What worries me most about 1999 mode is the no ammo vending machine trophy that goes with it. I avoided buying ammo on my first playthrough on hard to get myself ready for it, and there were a couple of spots where I completely drained my weapons.
Hopefully a better understanding of the game will help me get through it.
I think it's funny that they're making this mode sound superhard all over the net it's a hell of a mode to play through the second time once you get past the first few minutes it's a lot more fun just like in the other bioshock games it makes you get better with the game mechanics that are given to you you have to conserve ammo use the right powers at the right time it's just awesome
I expected it to be a lot harder then this, just the fight with siren and last sequence are a bit challenging but nothing to write a home about. Bronco and especially upgraded crows are insanely good, even against handyman. Went with upgradable carbine and handcannon and shield first.
Who would go through the game and upgrade their salts to max before their shield? If you did that you are seriously mental or were playing on Easy. I played on Hard the first time and I barely ever used vigors. I kept getting the little hint at the bottom saying "Don't forget to use Vigors!". I also found that at one point when I had upgraded the vigors I liked, namely the electricity one and the levetating one I didn't bother nor particularly need to upgrade any more. That meant that if you picked up ammo all money you found went straight into your wallet and barely needed to spend anything. The only time my money dropped was when I had to fight a mob of smaller enemies and one large one like a mob and a handyman for instance. Also Lady Comstock was a difficult one for me but that was more a scarcity of ammo from not having enemies that could be killed long enough to get their ammo and quite an overwhelming lack of cover in the graveyard.
I'm on my second playthrough, and I LOWERED the difficulty. I'm about up to the 3rd act (the part where the vox populi is kicking a**). There really isn't any story elements, so far, that warrant playing a second time (most likely because the important ones are repeated at the end of the game anyway).
STEALTH would be the way to go on 1999 (obviously there are some fights that are mandatory).
I have to say, i was pretty disappointed by the 1999-mode. I played on Hard on my first paly through, as i always because i just enjoy the challange, died a couple of times as one would expect. when i then started a new game on 1999-mode, i did not seems a single bit harder than on hard mode, only difference i noticed that you loose more money. which for me atleast was not such a big deal because i died 3 times when i was half way throguh the game.
My fav. for 1999 mode is the gear with temporarly invurnelability when jump on or off skyline, also Shock Jockey traps everywhere in the Graveyard when fighting Lady Comstock's ghost. :-)
But also every vigor combo or without combo is very useful, but i fired mostly with guns and/or shooting enemies from distance with headshots combined with Overkill gear. :-) Need patience and collecting as many loot as possible.
I died more on hard mode than on 1999 mode, mainly because in Hard mode I didn't realize how important the gear was. In 1999 mode, the two or thee most important pieces of gear were Winter's Heart (gives invincibility getting on or off skyline (or any hook)), invincibility when eating health, and last man standing (getting health if you kill someone with low health). With upgrading health first with last man standing, when your health was down to about 30% (which is still a lot of health if you upgrade health) you would get revived. Also, with Liz giving you health packs, you would become invincible when you eat it.
As for winter's heart, whenever there was any sky-hook place, either skyline or other hook, you can be completely invincible. Simply jump up, immediately jump down and you're invincible. When the first part goes away, jump up again and immediately jump down. In this method, you can Melee all of the handymen, never needing a single shot fired, and not lose one ounce of health. It is also great on the last level you can sky hook around.
As for upgrades, upgrade machine gun damage, shotgun damage, Carbine Damage, sniper Damage, and at end RPG/Volley Damage. As for vigors, upgrade shock, possession, and undertow. You don't need to upgrade bronco or crows, their level one works great, especially if you are using them to knock people off columbia or distract them to kill them.
I was slightly disappointed with it though, they pitched it as this total game changer where you may even have to start from the beginning again if you ended up making a bunch of bad choices. It was ultimately just a very hard mode without the navigation button.
@kolz4everOnly a newb needs mods to play a game. I, personally, don't even search
things about a game, including walkthroughs or cheats, until I've beaten
it at least once on the second-highest difficulty. The sheer use of
mods detracts from your skill as a gamer. That's like saying, "I can
beat you at the 100 meter dash... If I have rocket boots and your
shoelaces are tied together!"
@musalala I really don't get what is so special about the last part in the game. I beat it on my first try on hard difficulty. And on my first try on 1999 mode. But i do have a friend stuck on that part on normal difficulty :-/
@Gazmabob Too be honest i haven't really died that often so far. I think maybe about 3 times at this point, surprisingly enough i've been killed by soldiers more than patriots, handymen, or turrents probably because I get cocky around them.
That being said i actually died a LOT more during Hard mode. I think the experience form my first playthough along with investing in and using my salts more wisely helped alot. I found my self using possession more which has been incredibly helpful.
@Dannystaples14 Maxing out your salt capacity is like turning on easy mode.
I hardly used vigors during my hard mode playthrough, but when I started up 1999 I decided to play with vigors. Most fights actually felt significantly easier in 1999 mode when I took the time to toss around powered up traps.
@Dannystaples14 I played on hard and used vigors very often. I spent my stat upgrades pretty evenly, but I usually kept salts ahead of the other two. Really, it's all about personal preference and your playstyle, there is no "right" way to play the game.
@Dannystaples14 I played on normal and upgraded my salts before putting anything into health and probably had upgraded my shield only once or twice. I used the vigours all the time. There's always something interesting to do with them for me. I just get bored if all I'm doing is shooting things.
@Ronin893 Yes I did and as other mentioned it's not that hard. I didn't even experiment enough with weapons and vigours and misses some of those great combinations mentioned here that would have made my playthrough much easier but could still finish it without ever feeling the frustration that comes with unfair difficulty.
@koospetoors it removes the navigation button...daaaaymn tbf I only ever use it to make sure I have explored every part of an area before I move on to the next one but how will I know weather I'm going to far in before I can go back
@olegavi323 there are few reasons you need to use songbird faster as you can and kill the landed enemies, cause they attack the bird from down, and decreasing his health bar. By mi side I used my electricity and ravens and ravens traps and full up grated ravens cause corpses left more traps, and kill a lot no-mechanic enemies, and with patriots the possessions works great.
@Xerexs@josh_heggie hahaha bullshit? why would i lie? your an idiot. my gamertag is 'heeggie' look for yaself as it clearly upsets you. its was fucking easy. you either haven't played it or ya just simply shit.
@Dantes0007 Bro played in on hard on PC, and my pc was still quit slow playing the game on Lowest settings. Gotta love my laptop. But aah well hard mode seemed to easy for me. Granted the final fight gave me some troubles. But to remind in this final fight is to use your song bird for the zeppelins. You only have to destroy 2 zeppelins or something, the white ones, to win the lvl. And with the patriots on deck they don't focus you so stand behind them and rampage them to death, after the first patriot killed pick up his gattling gun and start raping the other patriots from behind.
