rating is unfair. obviously this is no casual game. i enjoy the controls, they add to the difficulty. it barrows from the oldschool mario formula where theres some delay in the actions unlike fighting games where every button smash comes out instantly. this is an adult game and the difficulty is welcomed. Gonna go for all the trophies!
The only reasons I even played this game was because I got it free with my Playstation Plus membership and nostalgia since the gameplay reminded me of old Sega Genesis games. It's a fun game but I question it's replayability since the control issues mentioned in the review do make it extremely annoying and frustrating at times.
@Raykuza Yeah, I got good at the game, after dying a lot and learning what the hell I was doing wrong. In my opinion, the controls aren't awful. You just have to get good at them, which happens when you play through the whole game. Now, the thing about this is the controls aren't universally accepted to be bad, because if you go to GameFaqs, there's a group of people who have absolutely no problem with the game whatsoever. I read a review the other day (forgot where) that gave the game a 9 and pretty much said what I said in my review, that the controls take getting used to. Having to learn how a game plays and actually concentrating on controlling your character does not make the controls bad. If you still believe that, than you don't have the patience for the game. Simple as that.
@JustPlainLucas Not even true. I played the demo and watched the reviewer play. This guy is pretty good despite the completely unresponsive character. I'm sure you were pretty good at the game, too. Those controls really are awful.
Many of these deaths I saw in your video review where YOUR fault, Tom. From someone who just beat the game, I can admit I sucked at it. Now man up and admit you sucked at it too. Blaming the game's controls... You're better that that.. :P
If you going to do a reboot, do it in next gen graphics, controls and style...or don't do it at all.
I take that back, i read the beginning of the review. Not even a good paragraph for the story. Disappointing.
I downloaded the demo to give this a try and hated the controls. Specifically the backflip to gain greater height. I have to jump, while "skidding" to do this and skidding itself is done by changing direction quickly. I became so frustrated with the hit and miss nature of trying to do this that I ended the demo before finishing. I think what frustrates (and angers) me the most is that this is completely unnecessary. The developers CHOSE this design scheme and obviously didn't look for any feedback on it. I mean it's not even a normal design option. Double tapping or holding the jump button are two common control schemes that are already familiar to gamers, without coming up with some complicated method. Complicated for the sake of complicated (or "challenging" as I'm sure the developers were aiming for) is just poor design. There is no shortage of GOOD games out there. Frankly I see no reason to waste any time on those that make me fight with poor controls to find glimmers of enjoyment.
I do not play 2D games anymore but I like BloodRayne so I download the demo just to try it and I love it is there some-thing wrong with the controls of this game no there is nothing wrong with the controls it's me I am not playing this game right it takes me 45 minutes on how the controls work after that moving about the environment combat jumping to higher platforms was effortless. This game is beautifully done the level design is awesome the art work is fantastic a sure buy for me. I do not agree with this review is spot-on or got it right because the review is not playing the game right this review is unsuccessfully making the jumps so to show the game has problems showing what they want to show making up the bad of the game personal biased opinion that this game (the reviewer did not compare this game to other games but I know better Mc Shea is bias ) is a infringement to Outland with the same game playing. Mc Shea's game bashed Dant's Inferno and in my opinion this one to playing ths game badly to justify the low rating to discourage gamers from buying this game. BloodRayne feels and plays smooth to me when I got the controls down and played the game the right way I enjoyed BloodRayne Betrayal the demo was hard challenging rewarding and alot of fun (I died alot) I like this game I give this game 8.5.
If it's true about the controls bringing the game down that much, it's a shame because damn, both the combat and platforming LOOK like they'd be a lot of fun. Maybe I'll try the demo.
@zeussrapidfire These days companies use us as their testers then they patch the hell out of a game if there was any concern for the fanbase/consumer. I guess the era of releasing a polished hassle free product is behind us.
How do developers screw up so bad...I mean they have to play games to get the intial idea right? Then how do they not know that a game dosen't feel correct? It's as simple as "let us make a castlevania or ninja gaiden rip off" when our game feels and reacts like the inspiration then bingo your done. Maybe even though it is probably not cost effective these companys should do outside testing or betas so a third party can guide them. Something got to happen because I love downloading new games but you can't return or resale them...they are yours forever so they need to be worth your money!!! The risk becomes greater then the reward!
He got it right on all points and it's a shame because the style and concept of the game is awesome. Just trying to do the backflip thing to get to a higher point takes too much thought. It's something that should be very intuitive but ends up being the exact opposite. Again--shame. smh.
He's right. Got the demo and thought something was wrong with controller and swapped to another. Really wanted this to be better.
I pre-ordered this for PS3. This unnecessary game is proof of what NOT to do for milking a franchise. The game needed some more refinement in the controls, they are really the only thing holding the game back from a higher score and make the frustration level more tolerable. It is pretty much Castlevania with Bloodrayne as the character. I just wish Majesco would make a proper Bloodrayne 3. Bloodrayne is my favorite female game character and some of my favorite games. I expected more for this franchise....
The demo told me all I needed to know about the game. It looks great but the controls can be annoying sometimes. It's a shame because I really wanted to support this game...2D forever and all that, not to mention a game with a female lead. But a 2D platformer's most important aspect is the controls; they must be tight or the game doesn't work, no matter how pretty it looks. Though, the person playing the game really should have put the dash move to use more often.
@gc88, I love retro gaming and difficult games (check out my Super Meat Boy and Outland reviews), and I even enjoy Wayforward Studio immensely (check out my Boy and His Blob, Brave and the Bold, and Lit reviews). This game, though... wow. Chapter 13 is pure torture. I understand why others dig it, but smooth controls may be the most important aspect of a game, and BloodRayne never feels good.
Those flaws are just those flaws that I don't like to see in games. I wonder why IGN gave this game a 9 if it had all these flaws.
@gc88 The problems should not be in the game in the first place. I had a really hard time in the demo as far as platforming go and getting a backflip off a small platform is a disaster. Why not buy Hard Corps instead?
lol This guy is just terrible at this game. The controls take some getting used to, but once you learn them, the game is great. If you're into retro gaming and enjoy the challenge of them, definitely try this game out. Don't assume the game is bad because a reviewer says so.
@Gelugon_baat I agree and i thank gamespot for this, as i could of purchased this game tomorrow and gave up straight away as there's bloody issues with it.
This game looks really good, i hate it when they can't fix simple problems and i personally thought most games had to be tested before release anyway, terrible tbh. Nice one Tom on the great Review.
