Dark Souls II GFX Mod - Downsampled 4K Visual Overhaul
From the creator of DSFix, Durante's GeDoSaTo mod turns Dark Souls II into the visually-striking experience it should have always been.

I agree with the closing comment. They should have given Durante a job right after he did DSFIx, after all he fixed the game better than the game developers themselves.
@gamer2190 So true.
I made an account just to say that you are right.
My main problem with this game is that its just too easy, dark souls 1 was popular due to the challenge, why they removed this I just dont know.
the problem with dark souls 2 is that it is just a port from old consoles such as ps3/360 to modern PCs.
The day From Software release a dark souls for PC only, then, and only then, graphics will look really amazing.
Dark souls 1 and 2 for PC are the best versions you can get because you can actually tweak a bit the graphics.. playing at 60 fps and stuff. But the overall look of the game is still pretty outdated.
Anyhow, the game is awesome. But it could do with a little graphic improvement. Especially with the textures.
@eze_sl89"the problem with dark souls 2 is that it is just a port from old consoles such as ps3/360 to modern PCs."
Wrong. They had a much more visually impressive build earlier in development. The engine was built and developed for next gen. The problem with Dark Souls 2 on PC is that once they saw that the engine was crippling the older hardware, they didn't allocate the necessary resources to continue developing a better version of the game. This may seem very similar to what you said, but it's not a port.
@eze_sl89Why cant you just take the game for how it is supposed to look, Minecraft for example, if all most PC gamers are bothered about is high graphics and fps then I feel bad for you guys.
I am happy with what Dark Souls 2 looks like out of the box in the Pc version when set to High Max.
I have tried several versions of GeDoSaTo, and while the job behind this plugin is solid, it is still a Alpha version, and I rather avoid alpha mods.
Also I didn't like the post processing too much. Sure it adds that darkness and color vibrant, but post processing - is what it sounds like - an extra effect added to the game. I felt like it doesn't add that much, and might even take away from what the developers initially intended.
Downsampling is not recommended, unless have extremely powerful system. I have a solid gaming rig, but downsampling took a bunch of fps - to drop me below the solid 60. However if you downsample from QHD res - you can expect an improvement without a big performance drop.
Also keep in mind that you will need to do some manual readme tweaking. Again Durante has made a great job as always, but I would love to see his mod in a more graphical setup and a mod installation.
I ended up tweaking and enhancing my games visuals by using Nvidia inspector and Control Panel - this was also recommended by Durante before his alpha mod was released:
I have added Ambient Occlusion - quality, forced Anisotropic Filtering to x16, overwrote x8CSAA, added x2 super sampling aa.
My GPU 670gtx seems to run at maximum clock speeds, which is a bit of a bummer because of heat, but the game look better, and still run on pretty 60 fps.
What do you think? anyone else using Inspector to tweak the game's appearance?
Since the next Souls game, Project Beast, is a PS4 exclusive, hopefully the PC modders can truly extend Dark Souls II for five or six years.
@eternal_napalm If Project Beast is even true, It's a direct sequel while the last two soul games were spiritual successors. That's a huge difference.
It doesn't mean From Software won't make more Souls games as they're probably not involved with Project Beast in the first place (nor do they have to be).
For example, Perfect Dark was technically a spiritual successor to Golden Eye. It's a respectable way of a style of game having a "sequel" without infringing on the original IP that brought it inspiration--and the original devs that made the original game but can no longer directly associate a new game to the original they made.
Sony bought the Souls IP from From Software long ago. It hasn't stopped them making Dark Souls 1 or 2 thankfully; what makes you think they'll no longer be 'Souls' game from them.
While they were recently bought, I don't expect them to not make more 'Souls' games unless they have a friendship so strong with the team that'll be behind Project Beast that they stop making that style of game.
The company that bought them doesn't have a track record of making a Souls game with their name attached to it, raising some concern as well.
Honestly, Dark Souls II doesn't need this. It's still the second best game of this console generation (after the first game), regardless of the graphics, which are still excellent. People who criticise a game for having bad graphics in 2014 should be forced to play Atari 2600 games for the rest of their lives.
the guy in the video says "although he didnt release a ds2 fix".. because ds2 doesnt need to be fixed.. ds1 was locked at 720p 30fps while DS2 was not. So ds2 didn't need "fixing" so to speak
This game met my expectations, I expected... a crappy port that had a clunky remapping keys which restricted you to keys you would NEVER use, and after you spend 20mins trying to find suitable keys you search for that save & exit only to find every logical key resets the POS and exits. Then there is the 'online play', which from what I see is a trolls delight... I was not on 1min when I had some idiot dancing around me, heckling me with thrusts and jumping around me... yeah, like I want to play a game like that, so I went into options to shut down trolls, no obvious way to do this, so... I wasted 50 bucks for now.
Why sell me a PC game that can only be enjoyed with a controller? Why release a game after the previous PC effort was ripped by critics for this exact flaw?!
To me this 'game' is the nail in the PC coffin, when a reputable company craps something like this for the PC and passes it off as a honest effort, the platform is dead. RIP
@Zilched It's ok to admit you suck at a game. Perhaps Freddie The Fish is more your level of skill?
Well if this was your expectation then you shouldn't have been disappointed and shouldn't be complaining now should you? Since what you wrote is retarded/false I'm guessing you suck at the game and need to complain to everyone with a set of eyes and ears about Dark Souls II. It sounds like you just don't have the testicular fortitude for a game like this. You wrote "had a clunky remapping keys" this made my brain hurt at just how retarded that sounds. Learn to properly articulate your words before writing to other people if you expect to be taken seriously. I'm guessing you don't care about being taken seriously since you write false things about games just to get attention.
The keyboard remapping works perfectly fine. Third person action games are better with a controller anyway. There is nothing to be gained in a game like this from using a mouse and keyboard. This isn't a FPS so the accuracy of the mouse doesn't help you at all. This is only their 4th PC game and it is just as good and has the same features as any good PC game minus the console buttons showing up when using M&K. Which can easily be fixed by FROM or modders. How come it's always some butthurt, whining, crybaby calling this a bad port? It's not a port. It was developed along side the console versions. If it was a port it would be one of the console versions translated and recompiled to run on PC. If it was a port it would have slowdown in the same spots as the console version because it wouldn't have PC specific optimizations like the first one.
Leave it up to a crybaby to complain about one of the main features of the game. It sounds like this is just not the game for you. You're just a little too wimpy for Dark Souls. Go play Parappa the Rapper or something because you clearly can't handle a real game. Man, it only took you 1 minute to get invaded? That's amazing seeing as you can't get invaded in Things Betwixt and Majula. You must have skipped all cutscenes and ran through the tutorial and Majula. No wonder you're butthurt not only do you not know anything about the story but you also don't know how to play. It sounds like you missed the Estus Flask and can't level up either if you went that fast. You're also complaining about someone dancing around you? Dancing? Last I checked you can't do that in this game. With the exception of one rare item, which when someone uses that it's a joke. But I'm guessing the person didn't have it and you're just being stupid. Wait until you get invaded by someone that actually fights you. You must be butthurt and taking yourself too seriously if you are complaining about someone dancing around you.
@lewishim666 @Zilched I'm guessing you specialize in insults and trying to troll gamers that post an honest opinion, I'm also guessing you are a fanboy of this game who feels the need to insult or belittle anyone who disagrees with your opinion, so let's really entertain the folks and see you let loose with more Jr High rants and insults, maybe this time I'll crack a smile, maybe not.
No actually I don't specialize in insults but sometimes people cry so load it makes it easy on me to insult them. You weren't giving your opinion you were blatently talking crap about the game. Saying "This game met my expectations, I expected..." and then going on to insult the game and call it a PoS is not an opinion. That was you attacking the game so that's what I did too you. What people do online in a game has nothing to do with the quality of the game itself even though you acted like FROM was somehow responsible for how that one invader acted. An invader heckling you in a game does not make it a bad game. Even though that's how you acted. That's just stupid and that's how I treated you.
Complaining about the game being better with a controller and not being able to turn invasions off is you obviously trolling so I treated you like one. What exactly do you expect posting things like that on a Dark Souls II video? There really is no reason for you to do what you did unless you were wanting a reaction out of people that obviously like the game. If you don't like the game why are you even here? To be a troll and get reactions out of people. This clearly is not a game for people like you lacking in testicular fortitude. If you can't even take someone heckling you in a game I wonder how you handle real life. I'm guessing you don't. You probably stay inside and talk crap from your computer desk all day.
All of your posts read liek this to me "mommy mommy! they're making fun of me! My vagina hurts! what do I do?" I don't care what the hell your point was. I have no problem with someone disagreeing with me but when you are belittling a game simply because you don't understand that you just show how ignorant you are. You want to talk about people not knowing when to be quiet and yet you are the one trolling the comments of a videogame you apparently don't like. you should have been quiet from the beginning. There is no reason for you to post here if you don't like the game. No one cares if you don't like the game. Especially on this video which people obviously do like the game. You were trying to get a reaction out of people. You did now crawl back to your parents basement.
@Zilched Your argument/whining was justified until you went overboard and said this "To me this 'game' is the nail in the PC coffin, when a reputable company
craps something like this for the PC and passes it off as a honest
effort, the platform is dead. RIP" PC gaming is alive and kicking and increasing in popularity more than ever..
@Zilched why not stop being stubborn and just use a controller. it is obviously a lot easier to control anyway with a gamepad. the game requires fast reflexes and therefore having the gamepad is more advantageous since the buttons are all right next to each other and not spread around a keyboard. you are missing out on an amazing game because you are stubborn, congrats.
@Zilched Just buy an xbox controller!!!. A wired one just plugs in and plays, no need for drivers. Wireless ones work too if you get the reciver with it. Problem solved and you can enjoy many more games "the way they were meant to be played" such as FIFA, NFS, Street fighter etc.. .
@Zilched the paltform is far from dead... its a game from a company that just cant do PC ports very well.. just accept that and move on there are many many other amazing games on the PC platform.
I dont like the mosue and keyboard suport in this and I hate playing this type of game with a controller.. I was lucky and managed to pick this up very cheap anyway so its not the end of the world but fighting with the controls and the a fact its a hard game anyway puts me of from playing it more.
Yep. I agree. Next time PC begs via petition, especially for a game like Dark Souls, which is console in its foundation and core, companies need to laugh and tell them to go pound sand
@Zilched The only thing dead is your brain cells lol. Man what a horrible opinion. I bet you wake up every morning just pissed at the world.
Thanks. The game looks great with this.
@paulascarney I totally will, because this sounds completely legit and in no way sounds like a scam. I was hoping to get rich quick on the interwebs with no education whatsoever. Sign me up!
It certainly improves the vanilla DS 2, but from what I saw from the advertised trailer, the lighting and texture used seemed to be much better.
Warmer, richer tones, with lighting on armor and realistic overhauls on the overall presentations. I don't know lighting works, but I will always wonder if PC dark souls 2 is originally meant to be that way, and merely got shafted by consoles.
It could be that the consoles held it back but seeing as the original footage was on PC I don't think that's the case. They might not have been able to get the streaming working correctly to load all of these effects quickly enough in other parts of the game for it to not have pop in or long load times. Maybe they couldn't optimize them well enough on PC to get them to run good on PC since they are inexperienced on PC. They could have just over developed this area to make it look good when they show it to the public and didn't have enough time to develop the rest of the game to this extent so they took the extra effects out of these area to keep the game looking visually consistent.
With all of the talented modders on PC, these people should be hired by companies. I'm looking at you, Bethesda Games Studio
@ferna1234 Ouch. It's ok, if it eases your mind, I lost 120,000 Souls in my second playthrough on console in a tough area later on. I got cocky, thought I could get to the next bonfire fine since I knew the area. Planned on going to Majula when I got there. Got humble pie and rage (more like depressed) quit for the night :P
@eternal_napalm why not just use the ring of life protection. you don't lose your souls or humanity, and can repair for 3000 souls when it breaks. easy. I just make sure I always earn at least 3000 souls before I die, that way I never lose anything.
Like I said, I was too cocky :P. It was interesting they made rings repairable...I have two for normal death and two for death and Petrification
Hidetaka Miyazaki, From Software and Sony Japan are very hotly rumored to be making a new game called Project Beast. Very early screens have surfaced, too, depicting a fog door Soulish artwork. PlayStation 4 exclusive :). Go to Google, type in Project Beast, and take your pick of dozens of sources. Hopefully we PS4 Souls fans will learn more soon!
Modding is awesome, but as it becomes more popular I'm afraid developers will get lazy because of it. Soon we'll have to help create the games we buy.
@yngsten For some reason I can see this happening. We're already paying for games to be made from conception with crowd sourcing.
modding is the main reason i love pc gaming. i still mostly play my games on consoles, but when ever i get a chance to upgrade or buy a new pc i dive into it for a while.
@donjuancorleone Check the Dark Souls 2 Nexus site, there's a mod called WickfutENB. The game becomes amazing with improved lightning and cool cinematic effects.
It may not be the most advanced graphically, but I think the world looks beautiful maxed out on PC. Have you seen shrine of Amana? Or the kings bridge? Looks great.
