E3 2014: Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth Stage Demo

I just hope it's not Pathetically easy like Civ 5.  Which had the worst AI I've seen in a strategy game for quite some time.  The highest difficulty became hard only because you were so completely handicapped vs the AI.  It didn't play any better.  I hate lazy AI programming that when you up the difficulty it just handicaps you artificially making the game more difficult.

Damn, I knew it. I am ageing faster than everyone else. I could have sworn I was playing this more than a decade ago. Must be in ostrich years. Alpha Centauri was easily the best Civ game, lets hope they make its sequel as well.

My favourite part of Alpha Centauri was playing as Santiago, making sure my military was the most up to date in the game world and getting voted Planet leader by threating those that didn't vote for me.

Excited when it was first announced, even more excited now.  Alpha Centauri still holds up after all these years, I'm still playing Civ V, and this looks like it's merging the best of both.  So much love for Firaxis right now.

I can't wait for this game. I recently played Alpha Centurai and while the game itself was fantastic, it felt outdated for obvious reasons. I hope this new one carries on the torch as many fans have been hoping for.

Still one unit per tile? Civ V was great (my steam hours will attest to that) but the one unit per tile rule was the root of all problems the game had. Not too happy that they didn't learn from that design mistake.


Not listening to their core community... no surprise there.

It seems all recycled, but i won't mind if they finally develop full AI difficulty WITHOUT handicaps of any type. Hate Handicaps, they need to invest on this as Blizz did with SC2, but a lot easier here. That can be a real new feature almost as equal as doubling the entire content of civ V.

Stoked on this game, but it seems like just a re-skinned Civ V. Not seeing a lot of innovations.

The tech tree looks very 'Endless Space'.

Not saying that's a bad thing, just a similarity.

@HuSSaR83 i PRAY it wil man, the feel of the game was a huge part of Alpha Centauri, the technology discovery videos, the quotes, the story and interaction between factions, and the endgame humor.... it was all just WAY too human, that's what made it epic.

@spikepigeo It is most strategy without stack units. That is a unrealistic feature.

@spikepigeo Oh god no.. i hope i never have to wait while the computer attacks my city with 480 swordsmen again.


There is only two problems with one unit per tile. One that the AI isn't to good with it, the other is that i can never go back and play those old civs again.

@spikepigeo You've got to be the only person I've heard say that one unit per tile is a bad idea.  Some people who played the older Civs a load and didn't know how to adapt without massive stacks are the only people who took issue with the design change... everyone else is in favour of it,  the stacks were awful.

@spikepigeo Really? I've mostly heard support for the no unit stacking in Civ V as it actually causes some need for movement planning rather than the moving doomstacks of Civ IV.

@Dilandau88 They're just showing the start though. He said somewhere else that it will start out very similar but diverge more later.


It will obviously be similar to Civ 5, but hopefully it will be just different enough as well. The main differences i've picked up so far is that the civs should be a lot more customizable (for example by not having everyone following the same tech tree), there will be constant interaction with the alien lifeforms through the game and you have an added orbital layer they claim is integral to the strategy.

@virtualskill @vladric  What!? There's literally 1000's of PC exclusives. Think of all those great indie games for example on steam. Plus all the cross-platform games run/look better on PC.

@virtualskill @vladric Hahahaha. No. Not even close. PC gamers miss out on an exclusive here and there. Console gamers miss out on entire genres (99% of MMOs, all worthwhile MOBAs, strategy games, etc). Not to mention the improved performance, visuals, mods, and all the other stuff that has been mentioned millions of times elsewhere.
