A nice action game for the weekend!

User Rating: 7.5 | Van Helsing PS2
Van Helsing is an action game in the veins of the Devil May Cry franchise. You get to shot and punch stuff from room to room with a fixed camera. Enemies drops little orbs that acts as cash that you can redeem for certain moves or upgrades between missions. The game follows the movie so if you have watched the movie, the story will make somewhat more sense. The graphics are decent. They are not spectacular but they are not gross either. The in-game graphic engine is used for the cut-scenes and there's a couple of times i noticed clippings in the character models. The game can take a dip in framerates when there's a lot of goons on screen, but it never really affected the gameplay. The sound is good. As far as I know none of the actors from the movies did the voice-overs but they sound pretty similar. The weapons all show good and the music is somewhat low-key but picks up when there's a big fight.

The controls are what would make or break this type of game and I'm happy to say that they were very good. Helsing is easy to navigate, the jumping was easy. Switching weapons was a breeze. There's an auto-lock and you can roll to evade attacks. You can use a grapple-hook to climb to areas which are too high to jump.

This is a short game. It took me probably 5 hrs to go thru the whole 12 missions. This game is a rental only because of that.
