haha 999 dollars for a pc that you could build yourself for 2-300 dollars. but sure it is small and looks cute ;)

A $1000.00!! And then theres the cheaper model for $500.00 - if it is all down to a licensing issue, a 50% increase in price is ridiculous! Especially considering we're talking about an OS whose kernel hasn't changed significantly since Windows 95 and still requires a gargantuan amount of hardware just to get it to run effectively. I do believe that these small PC's and digital downloads are the way to go, but when you talk about PC's youre talking about devices are synonymous of modifying, backwards compatablity and so on. We're talking about building machines like muscles cars for great savings and getting massive power out of them. $1000.00 for a tiny box that I cannot go out and buy parts freely to upgrade it constantly seems like buying a German car that doesnt come with carpets as standard. and what happens if this whole investment and push by both companies doesnt stand the test of time? what are we going to do with kit thats dead?
DVD will be gone in a matter of years. HD space is cheap and once SSD space becomes cheaper DVD will be gone. Good for steam and their very forward thinking model.

Uh . . . . about 80% of the computers out there. Which is why games still come on DVD..
@Born_Lucky ummm you do realize that steam sell games which are all DOWNLOAD only so obviously if they do make a console or a 'steambox' all the games would be acquired via steam for DOWNLOAD
@Born_Lucky I haven't used my DVD-drive since the last time I reinstalled windows 7. All my games I buy online and all my drivers i download online to make sure I get the latest updated driver.
@Born_Lucky Havn't seen minecraft on DVD before. Digital download is the way is all going. HD space is cheap and once SSD is larger DVD will die...
i don;t believe in this stuff, no DVD rom drive, only usb drives, the cooling by longer gaming is not enough, no point making a small computer when you still need big hardware like a keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor that are big in comparison. This PC is not Handheld and you will still be stationary unless you take all the other stuff i mentioned above with you. This is in my opinion a misstep. They should concentrate on making desktops and/or tablets more powerfull and acessible for gamers if we are a objective group of people for them.

Who uses a DVD drive anymore? I think the whole point of the steam 'big picture mode' is that you don't need the clunky mouse and keyboard setup. You can access all your games with a controller, or if you choose, mouse and keyboard.
The components draw at most 40W total. A helicopter-loud cooling solution is not necessary.
What's really cool about this device, is that you get to choose which peripherals and devices are required. And Xi3 claims the X7a can run Crysis 2. These are sexy devices. If they can get the price point down, they'll print their own money.
@placksheep @Mar_Sama i do understand but the internet distribution is not the only one. Remember, games, programs and other software in shops are still buyable on CD/DVD/Blueray Disc so the era of CD's is long not over, i understand that you can download all the stuff but if your internet connection is not fast it takes a long time to download. Besides not all people are so open to pay per internet and like to buy things with cash. Well if the shops do provide a download p2p option than it is great and i will not have any arguements, but unless this happens, there is a lot to look for to make the enviroment ready for small PC's that don't require ROM drives, Internet Drives and such. Oh and i forgot if you make a HD Formatation you need the drivers that after the Format are no longer on the Drive
