As long as the gameplay is of good quality in "Dragon's Crown," then I'll be happy playing it. Scrolling action, plus RPG elements and awesome 2D visuals: a nice combo!
to bad it 's not out yet in germany... And when it does im gone be busy with GTA 5 ... well there loss
Been playing this one for a while now and I´m amazed with the impact that character design has in the discussion, since the game itself is really great.I found it curious to see that,in a globalized world, most of the people who find time to comment on the subject are precisely those who find it offensive.I´m from Brazil, a country (we have a majority of catholic upbringing,me included) most people would automatically associate with the beach scenery full of beautiful (micro)bikini girls so I can´t really say the depiction of women in the game shocked me or even got me worried about how female gamers would react (don´t like it ,don´t play it).Every media tends to sexualize its contents as a way to sell more, nothing new to that.I´m glad I was not raised to feel bad about admiring womanly anatomy, even in cartoonish way.
hrmm ... boobs are "disgusting" ? really?
and ... chopping people up with axes, oh that's fine, yep, chop up people and get blood and guts everywhere, but, heck ... don't show the public a breast, don't shock the public like that!
with all the action and crap taking place on the screen you don't really even notice any of the the stuff people are complaining about. your too busy trying to survive.
Every single NPC has an animation and idle position that gives life to it, most of the stuff in the hand-drawn scenarios and environments offer great color that fits each particular place. Music fits perfectly and light/darkness equilibrium is used as a tool to create a rich environment that gives life to the entire setting.
BUT people ignores all this and calls it "drawn by a teenager" because of some boobs and one ass whiting all that amazing artwork. Now who is the teenager here?
I knew he would mention the boobs in a negative way. Games have had extreme violence and language for years, but show large breasts and it's considered juvenile.
What's kind of sad is I preordered the game and took a risk on it. I love the gameplay and I feel this reviewers problems with the game are all valid.
Still I almost feel dirty for playing a game that displays such a large amount huge sexuality on females. I mean people would be screaming to the moon if we put men in these kind of poses and outfits but do it to women and we just shut up and start supporting it?
Speaking from personal experience I'm getting very tired of chain-mail bikinis and women wearing nothing at all. It's getting to the point of being an unwelcome distraction in a good game.
You know what game got this right? Mass effect. I found Liara attractive as hell because she was such a strong yet compassionate woman. Another example would be Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite and how good natured but naive and strong willed she is. It feels so easy to fall in love with those characters for who they are rather then how they are dressed. It's a long long way from how a game like Dragon's crown presents women as almost pure sexual objects.
I couldn't help but chuckle when he was talking about the portrayal of females in the game - "It doesn't ruin Dragon's Crown, but it does leave a stain.". Those stains can be hard to wash out can't they ;)
Yea $50 seems pretty steep for this. It looks dope and I wanna get it but $50 I think is maybe too much. How long is the campaign?
This game's overt sexuality is going to get it greater press attention and forum coverage, which translates into greater sales. This happened with the Tomb Raider series, and it's happening again with Dragon's Crown. Ironic how all the sensitive people decrying the game's sexuality end up promoting its sales.
WTF! this games costs 50U$!? I thought it would be an average PSstore game! like 15 buck$.. 20 tops.. I would even pay 25 IF the game were at least LONGER! DAMW! so bummed! guess I'll have to go with duck tales instead while I wait for the ninja turtles...
This does look like a fun game, but they could have toned things down just a bit. the Amazon looks like a mutant ass with a torso growing out of it.
People are way too uptight about sexuality in games. People are way too uptight about sexuality in general. Such hyper-stylized sexuality in Dragon's Crown is an attractive quality to me. It's beautiful artwork and its sex done right.
@meeghoulz I find it odd that people are so bent out of shape about stuff like this, and "over-sexualization" of characters such as Quiet in the new MGS game, yet how long has Snake been wearing ridiculously tight spandex? I don't get offended by things like that, and I think the main reason people are getting offended by such things is that it's highly imbalanced. The same thing was happening in film for the longest time. Naked women everywhere, yet now we're seeing this trend emerging, with movies such as Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I think the same thing will happen with video games eventually.
@Morfessa The point isn't that it's there the point is that given how the art feels so alive and well thought out in the rest of the game it's more distracting and off putting then anything else. It would be like putting a pair of naked boobs on the Mona Lisa. That's not what makes that painting special.
@twyz Because violence and language usually fit the context of what is going on, girls posing in ways that accentuate their breasts and wearing skimpy impractical outfits usually doesn't. There are times when it does work, a recent example being lollipop chainsaw which is campy hack and slash that doesn't take itself seriously. It doesn't work in a game like Nier that takes itself really seriously but has a character that fights wearing lingerie.
@Karjah Dude, the first NPC you encounter in the game is Roland the barbarian which is completely naked aside from his speedo, really? feeling offended by pixels? The games amazing and if you cant stare at the screen cause of drawn women showing cleavages theres something wrong between your ears.
@Dark_Metamorphosis depends on how you play the game, its supposed to be 15-20hrs long but me and my friend have put 10h right now and we just unlocked Rune magics which is supposed to be something you unlock 3hrs in, we actually take our time exploring the town, interacting with NPCs and doing every side quests.
@Dark_Metamorphosis As long as you dont believe generic streamlined interactive movie trash like Crap of Us and Bioshit infinite that I could barely call games are worth their 60$ price tag.
@Dark_Metamorphosis The tag is what got me, as well. It was $39 on PSN when I checked.
There is being sensitive and there is making rational arguments.
I take it you never seen a ghetto booty before.
@Swaghard to me its just done in very very poor taste. Kind of like they did it so they could sell more copies. Im not sensitive at all to sexuality, I have a crazy night life. But to have a character walk around in a g string and bending over, or a super huge big boobied girl who has around 300 jiggles per minute is just disgusting really.
@Swaghard I agree. Not just for the artistically beautiful Dragon's Crown, but for any form of entertainment media in general. If it's done right. People just need to grow up.
@StarsiderSajun @meeghoulz Wanna bet that the same people criticizing it(´´over-sexualization´´) will be playing these games anyway (watching these movies...)?Or anyone really think MGS V will not be a great game just because KOJIMA oji-san made it clear he expects the designer to focus on the fun aspect of games as well? Everybody loves COSPLAY !How about starting a request in facebook to BELLECHERE to make the sorcerer in DRAGON´S CROWN and JESSICA NIGRI to make MGS V´s´´QUIET``?
@Karjah @Morfessa Something to note is that there's a time and place for everything. People are in an uproar about the new MGS character wearing... let's be honest, not much, and she's a sniper so....
Painting of naked woman = good
Painting of Mona Lisa with boobs hanging out = bad
And there's really not an easy fix for this kind of stuff if you are striving for balance, like I mentioned in another comment. You can't very well have a male character with his junk hanging out all over the place and then call it fair. =(
Edit: After having actually watched the video... yeah it's kind of icky. It's not the fact that the characters are over-sexualized, it's the manner in which it's done that's kind of icky...
@SubHumanTorch @twyz i agree with the fact that it is out of context to show boobs and stuff but it doesn't really deteriorate the game in any way , if someone gets offended and wouldn't like to play because of it they are missing out , i mean its not like everyone loves every character design but that shouldn't ruin a game yknow , i see what you mean though :) lollipop chainsaw was sheit imo lol
@G4m3r0uTL4wZ @Karjah I do notice how this game kind of goes both ways, at least with the knight being impossibly jacked. But even then, steroids are a thing, and so are implants, as well as naturally growing back problems, so I don't see the problem here. In a way, all of this is realistic, even if only slightly so. I agree, chainmail bikinis are very impractical in a real situation, but we have magic, dragons, and monsters. What's so real about what's going on here?
@G4m3r0uTL4wZ Ok I feel you on Last of Us but Bioshock Infinite was greatly worth it, though I didn't pay $60 for it. If you were a fan of the original that is.
@grove12345 You clearly don't know anything about Japanese culture
@panda0nX @SubHumanTorch @twyz I didn't mean to imply it ruins a game I really like Nier and even the character in question, it just lowers her credibility when she is wearing lacy underwear to do battle. I agree Lollipop Chainsaw is a terrible game but the overly sexualised (if that's even a word) female characters go with overall tone of the game.
@DisturbedFan789 @G4m3r0uTL4wZ @Karjah I never said anything about realism here at all your creating a straw man.
The important thing and the thing both myself and the reviewer were addressing is the consistency and context of the imagery in relation to the rest of the game. This is a gorgeous game we have here and when your fighting through zombies and giant dragons walking into a room with a "spirit" on the bed whom you can poke her naughty bits to make her moan feels more then a little out of place and distracting.
@Karjah No idea where the different thing came from. I've just never been a fan of naughty dogs stuff and what I've seen from the Last of Us doesn't look that special to me. Just a matter of opinion. If you're talking about consoles I have most of the consoles besides WiiU.
I can't play this with my kids around. And if my wife sees the boob-jiggle that comes with spell use, she'll be thinking there's something wrong with me.
For realistic vs. sensitive, try this one on:
How would you feel if every time a warrior guy swings his sword, his half gallon sized scrotum wiggled back and forth? Every time. I personally, would not enjoy watching extra-large-scrotum-wiggle, and would wish it was not part of the game.
Boob-giggle, (Dead of Alive) may sell games, but when things look unreal, and distract, I'd give that part of the game a negative.
Funny, though, the BOOBS are featured in the frame of the review thumbnail. That will increase clicks, Gamespot! Initially, I thought -- wow, somebody went crazy with the character creation tools. But no, it seems that you get that set of proportions automatically.
Amazon.com reviews were good, but I'll have to pass on this game.
