My Friends

29Apr 06
On the occasion of my review of Eternal Darkness taking over the top spot as users' least recommended review of mine, I am going to give a first entry to this blog.

What is it that people feel the need to recommended or disapprove of a review based on score? I find it interesting how a review of four lines can be summarized into "OMGzorz this game suckxz" or "best evarrrrr!!11" and be recommended across the board for its 1.0 or 10.0 score.

Anyway, that was just venting -- I'm more concerned about what it is that entertains people. I've noticed over the last while that I'm coming in at enjoyment below what most people have found.

In the last year, I've finished The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, and Castlevania DS. All of which got glowing reviews of which I, as you can see by my reviews, at least somewhat disapprove.

But regardless of whether I disapprove or not, I always finish the game before I review it and cover everything I feel the reader should know about the game to tell whether he/she should be interested in the game. I can give my interpretation, as I am expected to do, but I cannot alter facts about the title.

The only thing I will not disclose in a review is information about the story (or at least, only very minimally when it doesn't matter). There is no reason for you to hear about surprises in a game. This also somewhat applies to enemies, as I don't want to disclose things that should appear unexpectedly.

No matter what, I am going to write a full review, detailing what is good about the title and what was missing in the aspects of Graphics, Controls, Variety, Replay Value, Audio, and Depth of Gameplay.

So, I'm here asking two questions:

  1. What does a game have to do for you to say "This is definitely a AAA title"?

  2. What is it about Castlevania DS, Eternal Darkness, and Warrior Within that I am missing?

To clarify question 2,
-Castlevania is short, combat limited and difficulty is lacking -- Agree/Disagree and why.

-Eternal Darkness has repetitious environments, enemies, and combat strategies -- Agree/Disagree and why.

-Warrior Within has unclear direction, unclear visuals, a horrible map, no story on its own, and is buggy and needlessly graphic -- Agree/Disagree and why.

If you agree with my points, then it doesn't really matter what score I find appropriate for the game as my points stand on their own. The score is merely a linear interpretation of enjoyment.
