Nolan Bushnell calls Sony's tools "Lame"

PS4 has this by a land slide. Sony really impressed me with how they ditched the arrogant attitude and went for catering the core gamer.

Wait Sony Is Still in this WAR? um Whatever MICROSOFT WANTS IT GETS... period... WITH MONEY and a strong network or well paid employees tools and independents even via the developer kits for arcade now... I am surprised sony is even attempting a release of their system who plays on the ps3 anymore other the COD people really... the condole has been dead for years Microsoft owns alot of rights to alot of titles now and I have both consoles I havent turned my ps3 on in over two years.... I'd be willing to trade it to anyone for a xbox slim or gow 360... if you want a ps3 over a 360 just message me straight trade is fine... but I doubt anyone wants a ps3... Nintendo deserves an award for being almost crushed by Sony with SEGA and ATARI but knowing when its beat and capitalizing on what the WORLD CONQUERING MICROSOFT is focused on... they went with casual gamers and kids because honestly in the end not one company in this world will stop microsoft from having tv computers in every home one day... thats their goal to put a computer with windows in every home in the world if not more then one... by taking gaming from everyone else that is just one less aspect people can avoid them thru... so to them its not about the money... its simply about whos swinging the largest ONE... and its not the Japanese we all deep down know that much...
Is there really a winner? Xbox may have won in the U.S. and UK, but lost worldwide. Likewise, Sony didn't in the U.S. or UK, but won in Asia and Europe. I don't care who "wins" or "loses." If it requires an always-on internet connection its a loser to me.
Microsoft will win because of one thing......Xbox Live. It just has such an amazing hold over the competition with its Live service because it works very well, with an incredible installed user base....these people will go with what they know and trust....and no one wants to lose those achievement scores either....even if they don't really "mean" anything.
And to those people spouting off about the initial Xbox 360 hardware failures.....hey, I had 9, yes 9! original PlayStations break on me (5 in a row within 6 months) when they first released.
And also to these other kno*s calling Microsoft greedy...this is business you moronic snail turds. Unless Sony, Apple and other multi-billion dollar companies are simply in it for the goodness in their hearts and charity?
So, Xbox all the way I think. PlayStation missed the crucial boat with this generation and has allowed Microsoft to amass an absolutely humongous online community that won't simply disappear when the PS4 is released.
Sorry guys but it's true!
Nothing to see here...
Use the money M$ paid you say this bullshit to do that brain surgery you desperately need, Nolan.
Who cares what one of the biggest failures thinks? He pioneered something that everyone else did way better, and was ruined because of it. If his intellect held any sway after the mid-80's, maybe this would be relevant. At this point, we may as well have some Wild West snake-oil salesman telling us which medication is best for what. Besides, the riot across the internet seems to favor a console that works when the network messes up...
After this HD era im goin to go with my old school ways. Im on my 3rd xbox 360. 5 years xbox live subscriptions. For the next era i will purchase like my parents did in the past. They bought a tv that lasted forever, a cooker that lasts forever a car that lasts forever. For me the capitalism way of America and Microsoft lost its interest, look at my story and see if their not good enough reasons to go back to my Sony of my childhood. I have completed all prestiges on call of duty online and i still feel empty, why is goin to be different when we can all see with our own eyes internet gaming on consoles being rulled by Switch lag and Boosters. I have pre-ordered another slap to the Capitalists. SONY PS4 is replacing the Xbox "RING OF GREED".
Remember this is the guy who didn't want to buy 1/3 of Apple for $50000.
He also didn't think Steve Jobs could handle being a CEO.
That should tell you something about his predictions of the future.
Stupid old fart. Atari know absolutely NOTHING about winning a console war, the last time they were close to being top of the class was the home computer battle between Amiga and Atari ST, some 25 YEARS AGO.
He makes a very good point about software and how it's important to make it easy to develop for your platform. But didn't the PS3 already prove that alone is not enough to cause your competition to "dominate"?
The PS3 hardware was very different and new, and everyone always talked about how difficult it was to develop for. That matters, but if you can put enough of the things into people's homes, then it's worth the trouble. "Oh boy, what a pain"... but the PS4 has an install base of [whatever] so we'll make [whatever] amount of money there.
Even if he is totally correct and the PS4's development support/tools are "lame", it won't matter as long as Sony can convince enough people to buy it. No matter how accurate his premise is, I don't see it leading to his overall conclusion. There are just too many other factors to consider, and too much past evidence to the contrary.
But of course, there's no way that the xbox won't win with it's amazing always-online, no used games and less exclusive games feature
"Man will never reach the moon regardless of all future scientific advances."
-- Dr. Lee DeForest, "Father of Radio & Grandfather of Television."
"The bomb will never go off. I speak as an expert in explosives."
- - Admiral William Leahy , US Atomic Bomb Project
"There is no likelihood man can ever tap the power of the atom."
-- Robert Millikan, Nobel Prize in Physics, 1923
"Computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons."
-- Popular Mechanics, forecasting the relentless march of science, 1949
"PS4 is lame, it will fail."
-- Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari
Yeah... "LOL" What does somebody who's been analyzing the gaming industry since 1972 know about the industry?
and Atari was so good at making hardware sing and dance. Just look how good their business is doing.
@neilcottee You are aware that most people don't care about their achievement score? Maybe most core gamers but the simple reality is that casual gamers dominate the market. Just look at what sells best.
Also hasn't Sony passed MS in units sold? If MS has an always online console they'll end up losing.
@DCeric Because they already have outdated hardware
Would you have bought Apple back in the 90s? Everyone thought they were dead and gone. Steve Jobs turned that around because he was a charismatic genius and yet since he has gone that magic feeling of Apple seems to have died with him. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't worth $50000 again in a decade or so.
@ryogapower And that war was lost :P
@hystavito agreed. plus how would he know what tools sony are putting out there? its not like he'd be in any position to develop with them in any case. Sony has learned from the overly complex hardware of the ps3 and made great strides to give developers a platform thats simpler to develop for, so i dont see how anything this guy says holds any water.
@kik4444 Dead serious: I've always used Xbox and Xbox 360, however, forcing me to be connected to the internet to play and not allow me to play if my internet goes down (where I live, that happens often...I live on the frozen tundra of Skyrim...er...Wyoming) will absolutely change that.
"Always online is the future. Deal with it!'
@SEGA_NYC Well. He thought the Wii was the best console of last generation.
Because he didn't like controllers with a lot of buttons and thought it was amazing how you could move your arm around instead.
@SEGA_NYC Yeah he totally knows everything he is a god.
Always online, no used games more exclusives games, and better tools will make the Xbox a winner, just like this generation.
Ooooh wait ditch the more exclusives that belongs to Sony and winner of this generation would be Nintendo if the Wii could be labeled as this generation. They are more like one generation behind. So it goes to Sony again. Wait how could Sony win, they did start a year behind were and still are a much more expensive and have that horrible tools, not to mention the console is pain in the a.s to program, which everybody knows.
Oh well its probably something wrong with the people. They totally dont understand that PS3 is, after the analyzation, the worse console, they should have buyed Xbox instead. So the next generation will people undestand that what is better and they will buy Xbox more, you will see. The analysation can't be wrong. Or can?
@WCK619 That Jaguar just hasn't found its market yet. I'm sure it will be a winner soon.
I didn't realize MY future predictions were in question. I don't claim to know who will win the console wars and I do not know if I'd have bought Apple stock. I can only speculate what I'd have done in his situation and with his wallet.
The fact is that he was closely acquainted with Steve Jobs, however so he should have been able to judge his persona better than I.
This is a guy who thinks the wiimote is a better controller than the xbox pad or the dual shock 3. He's out of touch with the industry imo.
If you want my future predictions then I'm still waiting for the illuminating wallpaper that can change patterns. I predicted that in the beginning of the 80's and I still believe it is coming.
As for the console wars they all look pretty bad & similar in my eyes. It will depend mostly on how they will treat their customers and what game exclusives they can deliver.
So far the PS4 looks better but that can change very quickly. There is simply not enough information on either of them at this point. What sells best is not necessarily what I think is the best either.
That's like saying a Fiat is better than a Porche.
One thing is clear though. This guy is not good at predicting stuff or he'd still be relevant.
There will always be points in each generation which grabs more attention from customers but the difference in sales will be marginal at best, neither with ever "dominate" the market.
Both have been around long enough to know how the process ticks now and both will play the field like pros. All I care about is that great titles come out of it all.
If I could bottle your arrogance I could power Japan for a year. Your disrespect for one of the most preeminent founders of gaming is disgusting.
He claims to be able to predict the future.
I checked his track record and found he's bad at it.
You jumped in and defended his ability to predict the future based on the assumption that everyone is equally bad at it.
You didn't have a valid point because we shouldn't trust an average person's predictions of the future. Especially not if they've been wrong about predicting major things in the past.
Now you say you don't trust his predictions so I wonder why you bothered to defend him in the first place.
"You can't base an argument for anything in the future on anything from the past accurately, if you do you will be shocked sooner or later."
I can actually. With a very high probability of success. It's basic deduction. If X happens and Y happens then you can be fairly certain Z will happen.
This is how kids learn to move in a way that doesn't hurt them.
@Saketume When did I say anything about your judgement of the future? I was talking about Apple and Steve Jobs' success (in the past). All I said was NO ONE wanted Apple in the 90s because they were all but dead. This guy not wanting it made him one of the majority.
No one can know what is going to happen in the future, including this guy or anyone else, trying to do so is like playing the National Lotteries and we all know that is a lost cause as well. The fact he has made some bad predictions in the past doesn't make him any more or capable of predicting anything now, but that is the same for every person.
Everyone banging on about the new Xbox before it is even announced let alone released, are pathetic. Xbox may turn up with something so awesome it blows everyone's mind. They may turn up yet and say we aren't competitive with Sony so we are dropping out of the race for this generation. Unlikely but you get the point.
You can't base an argument for anything in the future on anything from the past accurately, if you do you will be shocked sooner or later. It is why scientists actually do experiments rather than just assume it is a certain way. If they did they would almost always be wrong.
The fact he is on here probably means he wanted some publicity. I still won't listen to him, the same way if Ken Lavine or some other industry giants came on here spouting this shit as well I wouldn't believe them. Not until the consoles are actually in hands so proper well balanced opinions can be made will I care about these things and at which point this guy will have melted back into the woodwork and I still won't care about him or his untimely opinions.
Where did i disrespected him? I only iterpreted your words. He cant be wrong, that means he is a god. That you said, because As a god he cant be wrong, as a man he can be wrong. People do and always will make mistakes, thats just a human nature.
