Gamescom 2011: Star Wars: the Old Republic Interview
Maxwell McGee's midichlorians run high in GameSpot's video interview for Star Wars: The Old Republic at Gamescom 2011.
so torn about this game. I loved SWG and i so want TOR but time just doesn't permit. I hate the thought of starting this game some 2 years in to it's life span and I can't see work or family relenting anytime soon. I might just have to let it slip and try pick it up in a year or two. Some times it would be good to be a bum lol.
Not putting this game down because its probably going to be great for those that play it but for me, Guild Wars 2 really blows this out of the water. I like the animations better, the gameplay of combat looks way more fun. Too bad Guild Wars didnt have a star wars theme. As far as story.... well we all already know what happens in star wars. You get light sabers, force powers, and Pod racers. Ive seen all of these things before. As for how dynamic each person's story is... well.. I'd have to play it to find out. But Guild Wars 2 seems to be more my style. Not saying SWTOR is going to be bad or anything, because it most likely wont be.
Maxwell McGee is a funny man who always starts off with Meat and Potatoes . And by funny man i mean a f a-g
lol people neg my comment and yet probably haven't even seen anything for guild wars 2. Star wars got lame after the phantom menace, or after the second kotor game, one of the two.
WoW in space! That first raid encounter was Onyxia apparently. The more I see of this game the less interested I become.
@ namgis i was gonna do the same being a huge fan of kotor..but i recently signed up for WoW just to get a better handle on what mmo gameplay is really like..and i gotta say im more excited than ever..WoW is a great mmo..and if bioware slapps that basic foundation on a starwars game set in the old republic and integrates their single player story components they are so well known for we are in for a game that may very well shatter the mold...but i would def suggest checkn out another mmo so that you can get the most outa the old republic :)
Hate it when they give you know details. Your not a politician they can ask you anything they want not just prearranged questions. Anyway this game is going to be amazing!
Bioware has never failed me. Mass Effect was very basic gameplay grahics and sound compared to Mass Effect 2 but the story was awesome. They will deliver on the story side for sure. Im not really sure what people want from game play beyond the basic combat, advancement, story, and adaptation. It does have to be a game that plays on computers readilly available out there. Not all of us have a computer that costs more than our car so it can't look like the movies. I have seen some definite improvement over time in the graphics since the first news. Maybe people would like it to look as awesome as MassEffect 3 seems to look. Is that even possible for an MMO targeting for system variability across the entire planet earth? I don't think so. They are banking on story. If you don't think BioWare can deliver on story than you are seriously misinformed.
Getting this just for the SP. Will have to see about the mmo aspect, never played. -Also, can we get a full length movie from the crew that made their trailers!!
Gotta be honest...I'm not impressed with the little pew pew weapons and everyone else running around with a light saber. Not enough flashy stuff going on to give it an epic feel or show that people are all really differently powerful with impressive skills and feats to show off but which are still clearly useful. Without the flash and differentiation it seems like it would get someone dull and humdrum too quickly.
I've never enjoyed an mmo, but man this game looks so good. I wish bioware had never made DA 2 to let doubt slip into my mind...but i guess DA2 had a year and half in development and this has had like 6 years of bioware love.
Gamespot hires the most mush-mouthed people as on-air "talent," it drives me absolutely crazy. I wish they had a tiny little font so I could accurately type out the way each sentence starts out at a normal volume and gets softer towards the end until the last word is inaudible. He sounds like this: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/penelope-traffic-school/227154/
Its just laughable how a lot of comments are bashing the game out of assumptions and wrong info that they think they know. It was a flashpoint at a CON that people weren't completing. That is quite fair since everybody were just tossed in the flashpoint/instance. For the reference its not more instanced that other mmo's like LOTRO and WoW and there is open world pvp since pvp lakes were confirmed along with ordinary world pvp.
They showed just the TINIEST bit of footage of Eternity Vault's final boss in little snippets throughout the video, and it looked incredibly epic.
I see people criticizing this guy on his response to how endgame content becomes more replayable, and how they make their raids different from others... Let me ask you this... Do you know of any MMO that described, in detail, the endgame raids? I followed a lot of MMOs over the past few years, and none of them ever showed this much. TOR staff showed you the very first "boss battle" in this raid. That right there should be enough. I personally dont want them to describe anything about the raids. Let them set it up, and when i get into it, ill find out.
Its strange cause they're all Jedi/Sith but they're standing still most of the time. I don't remember Obi-Wan standing in the same spot for 2 hours.
Yeah - this is just what the gaming industry needed. . . . Another crap MMO, and they managed to destroy the Old Republic name at the same time. Great job Biware. . . . I'll pass.
Looks like World of Star Wars. I think I'd rather stick with the only MMO worth playing, Guild Wars 2.
"what is your team doing to make end game content a little more variable to other mmo's end game content" shifting through his convoluded answer dodging, the short answer is "nothing"
All end game mmo have high wipe rates until you figure out how to beat the bosses. Hell if you could just walk in a raid or operations and beat it on the first time through they might as well give us loot for doing nothing
I won't be able to resist buying this game, but judging from everything I've seen about endgame I doubt I'll stick around. 90% wipe rate no thanks.
I just wondering if we can play through flash points more then one time. How will are choices impact are story? Is it only on the first play through that our choices matter or can we play through over and over until the group picks the choices that we want?
Amazon UK as put a release date not sure what to make of it, 31 of December, probably just an estimate.
I'd love to hear more on actual details of launch date, monthly pricing. All this hush hush is really getting tiring.
As excited as I am to try this game. This interview was terrible. Little to no new information was given, and his answers as to what sets this game apart from other MMO's were really weak. From reading articles and past interviews I could come up with half a dozen reasons myself. Yet he comes across like he knows very little about the games content. One thing I'm also concerned with: He said 90% of the people trying the DEMO failed at completing the raid. Of course they did, you don't teach someone to swim by throwing them in the deep end. If he thinks that is any indication of how difficult their content is I worry that Bioware is drastically underestimating how fast MMO players plow through content.
I love Star Wars, but I'm slightly skeptical. I'm sure the game will do well, at least initially, but it concerns me that it seems built on what's becoming a rather outdated foundation of MMOs, ie the fetch quest/raid based experiences that have dominated the past of this genre. When I line it up against something like a Guild Wars 2, where they seem focused on trying to evolve and revitalize the grind-fests that many online gamers have come to associate with games like WoW, I wonder if SW:TOR will do enough to maintain interest beyond the initial "I'm swinging my lightsaber" stage.
when is this coming out !! sigh... i want it so bad and all i want now is a release date. looks great though.
Still cannot make my mind up about this, probably wait for a while after release before giving it a crack.
