Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines Question

how do I get around the lack of available memory?

every time I try to start the game it tells me there is less than 15mb of memory available, and then shuts down.
I'm running vista, and have tried ending the processes I feel safe ending...
also, the "big brother" program is turned off.

Oh! the game is Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines

This seems to be a symptom of any computer that has 4GB of RAM or more, especially 64-bit systems (both apply to me and I'm playing through the game). The easy fix is to download Wesp's unofficial patch at http://www.patches-scrolls.de/vampire_bloodlines.php and install the basic version (the plus version works too, but adds a whole bunch of stuff to the game as well - whether that's preferable or not is a matter of opinion). Alternatively you can take a hex editor to a couple of files, look around on the steam VTMB forums for instructions on that.
