Denis Dyack: We're Not Trying to Sell 20 Million Copies
In part two of our interview with Denis Dyack, he talks about the importance of staying small even when you have big ambitions.
this guy is incompetent and full of shit,his work speaks for itself(eternal darkness is good but overrated)and btw we want TOO HUMAN 2 PLZ :-P....off all people for interview you pick this guy ??? Uwe Boll would have been better choice
I wish every developer would think like this, or publisher in that matter and tried to make great games instead. Great games will sell.
I don't care about all the bullshit everyone is spewing in the comments section. Eternal Darkness was one of my favorite games from the Gamecube era, and this interview convinced me he still knows what he is doing from a design pov (something that is shockingly rare in the gaming industry).
For those that don't even know what Eternal Darkness is....
this looks like its geared more to a mature pc audience thank god, console trolls will not appreciate this type of game!
Talking about Horror, Routine alpha gameplay trailer captured my imagination (like "the ring"), must play with the oculus rift. There is some thing here, in this interview.
I remember seeing Alien and Aliens in theaters, Aliens (2) was exiting until you saw the aliens on screen, the exiting bit was not seeing them and only hearing the bleeps was scary enough.
Denis Dyack: We're Trying to Sell 20 Million Copies
Dyack needs a new job.. not making games his mouth has tarnished any work he has done in the past...
This guy think he is gods gift to gamers.... when he is fake, lots of skeletons in the closet.. No way I would support anything he makes... now... not after all the BS he spews...
Not trying to sell 20 million copies? Okay, well 30 million then arrogant a-hole : ) Keep up the good work.
Not sure why people are saying it might suck, You know that the original Eternal Darkness mostly reviewed with 9.0 - 9.6 review scores? it was pretty amazingly recieved. I hate when great games only get released on 1 platform. Any games that have over 9.0 scores or are awesome should instantly have to be put on all platforms!!!! Unless certain platforms cant actually handle the game because of hardware restraints.
Just listening to this interview convince me to donate at KickStarter because it is nice to see that another few of game developers trying to make a difference in the gaming industry by actually trying new Ips just to show that stick to the same Ip will get rusted
The only reason he's saying these things because A: He lost his big team after the countless screwups, and B: He'll never get close to selling 20 million copies of anything. All his games combined didn't even reach that goal.
Don't let the wise sweettalking fool you, he's a bad apple
You want a secuel of a FLOP?
Well, good luck to you, cause THAT guy IS going to make Shadow of Eternals. 8-\
@Djwolfram Did you know how to make a game?... Maybe no. So how in the world a gamer can hate a project that is going to be good for us? WTF...
@PinchySkree If it weren't for "Corporate greed" there would be no gaming.
@PinchySkree I dont know not ALL games have been sht lol. Fallout 3 was great. But yeah, some of them have been atrociously awful. But then you get that in every era. Mass Effect trilogy, has got to be one of the most ambitious projects around and that was pretty awesome. Not so much from a gameplay perspective but a sci fi Universe story telling perpective, it was epic.
But yeah, the handholding, the arrows pointing the player to objectives all the way through the experiences in almost every AAA game now, The QTE events. The fall of Unique AAA experimental projects are harder and harder to come by. But I generally rely on midrange developers not AAA companys now. But then you've got games like FIFA 13 and NBA2K12 that ARE way better than they were back in 2005.
But Medal Of Honor, COD, Ghost recon, Splinter Cell(the new one looks like it might be ok) Resident Evil, list goes on and on, that have turned to QTE 3rd person, pieces of sht Gears Of War wannabes.
Thank god ARMA 3 exists and I can just make my OWN game lol.
@PinchySkree completely agreed with ya my fav game was released in 2005
@PinchySkree sounds about right
@snaketus I think that developers are not "allowed" to think like this and that is the problem.
The main focus should be to make money in order to put you in a position to create better games but the majority of these publishers is so cought up in making more money so instead of taking risks they rather urge developers to rehash what worked in the first place.
I don´t blame them though, I blame us for sleeping on developers that got balls to brake from the norm like Mr. Dyack and co here.
@ElDuderino1 That game gave me nightmares at the time, this newer one should be impressive, especially if they use the same style of narration. And please bring back their spell system.
@arkadiyk Eternal darkness was a gamecube only game. But I agree ALL games should be ported to PC. Then I don't have to ever look at a console again.
At least all games that require a controller should be cross platformed. So I can play FIFA with people on console. But I doubt that will ever happen.
@arkadiyk Trolls LOL
@zenogandia hes not the only one. Only 1 game sells that many on console and that's COD. The others sell about 3-8 million on average.
Riiiight and your such a good apple yourself.
@Urizen316 lol, theres only 1 game on the planet unless you play MMORPG's or Dota on PC or play FTP games, that sells 20 million copies and that's COD. NO other game sells 20 million copies. So don't worry, hes not the only one that doesn't sell 20 million copies. BF3 didn't sell 20 million copies, not even close. Not even BF3 and RAGE and The LAst Of Us together sold 20 million copies. Maybe just over, but not by much.
What makes a person a failure is giving up. Learn from your mistakes and move on. Too Human wasn't a terrible game. It was short, but not terrible.
@Urizen316 and you have proof? Lets see it bitching, whining, moaning loud mouth. I dare you. If not, get lost. LOL
@Urizen316 You poor little guy. You're trying your best, I know.
Wow aren't you the nice guy in the bunch.
@Urizen316 and you were never in the game, douchebag waterboy. Now, go fetch me a bottle of H2O B4 I put my boot up your arse. LOL. Damn, that was way too easy.
@Urizen316 Yeah, why not hate Tom McShea, he's way easier to hate for way more legitimate reasons.
@Urizen316 Why the hate?
@dr_jashugan i don't want seqeuel to FLOP,was being sarcastic
@ocidax i don't hate the project,just don't like the guy,look at his work at Too Human and X-men Destiny...
@nyran125tk I know, that's what makes DD's comments so stupid. It's the only goal he's gonna make: not make 20 million copies. It's the wrong mindset aswell. You WANT 20 million people to play your game because you're proud of it and as many people as possible should experience it.
Or several ex employees of his failed company claiming he's an incompetent, self-involved, borderline sociopath?
Or how about the claims that he misappropriated money given to him by Activision to make X-Men Destiny to work in secret on Eternal Darkness 2....a game which he didn't own the rights for. Work that eventually got converted into the original teaser footage for Shadow of the Eternals.
That kind of proof?
If you payed any attention in the past, you would know these things.
Seriously, if you don't have any relevant knowledge, leave.
Oh, and LOL at your comments being removed haha seems I'm not the only who sees nothing but garbage coming from you haha
Why would you hate him, he didn't do anything to you, he didn't murder your dad, or rape your sister,
he simply made a bad games, nobody force you to buy their products either, he's just a Creator, he had his up and down, even Kojima made a bad games (Zone of the Enders)
Get a life, mate.
@Noname1190 It's just the thing to do on the net apparently.
They were essentially stealing money from Activision to fund a game that had no publisher and DIDN'T HAVE THE RIGHTS TO MAKE. He also pulled most of development staff off of X-Men Destiny to work on Eternal Darkness 2 in secret. Half of the people within the company didn't even know ED2 was being worked on.
Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt on that, It's still only 1 of about half a dozen points against him that I brought up.
Don't worry keech and Urizen316, both your comments are spot on, there's just a ton of butthurt Ninfants in this thread that still swear by Eternal Darkness. In reality, ED was only famous for its Sanity gimmick, and that's exactly what it is, a gimmick. Dyack and company need to find another profession.
@Urizen316 No, it simply means I`m too provocative. You`ll be looking it up on a dictionary.LOL
@Urizen316 *paid. "payed" isn't a word.
@Urizen316 You are disgusting.
@Ladiesman17 @Urizen316 it was good back in the day atleast, heard the hd version wasnt all that great. I think more people remember Dennis Dyack for his arrogance and bad games than there are people who dislike Zone of te Enders.. But still, your opinion, it's your right
err. no. I play HD version, and it sucks.
@Ladiesman17 @Urizen316 I don't hate him, never said that. I don't like his arrogant attitude and false promises. He wants you to believe whatever game he makes is perfect, he'll never admit they're flawed, he blames it on somebody else. He doesn't hone up to his mistakes even though it comes at the cost of his employees.
And I have bought a few of his games, and they were very flawed. He had 1 up, and that was Eternal Darkness. And why name Zone of the Enders? That was a good game..
@LatinproX Do you even speak latin?
@McGuirex3 @Urizen316 that was directed spefically at urine316. LOL not at Mcguirex3. Sorry I forgot to delete your tag.
"Before it was released he had the arrogance to claim it was so good"
He did/does the very same thing, that countless other (PR)-Dev's./Pub. do before and or after their game comes out! And will continue to do so from now on! That is (whether we like it, or even believe it) the way game and the like are sold. I.e. PRing the crap out of it! And what I find so funny is that all too often so many of us buy into it, more so than not lol! Happy gaming all!!
