
