Ask GameSpot - Bravely Default
Find out what make this release so exciting and why it could be the answer to your JRPG dreams.
I think it's probably an alright game, but I guess for me there's just more interesting games on the 3DS that I'd rather play, right now at least. I have only had my 3DS for about 2 months, and I have 3 games for it atm - and I have a ton to do on those. There are a bunch of other games I'd like to get someday, but Bravely Default isn't even in the top 5.
I did enjoy the 4 Heroes of Light when I owned it though, and the game is probably good for someone like me. But I think character customization is something I've grown to like having in RPGs with games like Dragon Quest 9, and otherwise I know the kinds of things to expect from a game like Bravely Default. If it were a deeper or more graphically impressive JRPG, something more refreshing, then I might be more interested. But that isn't the case.
I'm not sure I have it in me to buy a game called Bravely Default. Could it possibly have a more stupid name? Does it bode well for the writing talents of the team? Clue: no.
After all the typical MMO, FPS and third person action-adventures I've played lately, I think this game will be a breath of fresh air. Gonna grab me a copy today after work.
I will never undertand why someone likes JRPG, they are BORING in every single aspect. The gameplay is nonexistent, the narrative is childish, and the graphics are lame.
People used to play that when they had no other opitions.
I like modernity, that's why i hate jrpgs.
Looks a lot more like Fire Emblem...
But anyway the characters look a little too cute/weirdly sexualised for my liking.
So they did this entire segment without answering arguably the most important question? No one thought to ask: "Hey GS! I an neither Japanese or under the age of 13 and therefore I don't own a 3DS. Is there a chance of this game coming out for iOS, Android, PSN, or XBL?"
Don't get me wrong. I'm sure there a decent number of adults that own a 3DS but not NEARLY enough for this game to realize its true potential in sales. Those people over the age of 25 looking for that old school, nostalgic, Final Fantasy of old, feel in a game could be a pretty deep well.
@Diegoctba I suspect you might be a troll but I think there's a reduced interest in the west with jrpgs these day.
I think part of the problem is that some mediocre examples are giving jrpgs a bad name. Final Fantasy games are all some people think of and experience when it comes to jrpgs and because of that when that series isn't at it's peak many people in the west start thinking jrpgs in general are boring.
Would also say jrpg's cover a large range. And people might have different opinions where to draw the line. I consider Monster Hunter 3 a jrpg. I'm sure many disagree but character advancement can be though more than just xp bars.
The most exciting looking rpg I'm waiting for right now is X.
I don't think Bravely Default is likely to live up to hype judging from the demo though it's probably a solid game.
@Diegoctba Maybe some people enjoy that. I know I sure do. There's a lot of different people in this world, and boring and overdone FPS and action and racing and sports games can be just as meh to the rest of us.
@Diegoctba I was gonna buy this game, but you changed my mind. Thanks for saving my gift certificates.
@Diegoctba Is Fire Emblem a JRPG? Because that game is fantastic.
The gameplay is, well, central, its a strategy game. Its very engaging and fun.
The story is pretty gripping.
The characters are wonderful and I love all of them.
The graphics are stunning and the cutscenes? Don't even get me started.
Basically its a great game, and I'd recommend it to anyone.
@Diegoctba To each their own then. While I prefer the Western RPGs, I'm open to trying a JRPG, especially when one considers that was what dominated the console market in the 80s. So anyone growing up with a NES, When I think back in terms of quality, a lot of the JRPGs were of higher quality opposed to their western counterparts on the PC.
As for the MMORPGs, I simply do not have the time to dedicate towards it. I barely have time to fire up the XBox.
@Diegoctba Why are you even here then? That's like going into a rug store saying you only like hardwood floors.
I hate mmorpgs and prefer JRPGs to modern RPGs. Sorry that everyone in the world isn't you.
I like new worlds, numbers and music...those are 3 tiers of understanding...discovery.
Next would be monsters, class-upgrades & gear...growth.
...I also like saving the world.
@Darth_Aloysius That is the perfect description of this art style. I find myself unable to get into anime with this style, but I will probably give this one a go.
@SipahSalar HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Nice catch :)
@PosiTVEMinD355 What in the hell is One Piece Romance Dawn?
@PosiTVEMinD355 One Piece Romance Dawn isn't worth it. Played it, finished it, regretted it (I say this as a true fanboy).
@SphinxDemon That's why 3DS is pwning.
@heresjonny99 Yeah I got that too, I mean everyone seems to be running around in miniskirts lol.
@heresjonny99 there 18, so technically teens (15 in Japan), but even then the costumes aren't that sexual and even then you don't even have to wear the costumes.
@heresjonny99 which part of the trailer did you find sexy? Yes they're children like in their image, but that's more of an art style.
@rawkstar007 I won't lie, I got my 3DS first for all the RPGs I knew it would be getting seeing how the DS has about 558 of them, and second for Nostalgia and I could not be happier with it. And would you seriously rather play this game on a smartphone?
@Vidpci not cool at all but i did lmao
@Vidpci Seriously, not cool at all.
@invisebal I thought it was a pumpkin lol
@Sevenizz Does JRPG stand for JR. Role Playing Game? :)
@Sevenizz I'd expect nothing more from an Xbot.
@Ayato_Kamina_1 @chrisall76 It wasn't the trailer, per se. I've been monitoring some of the news articles that have come out about the game the past couple weeks and it's just not encouraging. The characters are young teens in the Japanese version (which doesn't surprise me) and they had to alter some of the outfits for American audiences because they were basically just straps of leather for coverage.
It's not just limited to this game, Japanese culture is extremely sexually repressed and strange, and it just doesn't jive with me anymore. So, even though this looks like it's probably a fun game, I can't in good conscience support this kinda thing anymore. It's just not for me.
@Sevenizz Um, yeah. That totally clears it up.
@Sevenizz Good man, I retract my statement.
