i am intrigued by this game. i am new to MMO's in general but, this one seems really unique. i also really like the freedom they give you when creating a character. they really want the player to be creative while using strategy.

i will say though, the guy who is narrating the video sounds like a creeper.

was not very impressed by the beta weekend , game is ok.

This games does it for me for sure. Loved every mind-baffling second of the beta, and can´t wait to see more of The Secret World.

Played it, was ok, will see what more Beta weekends have to offer. I am neither impressed or turned off as of yet.

I gave the beta a fair amount of time and while the quest and story approach shows a great deal of promise. The combat in general had a lot of short comings in my opinion. I did like the skill wheel concept. The ability to change builds in mid stream to virtually anything you want is currently unique in MMO's (at least the ones I've seen and I've tried a lot). Some MMO's offer dual specing or some other type of multiple spec/soul options but these are all class locked. What TSW offers here is a real advancement IMO.

Overall I am currently on the fence with this MMO. I have read all the talk about "this is still beta", "they are using place holders", "non disclosure clauses", 'they are holding back content on purpose" blah, blah, blah. Is it just me or or is June the 16th getting awefully close for a beta to be this unpolished? The GW2 beta totally blew me away, they have no non-disclosure requirements any more and they haven't even published a estimated release date yet.

I may just give this game a try until GW2 comes out just because I am in such a desperate need for a decent MMO game fix (It is a real waste land out there) and this game does show a fair amount of promise. Hopefully there will be another more polished beta weekend prior to launch so I can get a better feeling about the final product.

What a childish script.. " It hits with awesome power!! " I mean seriously? I thought this game was 18+

@Domaldel As far i see you're close to Funcom or with them. I must say i'm 18 and i'm working in that sector while learning Game/Level/Environment design and i can really looking objective to that game. I can say some important things. Firstly graphics are very good for a MMO. But needs optimization tweaks. Game stutters with everything maxed out. Though i'm using all latest drivers (Runs fine on high with AA-Filtering-MBlur off) with core2quad83002.55 ghz cpu and GTX460 with DDR3 1033 mhz 4GB Kingston (One slot). Secondly i liked sound acting and sound system (I've tried with 5.1 system and it's satisfying.) Thirdly lip animations isn't first priority for a MMO but if we're downloading a 24 GB game in 2012, it needs to be good. I'm not saying best. But for now %90 of lip animations are like programmer made. Character move and combat animations are really dull. I know some of them placeholder but Funcom's main problem is animations. I was tried Age Of Conan but deleted it after 2 hours because of animations. They was super-fail. Also about TSW %80 of Particles are not satisfying. Some buttons doesn't works. GUI needs some work. Some subtitles was missing. Also i'm unable to close chat window (Maybe it was my fault). And GUI is really complicated. Objective markers needs under - above types. For example i was talked with Customer Service for Agartha entry. Because of that marker. But place is under my position. It's annoying for a user. Anyway I liked content and storytelling and quest count. It's really good. Some quests needs more hints. Or paid-information (with game money) by some NPC.That can be awesome. Customization detail is good for now.  Some texts are wrong typed. I liked level designs. But some meshes haven't got collisions. Also i liked the combat system for now. But i hope it'll improved by developers for next beta or commercial version. And i hope premium items won't be a suffer for players.

For now i just can say most serious problem is animations. And potential problem is premium items. So if we need to rate the beta i can give 75/100.

I'll post same text to forums. I hope Funcom take that serious.

Have a good day !

this game is sooooo bad. i signed up for the beta and deleted after about 10 mins. and i dont wanna hear "its not the finished the product"

i may have given this game a chance if it was pre alpha, but at this late in the development its clear to see this game is a stinker!

the controls are diabolical. your character has a turning circle that a bus would be ashamed of. the characters look ok and the locations are cool, but thats it.

i was hoping this would be mmorpg that got me into the genre, guess ill have to wait

I see the mmo mindless killing to gain skills part of the game in the video.

But where is the video that shows why we are doing this?  Are we searching for clues to solve mysteries that give us special powers / abilities?

Gameplay looks incredibly dull even for a MMO.

Graphics ok.. locations looks great.

but you do get gear and weapons to upgrade ur stats they just dont change the way you look, I have played a fair amount of hours into the beta and now for me the achievement is unlocking all the cool abilities to choose from and combine them to suit ur style i think its a cool concept, also the quest have alot more sense of achievement over say wow as some of the quests you really need to think about how its going to be done and can be quite challenging and fun, the more time i spent playing the game the more i enjoyed it for what it is and am loving how funcom have broken away from the standard mmo ways

lantonis

btw whats the point if there is no gear or weapons to get? what do you achieve in this game?

The combat is clunky yes, but the graphic and setting is awesome.

Playing the beta now (and posting on the in-game browser). My initial impression was much like what many people have said -- it's clunky, the graphics are kinda... off somehow, the animations and combat are somewhat unpolished, the interface feels like a work in progress. >>> All that having been said, now that I'm getting into it, it's really engrossing. The world is the most compelling I've seen in any MMO, the storytelling is great, but the thing that really sets The Secret World apart is that it's not just another "Fetch me 8 bear asses" quest MMO. Though it does have some FedEx quests, a significant number of the quests are puzzles, and often downright tough (and this is just in the starting town). Many require finding real-world information via Google or elsewhere, paying close attention to the environment and a good deal of patience. I spent a good couple of hours trying to figure out one clue (though I can't see spending that kind of time on an ongoing basis). >>> It's essentially an adventure MMO, and it is not a game you will be blazing through to rush to max level (though there are already quest spoilers aplenty online for the impatient or unimaginative). I think it will struggle to find an audience precisely because it requires you to think. It still needs quite a bit more polish. But I'll definitely be giving it a shot.

Great change of pace, and about as non-linear as it is possible to get for a MMO.The biggest complaint that I've had so far, other than expected glitches for a Beta? The /idle stance of arms crossed (/idle_armscrossed emote currently), which does not put your weapons away.... so you can have an assault rifle sticking out of the side of your chest....Not perfect, but great game.

I couldn't agree more.  My brain has been looking for something to do in an MMO for years.  This game is heaven for me.  I didn't expect much after Age of Conan - but this is bar-setting.

I have to agree with other posters that felt the environment was well done, but the character and NPC animations are sub-par.  It's true... but you know what - I just don't care anymore.  The storyline and the mystery/puzzle missions are THAT good.  This is a little piece of MMO heaven.

Domaldel
Domaldel

@jjfddf Fair enough :-)Glad that you don't jump to conclusions like some do :-)I hope I'll see you in-game later. But if not, it's fair enough as it sounds like you're giving the game a fair chance :-)Just remember that this truly is a beta, even though some people act like it's a commercial for the game.

Domaldel
Domaldel

@freespirithtr27 Fair enough :-) It's true that there's still placeholders in the game. And it is still a beta.As for the nda, well funcom have a different way of dealing with that then a lot of other companies.Basically they never lift them, just add more beta players without it when they feel like it.I happen to know some of the beta players so I know if will improve a lot till launch. If it will improve enough to meet your standards is a different matter, I hope it will. But could you please give some hint about exactly what you didn't like about the combat, please? We know about some things that will improve down the line, but some things mentioned by some players haven't been addressed by Funcom yet, and that includes things like some problems with strafing apparently...Was that one of your problems?

Domaldel
Domaldel

@Armyboy5 *shrugs*It might change till launch who knows...I suggest popping in on the forum and mentioning that concern if you feel that it's a problem.

Domaldel
Domaldel

@atahanbozkurt Oh and another thing. The missions that's to hard to understand without hints are in some cases actually intended to be that hard ;-)Some of them are supposed to be solved in a team.

Domaldel

@atahanbozkurt Oh, and have a nice day you too :-)As for 75/100 I sure can live with that ^^Even though it'll get some stiff competition up ahead :-)

Domaldel
Domaldel

@atahanbozkurt Sorry, but no I'm not close to Funcom or employed by them...I'm an unemployed 25 year old guy living in Norway who just happen to be a fan of some of Ragnars previous works ;-)(And being unemployed I got way to much time on my hands for stuff like posting things here ;-)(Anyway, I was previously a student in cultural heritage management.)And yes, I am subjective. But I've also followed this game enough to know a little about what will change down the line. And yes, you're right about the animations. It's been commented on countless times. It is a problem, but the devs are aware of it, and they're telling us that they're still placeholders. And I do know some beta players who says that there's some real change going on in their end.If it's enough or not I can't tell, but I'd rather people reserved their judgement on that account till closer to launch at least (or preferably till afterwards)Funcom got a reputation for launching games a bit to early and they got that reputation for a good reason... As for the GUI, they're aware of that too and are working on it.Some of the other stuff...Please report them! The more bugs they know about before launch the better :-)I want my future fix to be good enough by launch to retain it's players for a long time ^^ Anyway, some of the other stuff you mentioned simply went over my head I'm afraid, sorry... Anyway, the forums needs people who got a clue like you so it would be nice if you could pop in and leave that text there as well :-)(Most of the members there can handle constructive negative criticism although some can't, it's just that they get a bit tired when people complain about stuff they more or less know  will be improved and when they judge the game by it's beta stage as if it was already finished...)

@zella05 10 min?..lol just creating the char and the vids from beginning take that long.Great game test! *wink

Domaldel
Domaldel

@zella05 Hum, regarding the turning...That's actually a valid concern.A lot of people have complained about stuff like the animations that we know will change or they think the combat it boring (although they're only seeing the basic in the beginning)But we haven't heard anything from the devs about stuff like change in how things like turning around works. As for the actual controls...Wasn't it possible to change the settings or something?

Domaldel
Domaldel

@arielstarfire This particular video isn't showing us that. But we've been given plenty of tasty examples of stuff that does. Not all the missions will be like that, this game does have it's kill 10 zombie missions as well, missions that don't have that impressive stories. But it also have other kinds where a group of people might still be unable to come up with the result.

Domaldel
Domaldel

@eizenstahl Dull compared to say Goldshire in WoW or compared to a non-starting area of a MMO?After all, if you're talking about the beta then you are limited to very few skills and a very small part of the game world...

Domaldel
Domaldel

@lantonis Learning the story, achieving achievements. And there is weapons in this game (and gear, they're just not traditional armor that's visible to people seeing your character)And if you want to show off your achievements then ca half the clothing in the game will only be unlocked to you by achieving various in game milestones or other achievements meaning that if you really do want too you can show off your gaming prowess ;-)

Domaldel
Domaldel

@Microsteve Well, judging by your avatar in here it seems like you like south park ;-)

Domaldel
Domaldel

@Ikthog Well, it is a work in progress, all of it.We won't see what they have in mind till launch and even then there might be more polishing that might be done afterwards. It's one of the nice things with a MMO, there are always improvements made to them ;-)As for the clues...I think it is possible for the community to do something about that if it want to.We just have to work together a little to make it harder to accidentally find a spoiler you don't want to see.For instance by only posting spoilers after using cryptography or something like that ;-)I mean, it's not like it would hurt the people that want the spoilers to look up say rot13 and do a quick decryption  ;-)

@Ikthog  I'm the kind of MMO player that reads every quest and I absolutely love the fleshed out story of TSW.  At first, and in my previous post, I mentioned the frustration I had due to not being able to load up on quests because you can only have 1 red quest, 3 blues, 1 purple, etc... but after playing more, I realized the point of this is because the quest hubs aren't really quest hubs.  They purposely don't want you to treat them like traditional MMO towns/villages.  They want it to play more like a single player game where you go out and experience the world and explore.  Pick up other missions as you finish them, rather than running back to some hub.I have a friend who is a power gamer in MMOs.  Doesn't read anything, just blows through the content to get to the "end game" and farm good gear.  It was extremely frustrating to play with him.  This is NOT the MMO to play if you're that kind of gamer.  It's like a single-payer MMO, if that makes any sense.  He complained for 30 mins that he didn't have the code for a quest until somebody in-game explained to him where to find it.I'm actually intrigued that a company finally is taking a chance with making people think about quests, but I fear people are going to hate that part because they have to go outside the game to figure puzzles out.  Blizzard has actually stated that they do not want "mystery" quests in WoW because "people will just go look it up online anyway".  I just hope TSW continues to craft quests that are a mystery because you have to think about them and not a mystery because you just don't know where the hell to go.

Domaldel
Domaldel

@username28753 Regarding the weapon thing, I suggest that you head over to the official forum and report it (if it's not in the known issue list) or optionally comment on it in one of the other feedback threads.I donno if it'll ever change, but it don't hurt notifying them about it.Regarding the animations...I donno if that one will be changed or not.But keep in mind that a lot of the animations are still placeholders. That one might be one of them (or it might not be)In either case it won't change unless they're made aware of it...

Domaldel
Domaldel

@lantonis That's an subjective opinion...And one witch a lot of others do not share.

lantonis
lantonis

@Domaldel btw are you part of the secret world team? You seem to respond in every comment and try to defend the game:P

Ikthog
Ikthog

@Domaldel I think the key for the community is to make hints available, without just giving away the solution. Parts of the Kingsmouth Code were just completely confusing, and without some hints I doubt I would have finished it all. But I didn't want someone to just tell me the answer either. <p>If you really *think* about the characters and situations in some of the quests, you can figure things out, but most games don't actually expect you to pay that close attention to things, and remember that that one guy mentioned something in passing that was relevant in solving a puzzle. Even the town's Web site has clues, but nothing in the game suggests that you should go out and look and see if there even is such a Web site (at least nothing that I found). <p>I'd love to see them do a thing where characters communicate with you via out-of-game email or even call you on the phone to give you clues. That's the one advantage of making a modern-day conspiracy/supernatural MMO, you can take advantage of all aspects of the real world as part of your game.

Ikthog
Ikthog

@Sidivan Yeah, anyone playing any game can look up the solution online, read the walkthroughs, find the location of all the hidden stuff... if all you want out of a game is to blaze through the content to get to the phat loot. I'm not sure why that's fun, but whatever. Players like your friend (and really, most WoW-style players) will get bored quickly and leave, which is all the better. The only downside is that you don't want the game to feel like a ghost town (well, except to the extent that the town is already filled with ghosts in this game). It's not for everyone, but it is much more rewarding than typical MMOs if you take the time to experience it properly.

Domaldel
Domaldel

@Sidivan They will make more as long as there's enough players playing (and therefor paying the subscription) to pay for the expenses of making them ;-)

lantonis
lantonis

@Domaldel Some said its good because if its features. But not the gameplay. And others say the gameplay sucks. I tried it and the gameplay at least for me its not good at all. Not something i would enjoy playing

Domaldel
Domaldel

@lantonis Non for the team, just a fan of the writing of Ragnar Tørnquist, the guy behind the story of TSW, TLJ and Dreamfall :-)He also played a part in making the AO story, but not as big an role there as in the games I just mentioned.

Domaldel
Domaldel

@Ikthog Sure, hints too ;-)But I still think that some simple cryptography would do the trick quite nicely ;-)I mean, just look up rot13, it's dead simple ^^Just give each letter in the alphabet a number, A being 1 and B being 2 and so one, add or remove 13 from that number and see what letter you get instead ;-)So for instance TSW =  GFJ in ROT13 ;-)And Ikthog =  VxgubtJust head over to rot13.com for more easy converting ;-)

Domaldel
Domaldel

@lantonis Again, beta *shrugs*It's not intended as a commercial for the game. But if you feel that way, please do visit the forum and tell the devs about your experience and exactly why you didnt enjoy it. After all, the only way for them to improve the game is to learn about it's weaknesses if they're there :-)  Because some of the things you' ve mentioned is things that haven't been repeated hundreds of times there yet.

Those complaining about combat animations or boring spells, those things will change either later in the game development or later in the actual game. But things like response to the mouse movements, how easy or hard it is to strafe and stuff like that is something I haven't seen a response from the devs on yet.I guess partly because they might not have seen any comments on that yet.

lantonis
lantonis

@Domaldel wow had a really really good gameplay and i can easily say as most of the people say that is tha best ammo. Not only for its content. I tried guild wars which again didnt have a nice gameplay, better than secret world though. Tried champions online which was ok. And a few more but none reached the smooth and nice gameplay of wow. And yes since the 1st levels you could tell if wow was fun or not. Only mmo that reached wow's gameplay is starwars which i wont say that i tried it for long but only for a few levels and the gameplay was enjoyable and pretty much a copy of wow which i think is the ideal gameplay for an mmo. And remember i only speak for gameplay / the way the player moves etc. Not content / story / spells / powers blah blah. The content might be nice, but dunno cant talk for that since i didnt try it that much.

@lantonis There's a lot of people that enjoyed the gameplay as well, but quite honestly the gameplay won't really shine till you've played the game for a bit (and that means past the beta)Because quite frankly, this beta isn't a commercial for the game,  it really is a stress test to check out weather or not it can handle a larger crowd and also possibly if people will get too spread out by the missions or not and so one and so forth.Anyway, would you judge WoW based solely on the content and game play experienced in Goldshire?I mean, a level two paladin or priest in WoW isn't exactly amazingly fun to play either compared to later in the game.At least here you won't need to grind through the starting content again and again to try a different set of game play (unless you want to do so of course)
