26Mar 08Apparently this is the 'in' thing right now. I've been tagged twice now, once by NeonNinja and once by Gigastormz. Glad to see people care!

1. I'm a fan of the Usagi Yojimbo comic and have the entire run with the exception of some of the recent issues. I have met the creator, Stan Sakai, at the Mid-Ohio-Con once in 1998 and once in 2000. Each time I bought an original sketch and have had them framed. Now you know where my screen name comes from if you didn't already.
2. Been a big fan of J-rock music for a few years now. My favorite band is Dir en grey and I have all of their albums. The only song of theirs in their entire catalog that I don't like at all is Deity from the Macabre album, otherwise, I like pretty much everything else and I find that the more I listen to their songs the more I like them. They have a way of growing on you even when the first impression isn't very good.
3. I used to be big into skiing, but since none of my friends are interested in doing it, I gradually lost interest since skiing alone can be boring.
4. I played Magic: the Gathering for about eight years up until last year. At one point I owned eight of the 'Power 9' and probably had about $2000+ invested into a single deck. It was a deck that could win on turn 1 about 65% of the time and turn 2 100% of the time. Brutality in cardboard form!
5. I have played three instruments in my life: violin (1 year), clarinet (1 year), and alto saxophone (7 years).
I'll tag majadamus, Sonic5227, and venus577 and hope they haven't been tagged yet.
Expect a blog on a particularly terrible game for PS1 coming up soon!

15Mar 08These are the my top ten games for 2008 that will likely be on fewer people's radars than should be.
The World Ends With You (DS) - Apr. 22
Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer (DS) - Mar. 4
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES (PS2) - Apr. 22
Space Invaders Extreme (DS/PSP) - Jun. 17 [DEMO]
Disgaea 3 (PS3) - Aug. '08
Dark Sector (PS3/X360) - Mar. 25
Bangai-O Spirits (DS) - Q2 '08
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS) - 2008
Umihara Kawase Portable (PSP) - Mar. 27 [DEMO]
Samurai Shodown Anthology (PS2/Wii/PSP) - Q4 '08
海腹川背 -
6Mar 08If you like the idea of echochrome's crazy perspective based puzzles, you can give the demo a try on PSP or PS3. You can get the PSP demo here and if you have a Japanese PSN account set up you can download the PS3 demo from the Japanese PS Store.
無限回廊 -
25Feb 08The best RPG in years, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is confirmed to be getting the expansion FES this April 22nd! Yay!

28Jan 08While the last few months I chronicled my Famicom acquisitions, I haven't updated with my other purchases. Here are the purchases made from November up through this month:

Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth (N64)
I have always enjoyed the Star Soldier type of shooter, but the NES game is pretty damn hard. This one may be a little too much on the easy side, but it is still a good game in the series.
Mortal Kombat 4 (N64)
A surprisingly great port especially since the MK Trilogy port on N64 wasn't very good.
Rayman 2: The Great Escape (N64)
Wetrix (N64)
A puzzle game that is equal parts crazy, hard, and unique!
Dragon Warrior I & II (GBC)
The complete first two Dragon Quest games on a single GB cart? Sweet!
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (GBA)
I was surprised to find this new, so I had to pick it up.
ゲームセンターCX: 有野の挑戦状 (DS) [Game Center CX: Arino no Chousenjou]
I recommend this to anyone who loves NES games as the psudo-NES games made for this title are amazing! You can check out my review of this title here.
Magic: the Gathering - Battlemage (PS1)
Gekioh: Shooting King (PS1)
Duke Nukem: Time to Kill (PS1)
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
I already had the Japanese version when I picked this one up. It wasn't a planned purchase, but since the price was about half of what it normally goes for, I decided I'd take it.
Mega Man: Powered Up (PSP)
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (PSP)
This was what I got in trade when I gave Hart704 my copy of Call of Duty 4 (PS3). This particular copy is the same version that came with the special edition PSP from last year complete with alternate cover and is still sealed.
Stuntman Ignition (PS3)
A better game than most give it credit for, if you don't mind music/rhythm games for their trial-and-error gameplay, then you'd probably enjoy this. I got it for $30.
Stranglehold - Collector's Edition (PS3)
Stranglehold was an unplanned purchase when I was at Best Buy to pick up Burnout Paradise. I knew I wanted the PS3's collector's edition because of the included movie, Hard Boiled, but I didn't want to pay full price. Fortunately, I found one last copy available at $40!
NBA Street Homecourt (PS3)
How can I say no to a cool arcade basketball game for only $9? Score!
Burnout Paradise (PS3)
Anyone who claims to be a Burnout fan, but is hating on this game based on the demo needs to do themselves a favor and go out right now and buy Burnout Paradise! Sure, it has minor flaws, but so does your precious Mass Effect and Call of Duty 4 and you have those more than likely. Stop sniveling about your lame reasons for skipping it and get it now!
Suikoden III (PS2)
Rogue Galaxy (PS2)
Frequency (PS2)
Do you love Harmonix for creating Guitar Hero and Rock Band? Then try to take a look at one of their first attempts at a music/rhythm game. I found this new recently even though it was released in 2001 and it is very good!
Hudson JoyCard Famicom controller
Not only do I love the cIassic Famicom styIe of this controller, but it is easily the best controller I have ever used for the NES/Famicom! It may be used and is probably about 20 years old, but it still has top-notch response time and fantastic feeling buttons! The only downside is that it uses the 15-pin auxiliary port on the Famicom, so I'm afraid it is not compatible with the NES.
幻想水滸伝 -
11Jan 08That's right brothers and sisters, I received another shipment from Japan today with 10 more Famicom games! Yay! Get ready for lots of cIassic win! ^_^

Air Fortress
Batman
Dragon Ninja (Bad Dudes)
忍者龍剣伝 (Ninja Ryukenden) (Ninja Gaiden)
忍者龍剣伝II: 暗黒の邪神剣 (Ninja Ryukenden II: Ankoku no Jashinken) (Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos)
高橋名人の冒険島II (Takahashi Meijin no Bouken Jima II) (Adventure Island 2)
ツインビー3: ポコポコ大魔王 (Twinbee 3: Poko Poko Daimou)
Super 魂斗羅 (Super Contra)
Star Force
Super Xevious
I would normally go for many more boxed games, but the place I get them from, JapanGameStock, always has a buy 3, get 1 free deal on the loose carts, so I have a hard time wanting to pick up boxed games even though they are very desirable. Apparently my desire for free games is greater! Star Force and Super Xevious are my first two boxed games because they were relatively cheap as far as boxed Famicom games go.

5Jan 08I love it when people talk about the supposed problems with SFIV as it currently stands as if they are some kind of game developer whiz. I have some news for you: Not only is it still extremely early, but who the hell are you to pass judgment at this point in its development? ScrewAttack did the same stupid thing on their podcast recently too and came off sounding like whiny *******! You'd think these people would be grateful that SFIV is even being made because Capcom didn't want to do it the whole time and possibly still have doubts about it. You people should be kissing Yoshinori Ono's feet for being able to get SFIV off the ground instead of overly criticizing an early build. Also, don't try to compare it to your favorite Street Fighter game of the past because there will certainly be differences and if you expect it to be something it isn't, you're just preventing yourself from potentially liking it and for that you only have yourself to blame.

1Jan 08For the coming of the new year, I'd like to share with you my ten most anticipated games of 2008.
Playstation 3
LittleBigPlanet
Soul Calibur 4
Killzone 2
Tekken 6
Final Fantasy XIII
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Eternal Sonata
PSP
God of War: Chains of Olympus
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Playstation 2
Yakuza 2
This list could easily change later in the year based on if certain games get pushed back to 2009, which I think is a possibility for a few. I tried to keep the list to games that are very certain to arrive this year. As you can see, I have no games on my list for the DS because there really isn't anything that interests me that I know of at the moment for the system. Perhaps I need to check out expected import releases to get a few on there. And yes, there is one PS2 game on there. That system refuses to die!
Before any of you ask, no, I am not an MGS or GTA fan, but that doesn't mean I will ignore their releases. I'm always looking for an excuse for a top-notch series to finally bring me aboard. I'll just have to wait and see if these entries do the trick. Later, peeps!

25Dec 07Game Center CX: Arino no Chousenjou is based on the popular Japanese video game show, Game Center CX. It stars comedian Shinya Arino who tries throughout an episode to complete a video game, typically from the Famicom (NES) and Super Famicom (SNES). Hilarious antics ensue when Arino reacts to his defeats and triumphs over these typically difficult games.
This DS game attempts to recreate the feeling of the 8-bit Nintendo days with eight games that were specifically created for this title. All eight games have multiple influences from existing games.
PRESENTATION: 9.0
Every effort was made to create the Famicom feel with these games and it shows. These games really do look, sound, and feel like games that could have come out back in the 1980s. The whole game is wrapped in a story of sorts that sees you being transported back to the 1980s along with Arino, both of you as kids and being challenged by "Demon Arino" to complete specific tasks in each of these games. It's safe to say that this game's concept is pretty crazy!
SOUND: 8.5
Famicom-esque music and sound effects largely permeate the game as you'd expect and most of it is pretty good, but still short of being truly memorable.
GAMEPLAY: 9.0
Not only did the developers get the feel right, but the gameplay is also spot on with actual 8-bit Nintendo games and the games are largely very fun. The main mode is where you will be tackling the challenges Demon Arino gives you. Each game has four challenges that must be done in the order assigned and once they are completed the next game will be unlocked and the current game completed will be able to be played outside of the main mode in its entirety, complete with high score boards. The challenges mostly consist of goals like 'Clear stage 5' in Cosmic Gate, 'Score 250,000 points' in Star Prince, and 'Finish course 2 in under 2'28"' in Rally King SP. The game even gives you, at intervals, game magazines of the time with helpful information about the games, cheat codes, and more!
LASTING APPEAL: 8.0
It won't take most people too terribly long to complete the challenges and after that most of the time spent will be trying to best your high scores.
OVERALL: 8.5
You don't need to know anything about the Game Center CX show to enjoy this game. The real requirement to enjoying it is whether or not you are fond of 8-bit Nintendo games. If the answer is yes, then pick this one up!

7Dec 07I'm back this time with eight more Famicom games. They are, from left to right:

Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun (AKA. Kid Dracula)
Datsugoku (AKA. P.O.W.)
Gun-Nac
Guardic Gaiden (AKA. The Guardian Legend)
Heavy Barrel
Kaiketsu Yancha-maru 2 (AKA. Kid Niki 2)
Tetris 2 + BomBliss
Thexder
While Akumajou Special didn't make it to North America on the NES, it did get a sequel on the Game Boy that did. I find the game very endearing with the Castlevania level design and light-hearted remixed music and I recommend that Castlevania fans look for it.
Tetris 2 + BomBliss is great in that it has two-player simultaneous Tetris play and also includes IMO the best Tetris spinoff, BomBliss. Look it up as it is much better than the variants on Tetris DS. Also, don't mistake the 'Tetris 2' part of the title to mean it is like the games we got with that title. The Tetris 2 in the game is simply original Tetris. The Tetris 2 we got (known as Tetris Flash in Japan) not only barely resembles Tetris, but is also lame.
Be sure to check out the following video. It is another match that Hart704 and I recorded of us playing Mortal Kombat Trilogy for N64. Others were uploaded by Hart704 and can be seen on his video page.

1Dec 07Hello all! About a month ago I finally decided I would start collecting for the NES since it was, like many others, the first video game system to have a really big impact on me. I started with the Atari 2600, but I don't really have any desire to collect it. Anyway... I didn't want to simply start collecting for the NES, I also wanted it to have a 'new' feeling to it as well. With that in mind, I decided I would instead collect for:

the Famicom! This way I could still play the games I loved and remember, but also be able to play new experiences that never made it to North America and at the same time satiate my appetite for imports.
As you can see from the picture above I acquired the redesigned AV Famicom from 1993 since it has the aforementioned AV port instead of only RF and interchangeable controllers which the original design did not have since they were hardwired to the system. The only thing that is a slight let down with this redesign is that they didn't stay with the original Famicom's aesthetic which I find cool and unique.
As for games, I ordered four of them with the system. From left to right they are:
アルゴスの戦士 (Argos no Senshi) (AKA. Rygar)
KAGE (AKA. Shadow of the Ninja)
Kaiketsu Yancha-maru (AKA. Kid Niki: Radical Ninja)
Twinbee
Let the 8-bit Nintendo love begin! ^_^
