I have to agree, it does suck, there are a few commands which work pretty well and do make life better, but as it is, the technology is still kinda crappy and it makes the system seem like a cheap toy because the functions aren't solid enough. Waving your arms around actually becomes tiring and talking to a machine still feels stupid, it really seems like a waste since operating a controller is the easiest thing in the world. I still haven't managed to turn the box on with my voice... (no need to comment, it's too obvious). I really think these executives dickheads need to lay off the coke a little.

I agree with alucard below. Yes, you will have some trial and error, but you have to speak with a certain vernacular, just like Siri. I've got it down. Maybe 1% error rate now (which is to be expected, but is awesome for something so ambitious,) and.....these guys are not experts. I call Bias!

@voice_of_enigma Honestly I was not implying bias although it initially did cross my mind, right now I'm thinking it's possibly lack of time with the device.

LOL.....68 times out of a 100 "Xbox On" worked??! So why is it then that I have also used this command around 100 times, or more, and it only failed me around 3-4 times in total? Voice commands are not perfect, but they work 90-95% of the time for me overall. Several commands have never failed me once. Yes you have to articulate properly, is that too much to ask considering the amount of commands available?

Sure it does not work as well with chatter, but even then it still works remarkably well because I usually have no issues pausing a movie with a voice command even with the volume turned up high. Anyways I won't waste anymore time here, but this video just is not credible sorry, if you guys want to see a good voice command test for the X1, go to IGN they made a great demonstration.

@Alucard_Prime Gotcha, any site that agrees with you or demonstrates that Kinect is awesome is credible....any site that had issues with it working or looks down on kinect is not credible. makes sense.

The demos i have seen have been so hit and miss its not even funny...which goes to the point this video was making. If you can't get it right then don't make the claims that MS has made about the Kinect...and right now they don't have it right. BTW kudos to you for being one of the lucky ones, im sure many are envious of you.

@raydawg2000Nope, I don't care if they don't like it, or if they have issues with it. But this video seems to have skimmed over the whole thing very quickly, without giving any evidence or examples. At least with IGN it's just a guy giving voice commands, you get to actually see it, it's just more credible because he is not presenting his opinion, he is just showing it.

I agree the voice recognition is far from perfect, it's just seems these guys had the worst possible experience, I wonder why we could each have such different experiences.

@raydawg2000 Fair enough, I guess it's different when you take it within that context. So far it seems then that many people have no major issues with it, while others do, I'm curious as to why that is. Like you said, I do consider myself one of the lucky ones mine works most of the time I guess the best thing I can say is that your experience may be completely different than these 2 guys after you try it.

@Alucard_Prime There was a video on here a couple weeks ago with nothing but demonstrations of hit and miss commands...more miss than hit. They using that as a reference when they were forming their opinion.

The Kinect commands are not meant to be the "exclusive" way to use the console. You can't see past your own bias. You are supposed to use all of the controls of the system when you need them. Changing games, recording clips, and snapping applications on the side all work great! When you just sit around testing the same thing over and over to try and mess it up, of course you are going to find something...eventually...but give it a break already. Comparing to the PS camera is a joke, the entire PS4 OS is a joke just as it was with PS3. PS4 is nothing but a graphics upgrade, Xbox One is an ambitious new concept. Both systems aren't perfect at the moment but Microsoft's cloud idea and abundance of servers puts it miles ahead of the competition

@UNCStriker88 Uhh - PS4 Gaikai cloud services are coming next year in the USA. The service is being beta tested right now. http://www.twinfinite.net/blog/2013/12/18/sony-testing-cloud-service-now/. There's a big difference between having an ambitious new concept and that concept actually working. In my opinion, MS is being overly ambitious - this is why the Kinect is still buggy and why they had to cut back on the services they promised at launch. If the Kinect worked 90% of the time for 90% of users and recognized commands that didn't rely on specific phrasing, then that would be something to get excited about. As it is now, the voice command feature of the kinect needs a lot of tweeking.

@UNCStriker88 I was actually following and somewhat agreeing with your statement until you talked about how bad the PS4 OS is. Then you lost me. In my experience, I've been less than impressed with the voice commands on the XOne. Also, while the commands aren't the 'exclusive' way to use the console, it's the big one that Microsoft stuck to throughout the whole mess. That said, I expected it to be a little bit better.

We'll, it's not entirely a joke, but it is slower than Xbox One. I really hope Sony invests the money they are charging now to improve their online infrastructure. They have a ways to go, though before catching up with Microsoft, who has been doing the online console thing for what....almost 15 years, now?

@hogg0713 If they had done that, you would have likely seen how great voice commands work, uinlike what these 2 guys are stating. IGN did that so I recommend you check out their feature:

It's a cool technology but not one that's fleshed out enough. Though I rarely have an experience where the Kinect doesn't understand me.

The thing I like the most is when I walk in with my hands full and say "Xbox On" while I'm putting my stuff away. It flicks on the XB1, the tv, the DVR and the surround sound system all at once. That's super convenient.

It's also very handy when you tell it to turn the volume up or down.

One thing I noticed that's not consistent with the command phrases is turning it on or off. For example; you say "Xbox, On" to get it to turn on. But to turn it off you have to say "Xbox, Turn Off" instead of just "Xbox Off."

I think there is a setting you have to enable that lets the Kinect learn your voice and how you speak, but this requires it sending its voice analyzing to Microsoft servers, which I'm cool with. It makes it function better.

Google has the same type of feature you can enable on Android phones where it keeps your voice data online, attached to your Google account. Now I can speak completely normal to my phone and it doesn't miss a word. Microsoft has the same thing, you just have to enable it.

@Vodoo I can understand why they use 'turn off' instead of 'off'. We often don't annunciate the last sound of a word clearly and 'off' would sound identical to 'on' if the last consonant is missed.

My friend's kinect is so bad that after literally 7 or 8 consecutive "Xbox, go to Internet Explorer"s on day one, we thought it was an app you had to get from the store. Just today when he said "Xbox on" it didn't work the first two times. He spoke to it as you would a person, but the internet explorer thing was both of us, and I for one, enunciated the command very clearly. I've yet to try a ps4, so I can't comment there, but I do agree that it's bad enough to not warrant being the main form of navigation.

This video is wrong. The only thing these guys are experts in, is spreading false or slightly biased info. My Kinect works flawlessly. The only time it doesn't work is when I completely fumble over a word, and even then it still recognizes what I was trying to say. My kinect sits between two speakers and even with voices coming out of those, it still understands me just fine.

I do not own a PS4, but i have a friend who does. When I tried the PS4 camera voice commands, I had more trouble with getting it to understand me. I don't know if he calibrated it properly or not, it was in a smaller room with less ambient sound than my living room, but it did not work quite as well.

Its clear that these two guys favor PS4 over Xbox One, and that's fine. However when doing professional presentations like this, a bit more fact and less biasness goes a long way toward credibility.

There is something really weird going on at gamespot. Now I happen to know that Kinect works around 98% of the time for me, I also saw IGN just released a video slamming Kinect with commands, the success rate was around 90 to 95 percent. How is it that these bought and paid for shady characters are saying it didn't work for them, but surprise surprise ps4 worked better??? BOGUS where is the video of ps4 working better, you can easily fake a video of Kinect failing but lets see the Ps camera working as you tools say.

@greeborg Come on man, don't be so naïve. These guys found a few areas that the ps4 slightly excels in, and decided to make videos comparing to xbo. This is such an obviously biased series that you would have to be in complete denial not to see it. Not sure who they think they are fooling. Where are the videos comparing the two on areas xbo is superior?

This particular feature they flat out lied in the comparison, Kinect actually is superior.
