Hey I will write a little warning for everyone thinking about picking this game up:
First of all for all of you who did not play FFVIII, it should be obvious but the Graphics in this Video are NOT INGAME! They are (beautifully) prerendered cutscenes that appear in the game. As you can see there is a bot around the Video. And it probably is just there so that it's less obvious that they did not scale up the Videos. So all the cutscenes will be in (not 100% sure but it should be since videos on GS are 720p) 640 * 480 and then upscaled to your monitor resolution! (if not shown in a box like in the video).
Now what did they do to enhance the graphics and the game itself?
- They upscaled all(not even sure if all or just characters and some other stuff) 3D models from the game. They did not remake the background. That gets obvious when you see the screenshots on Steam. The characters stick out more than in the original game. So it gets more obvious that they are just "put on top" of the 2D background.
- not anything else as far as I know. They might have included more resulutions (which are mostly availible via fan patches in the original game). But these obviously don't enhance graphics but just upscale the game so it fit's to your screen (from what I can see in the steam screenshots, still displaying the game in a letterbox because they did not made the game widescreen capable, and if they did it stretches the game!)
"New" features (according to steam):
- A "magic booster" that you can access from the launcher, that gives you 100 of most (excluding the strongest) spells in the game - so to call it by it's real name a cheat trainer!
- You can access "Chocobo world" (a minigame which came with the original FF VIII) from the game menu.
What do they charge you for this 14 year old game? 12$ in the US, 13€ (=18$!!!) in Germany and 10Pound (=15$) in the UK. All of these Prices are a rippoff, especially in germany (and probably most of europe)!
The so called "enhancements" they did should only take a workday for a fairly capable person. And most compability issues for the new windows plattforms were already fixed by community patches! I don't know if they even used any of these but even programming that should not be a big issue!
I think that alone is an insult to all the fans wanting to play this amazing game!
So what could they possibly do to piss of more fans? Did someone say online requirement?
YES they did not even have the shame and included online verification. So you have to log in with a square Enix account or Facebook to play the game! Online!
Pleasy do everyone a favor and don't support this rippoff! Show the developers that us gamers are no Idiots and don't support them ripping off long time fans of a great series. If that is what Square became I will never buy a game from them again!
Regards to all the Fans, I'm gonna play the original on 4 CD's with community patches!
My very first FF and still has a special place in my heart. Think I spent double the time playing Triple Triad, collecting the cards and resetting rules (especially resetting rules!!) than playing the main storyline XD
This is just such a great game. Might pick this up, old PS1 discs aren't in good shape anymore. Though Bravely Default coming tomorrow, a real FF successor by the looks of it :)
They couldn't even enhance the CG to a proper 1080p? LAME. Great game except the last boss always seemed tacked on to me.
I would love a full hd remake of this this game it has so much to offer.I remeber playing it more than a 100 hours maybe even a 150.A true great Final Fantasy that makes you cringe at FF13 trilogy.
@Th4R Thanks. The verification alone keeps me away. I bought FF7 on Steam when it came out and hated that.
Oh on a sidenote, I did find out that they "redid" the music, meaning all music is midi files now. Fans are not pleased as it is supposed to sound worse than the original and are asking for the original psx music. Square fixed that issue in FFVII and probably will in FFVIII but I am asking myself now. Why did they "redo" the music which afterwards sounds worse then before and then switch it back to the original files? And even after the negative feedback on FFVII they still did not change it in this version? Seems like they have a person working on this once a year for an hour or so.
@Blackened_Halo we haven't decided on that yet so that's a big maybe and very unlikely.
@super_tramp_tri Agree about last boss. I felt that way about 9 as well (the one after the trance form Kuja fight)
