I like art books, anything behind the scenes, patches or stickers, stuff like that definitely soundtracks. My feeling on adding extra content, just put it in the game, make it part of the whole game instead of rape people for more $$$.

I really like steel box editions....I have a few and at least one per gen and console one on PS2, one on XBOX, a couple on 360, a couple on PS3 I don't own a Wii or Wii-U and I don't have any steel boxes for PC but I have quite a few steel boxes when it comes to my movie collection.

IDK though, the Dead Space 2 cutter or the Halo 3 Spartan Helmet or Killzone Helmet are really nice but when the game ends up being well over $150 due to some plastic thing.....that's where I draw the line.

Of course they are. Who else is going to pay $20 more to the developers? For something they would have included in the past. Its a different era now. This is a multi-billion dollar business run by the likes of Kotick. You should be milked and glad for it.

@ACMC85 I'm not so sure that extra $20 goes into the pockets of the developers.

Much of it is weird or of low quality, so it's debatable whether you would really want to display it. You can find lots of statues of all kinds at local stores and online to suit all kinds of tasts, some of which are probably more appealing.

There was never any need to buy Skyrim's collector's edition to get a dragon statue. In my town, there must be half a dozen stores with an assortment of dragon statues for sale. Popular games sometimes have special, quality figurines based on characters in the game, etc., which are produced later.

Even if you want nerdy stuff to display, it makes sense to find something better and more suitable, rather than buy a collector's edition for a game you haven't even played yet and don't really know whether you'll like it.

I agree that collector's editions are mainly junk. They're just not worth the money. If you really wanted a nice statue, you could probably find something better suited to your needs elsewhere. Art books and soundtracks are nice, but I question the usefulness of an art book, and I'd rather buy the sound track later IF I decide I like the game's music.

I strongly disapprove of giving exclusive, in-game content to owners of collectors' editions or pre-orders. Everyone should have equal access to all the content of a game, and it isn't fair to exclude people from having access to that content just because they bought the game later.

I don't consider these things as 'collectibles'. I just see them as neat toys. For example, the skimpy plasma cutter for Dead Space 2, I like to keep it around; it's kind of goofy, but I like it. I don't really do game collection stuff, but I do, do film stuff. I love getting trilogy packages, or the best versions of films, like The Dark Knight Trilogy; Alien: Anthology or Blade Runner: 5 disc complete collector's edition. Things like that I like more than the huge game cases and what have you.

Know what's dumber than collector's editions? Taking a sealed copy of an old game, graded/sealed inside a plastic case and listing it on ebay for $400.

@OmegaGear @scaperat1 Well, if you happen to have one and sell it, that makes you smart. But the whole idea of taking an old game and sealing it inside a case, grading it and never playing it again seems silly to me.

Guild Wars 2 collector's edition had ..... Rytlock statue (really kickass), metal tin with etched map on lid, 5x artistic prints, frame, DVD, making-of book with art....all this makes t very valuable. It's very valued personally and actually better than the junk CE's that Blizzard pushes for their games.

What a dumb piece. Is ANYTHING worth collecting? The answer is yes. It all depends on the goals and intentions of the buyer.

I personally don't buy them myself, but I don't hate on those that do. I understand the collector's mentality.

Not all of them. I paid 250$ for God of War III collctor's edition and it literally had nothing on it, not even an action figure. Just a stupid pandora's box that's made of very cheap materials and inside is the game. so literally speaking, I paid 190$ for a box :). Paid less for Skyrim and it was worth it.

I feel the same way about collector's editions that I feel about achievments - waste of space that adds nothing to the actual game. Put the funds into content instead of trophies IMO.

@floydshayvious I doubt much time or money goes into trophies. They're all so basic to come up with.

I am itching to play Metal Gear Rising. In pain. But I will not spend $150 on a stupid lamp. If I want the soundtrack, then I'll wait until the 28th (the day it's released). I have the MGS HD collection because I love artbooks. If there is no extra game content or behind the scenes extras then I see no reason to buy it.

There are some collectors editions that worth the extra money and some not. This also depends what the buyer likes to get. For me, is very important to get soundtrack and "the making of"; as for the special item, to be useful in someway (even if it's a mouse pad).

For me I love the statues that come with the game. I can them in a room for display at my house showing my love for video games. I see collector editions as a fan service of somewhat, ut I understand is it really worth it. They are when you get DLC before anyone else.

Games from beloved series with strong fanbases and collectors editions that are actually limited are worth it. For example the MGS4 C.E. had a single print run. If you bought it at launch, it was 10 more dollars than buying a regular edition. Now regular editions are standard 10-20 bargain bin fare (it is nearly 5 years old) while a collectors edition will run you 120+ on Ebay and thus has actually increased in value.

For me to buy a collector edition of a game, it has to be a game i feel will be epic before buying it (Diablo3, Halo 4, etc.) To me its just of the fun of first buying a game you feel will be epic even though 3 months down be line you'll forget about it, its fun for that moment around launch for me.

I like behind-the-scenes content because I'm interested in how games get made. Unfortunately there isn't more collector's content like that, possibly because marketing thinks that most people aren't interested in a game's development. Soundtracks are also good.

Atlus is usually good with their collector's edition stuff.

I get them for me, not for resale later or because they are popular. If I like a game enough I just want the extras or display items or art book or whatever it comes with. I could care less whether it's worth anything in the future or not.

What I usually do if I'm going to pre-order one of those Collectors Edition, at Gamestop or Target, I will wait for the reviews/Videos on a game and if it is bad, I ask gamestop to give me my money back and that's how I handle it without being screw after purchase. The one and only Collectors Edition I had was Mass Effect 3 and it was well worth the money.

No because by the time they become worth something, the non collector editions will be fewer and more collectable.

Deus Ex: HR special edition, came with an artbook, soundtrack, BTS videos, and was included with the pre-order for no extra cost. That was awesome, but there is no way I wouldn't pay more for this extra crap.

You shouldn't purchase collector's edition for just any game, only the ones that you truly enjoy should be considered when deciding to buy the regular or collector's edition. Also very few collector's editions will be worth significantly more than the regular edition so choose wisely.

I like collector's edition because I have shelves in my office that I use to pile up the boxes and "trophies" I get. I also have maps that some of the games come with stuck up on my wall. So definitely a gaming room.

Nope.

Most DLC's end up being bundled up and released afterwards as a separate DLC or GOTY edition.

The miniatures or toys are worthless.

I like artbooks, so I buy them off separately, sometimes used, from Amazon like what I did with the ME universe and Diablo 3 artbook.

There are times where you have no choice and it's the only option you have.

Like with Tales of Graces in Europe, I swear I could only find the collectors edition of that game.

it's usually too big a gap between normal and collector's.

the normal game is usually 45

and then the collector's is 150-200 or something.

if it's a game i really like, i might consider buying like a premium version in the 80-100 price range, but any higher than that and it's usually just an overpriced statue and some stuff that'd be in the premium version.

Collector's Editions are exactly that; special editions for the hardcore fans. This is the same with movies and music. I would love to have a real, steel(?) version of the Terminator skull/bust in my media room. This because I am a huge fan of the Terminator-movies (1 and 2). I think it would look cool on top of my shelf. These are something other that "action figures" - these are limited editions especially for the hardcore fans that want to (perhaps) show it or find these things fascinating. I wouldn't mind having a highly detailed figure/minature statue(?) of the first colossus you encounter in "Shadow of the Colossus". I actually thought the Dead Island Riptid-bust looked like a unique piece of Collector's item. This is, however, only my opinion. I take pride in my huge selection of Collector's Edition movies and games.

Wasted enough money on stupid things like this as a kid / teen to know that it brings me no lasting enjoyment.

The money you spend on 2-3 CE could have gotten you 7-8 games. I would rather have 7 games than 2 games and 2 plastic statues.
