@Rayrota It's an insult to the Ridge Racer name :( Watching this video made me hate the controls; the guy is crashing like every second. They're trying to turn it into a NFSUnderground/Burnoutish game. Why change a game that was perfect the way it was, you know?
@JustPlainLucas I don't even think the series was dead since it's usually just been a launch game to showcase the powerhouse features of each console, but if this is where the series is going, it might be. Bugbear, we already have a Burnout game that does exactly what it needs to. Don't tarnish the name of Ridge Racer and westernize an amazing drift racer where smashing things is not the priority and skill and timing is the main focus, ok? -_-
Frag? What is this, Quake? Seriously though, why not call it something else? Slapping the Ridge Racer name on it is just shameless.
The more I watch of this game, the less excited I am for it. There isn't a single bit of Ridge Racer in this game. It's all Burnout and Split/Second. You didn't revive the series, Bugbear; you crammed it in a coffin and buried it six feet under.
I love how everyone bashes on a game long before they even play it these days, get over yourselves, no one owes you anything.
It's not if Ridge Racer is this heavy hitting name brand that will sell just cause of the name. I don't understand why they decided on calling this ridge racer? It doesn't even resemble my favorite racing franchise at all. And I know change is something needed to keep things fresh, but there's a difference between change, and copying whats already been done, ex: Burnout, split second, NFS. even flatout.
WOW. i'd rather go back to playing past ridge racer games then play this pile of junk. not buying. sorry.
@BH14: Well, I'm not sure how dated the graphics could be considered, what I'm saying is that the video might make it look worse, sometimes you watch a Youtube video at full 1080p and it doesn't look like a real 1080p on a tv made for it, see what I'm getting at, when you actually play it (if you do) it might look a bit better (I said might, and I didn't say by how much?), I see your point about the 'Hollywood' sign position text, it could annoy someone, that, and I too think Hollywood is very pompous to have a big sign on a hill ("hey, martians, we're here!"). I actually rather like it when you drive through a lorry in a game, of course in real life it should not be encouraged, but I think sometimes being in a virtual world such as a video game, you shuld have a far fetched form of freedom. Oh, Razor Rain, Ridge Racer has fallen from the top, I know, It needs more new ideas. good ones, you know? Anyway, they should ask you for ideas, in the hope someone could revive you old friend Ridge Racer.
I'm not sure what to feel sorry for: The guy playing this awful wretched game or the terrible game itself?
First thing I have to say is that the graphics look dated. It looks like a mixture between Burnout and Split Second but both of those games are better. The large position text was a bad idea. They should have just kept it simple with small text. You don't need a Hollywood Sign showing your position every time you pass someone. And I don't understand why it is a good thing to drive your car through stone pillars and an 18 wheeler gas truck. And your car goes through it like the truck is like a ghost. Some minor fender bender is getting slow motion scenes. I think this will be a flop like Need for Speed: The Run was. Split Second was good but the last great racing game was Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
This F' ing sucks, this is not Ridge Racer, this is a 'oh i want to copy what other games have done' this looks terrible.
looks EXACTLY like Split/Second, but with worse graphics even though i knew this would not be a true Ridge Racer, i was a big fan of the Flatout games so i was hoping this would still be a good game (just not a Ridge Racer) but i guess not......
Farewell old friend... You introduced me to the joys of high speed, power drifting craziness, and I grew to love you for all that you were. I stayed faithful to you as you aged, even when they said your time was done... Sadly, it is now time to put you to rest, as the monster that lies before me bares no resemblance to you anymore. I will not allow my memory to be stained with the image of what they've done to you... While your passing is now a mercy, I will always remember you as you were in your prime... Rest in piece good buddy. Ridge Racer: 1994 - 2011
oh. my. seriously. this is not RR at all! I mean, I do welcome changes but not this drastic (and disastrous). this game looks very dull and doesn't seem to have any 'soul' at all. for a while I hoped this is just an alpha version, but with 3 months to release date I'm a pessimist.
I felt the same way as I did during the teaser, which is why did they do this to Ridge Racer? Oh, because it's being developed in the US. They got rid of all of the futuristic, Japanese flair of RR and basically made something in no way similar, added Ridge Racer drifting physics and called it Ridge Racer. How about I made a game where you ride a golf cart through an enchanted forrest, add Takedowns, and call it Burnout: Deciduous? You can't (well, I guess you can do whatever when you own the rights) just make whatever, add one iconic element from the previous games and call it part of the same franchise. I want to go back to racing through island resorts and such!
is this a downloadable? the graphics look terrible against most new racers. why would you play this vs. a burnout paradise for instance?
Wot a bad game, should of stuck with the original. Wots all that about driving into parked trucks? Can't see any fun in it, trying to make it loud and eyecatching with explosions. If this game didn't have the Ridge Racer title i guess this would not sell. Burnout Rules!
Looks absolute garbage, looks like a cheaply made second rate Split Second. Lots of boring long flat straights, dull generic looking city, ugly texture pop in. Ill be sticking with RR7 to get my Ridge Racer kicks this gen. The Ridge Racer franchise hasnt been the same since the PS1. Just give us what we really want, a HD version of the Ridge Racer 2 arcade machine with online play.
It does look like Bugbear just created another Flatout game - then stuck a Ridge Racer label on it :-) the truck part looked quite fun though. Namco - give us HD versions of RR4 or Rage Racer for download, where's the love for the RR veterans!
Wow, they turned Ridge Racer into Split/Second 2. Nice job! Bring back R4 style game-play. These cars look like they handle way too floaty. RR always had super sharp handling.
@tzd88 It's called GranTourismo and it isn't selling nearly as well as it used to. Plus, it's easier to make a cartoon world with any law of physics that is convenient. I thought the break from scripted courses in Burnout Paradise was great, but it did have it's share of cheesiness as well.
can someone just make a NORMAL racing game without the drifting, blurring, nitro, slow-mo, targeting, destruction, frag-attacks, and "hey dood that's rad!" type of commentary? What happened to good old-fashioned racing? Relying on driving skills and car performance only.
this is the wrong direction, this has put me off the franchise i used to love ridge racer but his is more like burnout with drifting they need to get back to the basics and back to the roots of ridge racer , i'm so disappointed
love the fact that Namco is taking this to a new direction but it's not Ridge Racer anymore. It feels like Need for Speed
