Feedbackula - LucasArts Funereal Fury!

Retweaks? Going away for one or two weeks to try something new? Are you secretly telling us that Feedbackula is gone the way of Start/Select?

But I don't think the demise of LucasArts or any game studio is particularly sad, and rather I see it as the byproduct of a monumental shift in the paradigm of the gaming indus-- Hey, wait, that was the end of the marketing speak! I promise! While, yes, there is a human element to the market shift, and I do feel sympathy for those without jobs due to the shift... Lucasarts has become a crap studio. I mean that in that all potential to make an interesting Star Wars game, like KOTOR2 or Tie Fighter, which took established details of the universe and turned them on their head-- something I recently heard Christopher Waltz as the essence of true drama. The Star Wars IP, which is pretty much the only thing Lucasarts had going for it, has become so restricted and guarded against any violation against the canon of the truth faith that it became completely uninteresting. Those games like Grim Fandango and Monkey Island were the ideas of people, who have moved on to start their own businesses quite a long time ago and continued to make the games we like to play. In fact, the demise of LucasArts might mean those beloved IPs might go up for sale to their "rightful" owners, rather than stay in the basement of a sad excuse for a developer.

In short, I'm a big fan of creation through destruction, and while that sucks in human terms in the short term, I think we can see all of the talent trapped at LucasArts freed up to either start their own companies or work at less crappy companies. We don't owe developers a living, even if they make one or two or six titles we really love. Especially not, if the talent who made those titles come to life (noting that game developing is not the work of one or two well published personalities) have long since departed for greener pastures.

I gotta say this is like a dream come true for me. I wish other more important issues in my life would have come so nicely out. But I'm happy to see G. Lucas' greedy hands off Star Wars, and to see Lucas Arts stopped from making another mediocre game.

Yes it's sad, but I remember all the golden games from the haydays and there hasn't really been much beyond Star Wars for the last 10 years. Good as that is - LOVE SW... watched it opening night back in '77..... they basically beat that dead horse beyond death. I remember the Tim Schafer days with GREAT adventures..... to me the cancellation of the 2nd Full Throttle game was the beginning of the end for LucasArts. Soo many good games... but so long ago. At least I had the joy of playing them when they were fresh. That said, I wish Full Throttle and Grim Fandango would show on Steam or GOG.

what we seem to forget that it HAS made good games. the guys that made the games are long gone but the nostaligia is strong in this one
and as such, they were never going to make another grim fandango, now it has a better chance of coming out(which is kinda sad)

I'm torn over this. On one hand, it's a taste of their own medicine after how they treated Free Radical and contributed to putting them out of business.

On the other hand, the people that will really be affected (artists and programmers) will have had nothing to do with LucasArts' toxic managers, who will simply find some other executive job and help to force-choke another company. Hopefully TellTale is looking to expand, as that's where a number of former LucasArts employees are now anyway.

now why would they need to do this? guessing it's just a total reboot of the star wars franchise and we can hope it all turns out for the better.

star wars has lost all it was worth over the last years. ever since i saw dumbass robots acting like a retarded 4 year old (episode 1) i've been waiting for something like this.

It sucks that people lost their jobs. The last game that was fun from LucasArts was The Force Unleashed. I am still hoping that we will see great Star Wars games again from some company. I would love to see somebody finally complete Star Wars: BF3, but I do not think it will happen. I hope Star Wars 1313 gets resurrected. I heard Obsidian was thinking about making a Kotor 3.

LucasArts went down hill years ago Empire at War was the last great one to me., It needed to be put down but I still really like to see Star Wars 1313 saved.

In my view, LucasArts began to decline in 1999, when The Phantom Menace was released. From there on out, EVERY LucasArts release was associated with the prequels and, because they were created as little more than prequel marketing tools with expensive price tags, their quality was highly suspect, playability limited. The last great release by LucasArts was Knights of the Old Republic, but the fiasco associated with Knights of the Old Republic II, in my view, sealed LucasArts' fate.

If anything, we owe Disney - they put LucasArts out of their misery.
