waltmor's Journal

  • 29Dec 08

Hello everyone, I thought I'd post the following PM I received from jkatj and the response I sent. I should've explained this earlier but if you all could help to get the word out I'd appreciate it.

"Hi waltmor, Sorry to bother you, but I have a question that I think you might be able to help me with. Lately, I've been noticing in addition to forums for shows with names like "Official Episode Discussion: [episode name]" there are sometimes show forums set up titled "Homepage Discussion: [episode name]." I've been wondering what different purpose the two are meant to have. While searching around trying to find an answer, I noticed that you started all the "Homepage Discussion" forums that I can find right now (for example in forums for "The Unit," "30 Rock," "CSI"). Could you fill me in on what should be discussed under "Homepage Discussion" vs. "Official Episode Discussion"? I appreciate your help"

The difference is that I'm trying to keep comments made on the homepage in the main feature block out of the official episode discussions. I have to associate a forum topic to each of the main homepage headlines now in order to accommodate the comments that are made. And I'd rather keep them outside the official discussion threads because they're shorter and much more casual than the entries in the official threads. Does that make sense?

If anyone has a better suggestion for what to title each of these new threads please let me know. I settled on "Homepage Discussion" because I thought that might be self-explanatory but if that's not working so well I can adjust it.

The first Beatles episode was interesting, mainly because Brooke's "Let It Be" had me clapping at the end. I thought it was a magical performance. The second Beatles night... some terrific performaces but a big overdose on the songbook.

My songbook pick for this season: Prince.

And I cringe at the songs they might make them sing as the season progresses. cla$$ic country, the American Songbook, cla$$ic soul, cla$$ic rock, etc. I would make the cutoff date the 80s. No songs older than the 80s! If we must go older keep it to one night of "Singing the cla$$ics!" and let them pick whatever $tyle they like. I want to see them really connect with the songs. I don't want to listen to them like they're running through the motions.

Some of last night's performances were way off but now that I think about it maybe that's fine. Jason was super kooky, and Ramiele worked the white hat. Brooke played the sunny card too heavily though and was boring and Simon was onto it. David Cook played the smug rock star too heavily and was predictable and Simon was onto it. But the judges were way off on some: Chikezie and Michael were far better than given credit, while David was in good voice but didn't really connect but the judges still loved it. The second half of Chikezie's performace was full of life. Michael tackled a tough song and pulled it off for the most part. And I loved Syesha's performance!

I'm busy today and tomorrow putting the finishing touches on TV.com's programming for our holiday break. As you may or may not know all of CNET closes down over Christmas and New Year's Day. We'll all be back Wednesday, January 2nd. I'm headed to Istanbul, Turkey for 10 days so I probably won't be checking in on anything work related. I'll be too distracted by the Aya Sofya, Blue Mosque, and Grand Bazaar, not to mention the food, people... I'm sure I'll watch a little tv though while I'm there.

I'm trying to keep the homepage as fresh looking as I can during that time but you'll probably notice a focus on the Top 20 or 40 shows. In addition to all the great community generated stuff, we have many updated photo galleries that are worth checking out. I'm finding a lot of new pictures that I'd never seen before. I'll also be pointing to a number of your recaps and episode guides. So anyway... Happy Holidays everyone! Thanks for everything you've done to make our site what it is. Here's to 2008!

I love Nip/Tuck and have enjoyed this new season a lot. Their move to L.A. is proving to be such a goldmine for great new material! And now that Julia, Matt, and Kimber are back in the picture.... I love how Julia stuck it to Christian, and then that last scene with Matt and Kimber - !!! And Olivia's daughter looks like she'll be playing this season's villain. She's so creepy!

I don't really have anything against Prison Break but I can't figure out why it still ranks as one of our top shows. It's been #1 again for two days in a row now. The program's not doing that well in the ratings, and plotwise it seems like it's rehashing Season One. Is it just because Wentworth and Dominic are so dreamy and we can't get enough of them? Or is it that our readers just like serial dramas a whole lot?

I've been watching a lot of new shows. I've liked some, not liked others, been lukewarm to a bunch.Life seems pretty cool; I'll definintely keep checking it out. Bionic Woman has potential. The Big Bang Theory will survive because its cast is good and the two leads have recreated Frasier and Niles. Pushing Daisies, Private Practice, and Carpoolers are all so ABC. You know what I mean. Dirty Sexy Money (I mean Big Shots.. thanks archangelcory16 for pointing that out. ABC's new shows all seem the same to me.. ) is Desperate Housewives with dudes. Cavemen could turn out to be a funny comedy - the actors in it are good. Journeyman seemed interesting, first episode. Reaper first episode was funny I thought.

My absolute favorite show right now though is Damages! Haven't missed an episode yet and watch it every Tuesday 10pm sharp. No putting it off until the next night.

I mean America's Got Talent, On the Lot, and Pirate Master are finally ending. What clearer signals do we need?

I spend so much time looking at TV.com's homepage and thinking about it that it's hard to pull myself out of it sometimes. This occasionally results in me thinking of one thing and typing another - like my inclusion of Stan Marsh in this week's Father's Day poll instead of Randy Marsh. I pick artwork for the topslots and make almost all of the smaller images and choose a great deal of what to feature. You'll notice that many of the smaller images/headlines (what we call "gumballs") seem to be randomly generated but there's a method to that madness too. Most recently I put in new call-outs for The 4400, Kyle XY, perennial favorite Lost, One Tree Hill, MP3, and FilmSpot. I can see pretty quickly how well anything is doing and make adjustments accordingly. Depending on how many news stories we have in a day you'll see prominent links to those as well. Am I missing anything that stands out as a glaring admission to you? Does anyone read Yahoo! TV and think we should be more like them (well it ain't gonna happen! ). Is there anyone who's never clicked on a topslot (and why's that)? It's been a while since I pulled any blogs to the surface. I'm not looking for redesign ideas - just thoughts on what you'd like to see within the framework of what's up there now.

Awesome news! I love 30 Rock and kept hoping that it would be renewed.

    From NBC's official press release:

"BURBANK, Calif. - April 4, 2007 - NBC will renew its critically
acclaimed comedy "30 Rock" (returning to the network's lineup on
    Thursday, April 5, with a special supersized episode at 8:40 p.m. -
9:20 p.m. ET for the 2007-08 season, it was announced today by Kevin
Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment. The series will settle into its
new time period of 9:00 - 9:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, April 12 for the
    remaining episodes.

"From the beginning, '30 Rock' has proven to be the kind of quality
comedy that doesn't come around very often, and we are very pleased to
have this show back for a second season," said Reilly. "We expect it to
continue to build its increasingly loyal audience and become another of
    NBC's...comedy series."

The freshman comedy has earned critical plaudits since its premiere
last October while Alec Baldwin, one of the series stars, won Golden
Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards for his spot-on performance as
Jack Donaghy, a brash network executive. In addition, "30 Rock" has
received extensive praise from the nation's television critics -
including magazines such as TV Guide, Entertainment Weekly and People,
that have included the comedy on many of their "Top 10" lists of
    favorite series for 2006-07.

Season to date, "30 Rock" is averaging a 2.7 rating, 7 share in
adults 18-49 and 5.8 million viewers overall. With its most recent
    regular-slot telecast on March 8, "30 Rock" delivered a best-yet 89
percent retention of its 18-49 lead-in from "Scrubs" and with its six
most recent regular-slot editions, "30 Rock" has retained more than 80
percent of its lead-in from "Scrubs." "30 Rock" is also one of the most
upscale comedies on television, rating 28 percent higher among adults
18-49 living in homes with $100,000-plus incomes than it rates among
    all adults 18-49."

I made it through last season despite the controversy and I'm glad I did - it turned out to be one of the best seasons yet. But as much as I still enjoy Survivor I don't think I'm ready yet to start all over again. My Thursday routine is full - The Office, 30 Rock, Grey's Anatomy, Nashville Star, and usually Dirt from the night before. I can't handle anymore and sometimes I can't even handle that much. But that Survivor opener is still on the ol' Tivo - might get sucked into it yet. *sigh*

Speaking of 30 Rock - last night's episode was one of the best so far. I had to watch the opener twice. Tina Fey & Alec Baldwin play off each so well. And the Ugly Betty punchline...! Too good.

Then there's my Saturday morning matinee routine - I'm thinking either Dreamgirls or The Good Shepherd for tomorrow. Decisions decisions..

A slightly funny show. Two couples - one new, one experienced - with their single sleazy friend. Sounds familiar. One of the actresses was doing this weird Helen Hunt imitation the entire time. David Spade got a few decent lines in. I'd be curious to see the 4th or 5th episode, maybe the show will get its footing by then. In the meantime I'll just stick with Two and a Half Men.

Burton's performance in last Thursday's Grey's episode "Wishin' and Hopin'," in which she awakens briefly from Alzeimer's, supplied some of best and most powerful scenes yet in the series. Her appearances as Meredith's mother Ellis are always excellent, but this time around we got to see her actually speak not only to Meredith but to Cristina and Richard. This brought out what was probably Ellen Pompeo's best acting yet as well, when she reacted angrily to her mother's criticisms. Finally, a little fire from Meredith! But her interactions with Cristina stole the show I think. I loved how she sized up Cristina in one fell swoop and quickly identified with her as an equal.

But oh so fun to watch! They're starting to wear on me though - I'm looking forward to the Hollywood showdowns already. The Simon/Paula/Randy trio is one of the funniest comedy teams on tv. These pros don't miss a beat - one razes the self-absorbed, oblivious non-talent and the other two let him or her down gently, all with an air of professionalism and politeness. Only occasionally do they toss their manners aside and resort to viciousness. Simon's often cruel but when so he's almost always on target. He also seems to like blondes but so what. Then there's Ryan - an absolute pro with his dry, funny wit, who does a terrific job of slyly egging on the doofuses without them knowing, but genuinely consoling in all the right places. Can't wait for the Hollywood competitions!

Happy New Year everyone! I think we've all finally adjusted to being back to work here after our holiday break. I know last week felt like a looooong week and we were only here four days. But there are so many big tv shows returning that things are almost back in full swing.

Has anyone watched Dirt? I try never to judge a program by its first episode alone, I think too many shows get dismissed that way. Dirt showed some promise even as it was a little awkward in laying out all its different characters and storylines. I'll be tuning the next couple weeks to see how does.

It's getting late this Wednesday evening and I still have a few things to program for tomorrow. Such is the life of working for a web site, your work is never ever close to being finished. But I need to wrap it up soon - I've got to start in on my pie crusts for tomorrow. I've been assigned the apple pies and can't wait to get to baking. I'll get in some time to lay around on Thanksgiving but probably not toooo much. At least until I get to my friends' house to start eating and drinking. I'm sure before long we'll all being laying out unable to eat another bite. So have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone! See you out shopping on Friday ha ha !

Last night's premiere of Freakshow was hilarious! I had no idea this cartoon would be so funny, and hadn't even planned on watching it really but got pulled in after South Park. I admit I didn't know that much about it going into it, but after a while I thought I started recognizing voices. But the perverse humor was sharp and witty. Can't believe they have a character called Burly Bear. Guess the bears are totally out of the closet now.

I'll bet when Monday's 10pm regular Medium returns it's going to be a much better fit with Heroes (though by that time Heroes might be done with its season).

NBC needs to find a better night and/or timeslot for Studio 60. I think it'd be a better fit following Friday Night Lights on Tuesdays at 9pm. Get rid of Wednesday's The Biggest Loser and move one of the Law & Orders to Wednesday night.

But for the third week in a row I've read in the news that Studio 60 loses
a big chunk of its audience from 10:30pm to 11:00pm. CSI: Miami doesn't
    suffer the same audience erosion.

What if NBC turned Studio 60 into a half-hour drama and paired it with 30 Rock or Twenty Good Years? (Neither of which I've seen but I'll bet one of them gets The Axe...)

I just don't want to see Studio 60 cancelled, I like it way too much.

Who'da thunk that NBC would make 3 new shows that I'd like so much? But after 2 episodes of Studio 60 and the pilots for Heroes & Friday Night Lights I am totally hooked.

I was a huge fan of the Friday Night movie and am so happy to see that the series is trying to capture that same sense of drama and understatement. You can preview it right now on NBC's site, or you can wait until this Tuesday to catch it. I highly recommend it.

Heroes is already hugely popular with our users (it's currently at #5) and judging from the pilot it's going to be an engrossing, must-watch program. I'm definitely tuning in next week.

Studio 60 I can't say enough good things about. Love every aspect of it and it's got me laughing throughout. I'm a huge fan of funny shows that don't have laugh tracks. There aren't enough of them.

Come on NBC, don't even think of cancelling any one of these shows!
