I remember a prototype being reviewed at a CES a year or two ago. It was like a seeing an 80 inch screen at ten feet and supposedly it wouldn't stay on your head without you having to hold it in place. Same horror demo as well. I think I'm looking forward to the oculus rift much seeing as it it encompasses your entire field of view.

Japanese scientists discuss the future of augmented reality on the PlayStation 3.
I know the first VRs will have crazy movement lag, glitch, etc.... Like the kinect. But when it evolves, players will have more control on vision. Like for example, in multiplayer shooting games, players right now are limited to a rectangle box and mouse/analog stick to look around. with VR helmet and game controller, players can quickly turn around, look right, down, up, diagonal right up, semi diagonal right up, etc... with crazy precision; while controlling the walking direction/movement using a game controll. How intuitive would that be.
OR
Play skyrim, looking around for loots and exploring would be alot of fun.
Oculus Rift is already addressing the latency issue. That's kind of the whole point of it.
@zpluffy I turn my avatar ten times with mouse before you move your neck. You´d be dead 3 times by then.
Your missing my point are you?
" How intuitive would that be."
Being able to dive inside the game would be crazy awesome. Example, Battlefield 3, You turn left and it would correspond to the way you interact real life. It's like being in a different dimension. Not only that, since there are no distractions, you will hear the game audio, causing you to even enter the game. Not only shooting games, Exploring games as well. Explore skyrim like your looing from the characters eyes. Explore Hyrule to see the gorgeos environment, exploring it like you explore in real life. Look around find some loots. It would be very intuitive and fun.
Unless ofcourse, you define fun and intuitiveness as being able to turn around FAST and crazy dominate online. Being competitive ANd be the best in the game rounds, then that's your thing.
OMG...that headset looks so awesome...damn you sony fans.. you guys get all the great experiences :(
OH MY FUCKING SWEET LORD IN SKYLOFT COULD YOU IMAGINE PLAYING ZELDA AND BE IIIIIINNNNN HYRULE LIKE WOW BRO WOW MY NOGGINS SHOT OFF ON DIS ONE YOOOOO
When this tech come out in next-gen consoles, it would be expensive, let alone the Personal 3D Viewer that Sony has brought it has around $800 price tag. I think this tech would be available around 2020 to be more wallet-friendly.
@yohansetiawan Sony loose money on every consoles during launches , they usualy make cash off games not consoles. so even if those Virtual goggles cost a lot to make, they wont mind loosing abit of cash on it , if they can make more on games
Would be good if they introduced this device to some games within the next generation of consoles, imagine playing a FPS or Elder Scrolls game and you could nod yes or no and look around you 180 degrees, it would be the next step virtually from 3D gaming.
I guess not...it would be like if you are sitting where the actors are acting or like if the actors where brought to act infront of you
i woudl be interested in buying this in the future if it came at a reasonable price! :)
@RatedRranger and the only thing that was original about carmack's idea was that each eye would be viewing a different angle of the same image to simulate depth..which isn't really anything original..just nobody mentioned it in the news much
Not only is it not original, it's not his idea, nor is it his project. Occulus Rift is the creation of a guy named Palmer Luckey. Carmack was just promoting the development of it because it interests him and he wants developers to support it.
By the way, having a different view for each eye is how every 3D effect ever made works, including the old stereoscopes from over a hundred years ago.
@Ravenlore_basic i don't like fishing either. yeah, i'd have to agree with your definition of entertainment fun. fishing fun people would NEVER play video games.
If it has a good price not like 9999 euro then i am interested, i think it's about time they make something that change the way you experience the game not those move and kinect crap it's easier to fool the mind with this kind of approach and so your experience becomes awesome, horror games anyone 0_0....
Playing games on a tv or a monitor is good enough for me.This shit looks like technology overload imo.
Technology must evovle and whether you admit it or not you surely liked the idea of VR gaming when you were a kid no game loving person can deny that...
@UsernameofDoom Good point. I'm just saying sometimes we can dive too far into technology and the way things are evolving makes it seem like simplicity is bad. As a kid, this is kick ass but as an adult, I'm comfortable playing the old school way on a tv or monitor.
I know this is coming from left field, but these 2 dudes look like extras in a kung fu flick, one of those restaurant scenes where someone gets their ass kicked by the dumpsters.
@HipHopBeatsThe guy on the left, for sure. The guy on the right looks something like a mini boss if he gained some weight. He has the grey hair thus some sort of experience but he would still get his ass kicked by the main good guy.
@tightwad34 Lol, you're right. I can definitely see the guy on the right as some sort of mini boss taunting you firing projectiles while fighting off goons guarding him.
If they really are planning on making this work for the PS3 then that means to me that the PS4 is a ways off. That's fine by me. I can wait. If I was 17, maybe not so much.
Honestly I'm really disappointed that this is "new" Technology, I thought for sure 15 years ago that we would be wearing VR like head gear by 2010, Lawnmower man anyone?
i agreed _Lawnmower Man had an awesome demo of what this type of tech could do...but too bad it couldn't materialized...
@DemannameD I thought I was the only one that saw that movie!! That movie is what has made me what VR since I was a kid. This really looks similar to what the Lawnmower Man was shooting for. I too thought we'd be there by now. I think it's just too expensive to invest any real world applications in. I believe that if the really did go after making it a reality (no pun intended ) then we'd see the advancements needed to really make it an enjoyable experience. Much the same way that console gaming is now leaps and bounds away from what it was in the Atari or even NES days. If they'd have put that much time and effort into VR over the last 20 years, we would have it. But great call with the movie ref.
I know what you mean but that tech was never developed, I played vr like 12 yeas ago but it was rubbish, not enough money went behind. It's an old idea but still a good one.
VR always brings excitement ,welcoming that topic for sure, we all know that soon enough this type of thing is awaiting for us probably in much broader version as in holodecks and other similar stuff to fully extend gaming experience beyond just a raw touch to controller plastic buttons....
If you think about it, all we would need Right Now to have a pretty decent VR experience would be a headset with surround sound and a functional visor screen. Then we can just keep the controls for now and plug the headset into a console.
Interesting, I wonder though how long we would keep fooling ourselves into wondering if it is or is not reality? ... In addition, how far will people go to get that first sensation that they get? Play on little sleep, a drink or two.. or more, a little Marijuana, some LSD... after the high of or first taste goes away what will people do to get it back, that is if they liked the feeling in the first place.
@Ravenlore_basic What the hell are you talking about? lol It's just a VR headset, it's not going to create another dimension or anything. People will know when they put it on, so they'll know when it's not reality anymore. And I have no idea why you brought drugs into the equation, but you've obviously never tried them so I can see why you would experience confusion there.
You sound like you have experienced drugs yourself and if you admit that then I should report you to the police for public declaring of dealing with drugs on a non age-restricting site :P
