1Nov 09This past week I got a few more things:

DualShock 3 (Metallic Blue) - This is my first DualShock 3 as I have been playing my PS3 mostly with the original SixAxis controller of which I have two. I have always felt the original was a perfectly good controller, but I just liked the look of this controller in blue so I picked one up. There is also a red one too.
Doom (PS1) - I accidentally found this in the original long box version and had to get it. I had this back in the day when it originally came out and it's a really good port of Ultimate Doom and Doom II on one disc!
Tekken 6 (PS3) - I have been a big fan of Tekken since the original game's release on the original PlayStation and, like always, I picked this one up day one. Unfortunately, my biggest fear came true with this entry: It is too much like the previous Tekken 5. At first this realization really upset me because I have felt the series really needs to do something to freshen itself up since the last iteration. Since then it has grown on me once I came to terms with it being all-too familiar. I still feel Tekken 6 is the best overall game in the series and if you are new to it or haven't played it in a long while, this is certainly a good game to start with/get back into it. (My favorite thing so far was being able to make Law look just like Kenshiro from Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star!)

14Oct 09

As you can see from the above photo, I picked up three of 2009's highest rated games. Toys-R-Us is having a buy-2-get-1-free on all video games and that is how I got them. This sale makes me glad I didn't rush out and buy inFamous or Batman when they came out. Now I have three excellent games to play for a good long while along with my continuation of Ninja Gaiden Σ 2 and the upcoming Tekken 6 at the end of the month! Needless to say, October has been awesome!
Two more older games were also picked up this week:
Power Instinct - This is an Atlus fighting game ported from the arcade to the Super Nintendo. Very obviously Street Fighter II inspired, but still pretty good nonetheless. The later games in the series, especially Matrimelee for Neo Geo, were a good deal better than this one.
WWF Smackdown! 2: Know Your Role - In what can really be considered more of an upgrade rather than a sequel, Smackdown! 2 is a very good follow-up to the original PlayStation Smackdown! wrestling game, a game that changed how wrestling games have been made since.
Thexder NEO - This is a downloadable game for PSP that is a new game in the Thexder series of games that were mainly on different PCs back in the 1980s. The only other one I have played before this one was the port of the original Thexder to the Famicom. It's a pretty bad port, but the concept was interesting enough that I wanted to try out this new one once I saw some gameplay footage and I wasn't disappointed. It is a good game that stays very true to the original games while still being fun today and it even has online multiplayer, but I haven't been able to try that out yet because it seems that absolutely nobody is playing this online. Thexder NEO is $10 and for that price it isn't really worth it, but if the price ever drops to $5, I would recommend it.
---
I finished Ninja Gaiden Σ 2 yesterday and unlike most games, I actually want to play though it again already which I would say is a testament to my enjoyment of it. The camera was definitely a pain at times, but overall still a great game that I recommend to anyone that is into the Ninja Gaiden series and even to people who have been intimidated by the difficulty in the past as this one is definitely far more accessible than previous games. Also, I'm looking for anyone who would like to play some co-op in Ninja Gaiden Σ 2. If you are interested, send me a message on PSN.
Another game I finished recently was one I purchased around the time of my last blog which is L-Dis for PC Engine. It's a pretty good shoot-'em-up with quite a few stages and some satisfying shooting action once you get powered up enough. Late in the game is pretty difficult mainly because there is a lot of crazy obstacle dodging and the bosses take quite a few hits before they go down! L-Dis is a shoot-'em-up I would only recommend to fans of the genre because I don't think most others would like it as much.
---
As always, thanks for reading and until next time! (Psst! Next time: Tekken 6!

2Oct 09Hey peeps, Usagi back to talk some more games so here we go!

Yes, I already bought Ninja Gaiden Σ 2! I didn't expect to do so until I was out and about one day and saw it on sale and thought, yeah, I wanna kick some ass! So far it is definitely much better than when Itagaki was with Team Ninja. Many differences are there that certainly wouldn't be there if he was still in charge. For one, the easy difficulty is actually manageable for non-masochists while still being challenging and the harder difficulties are still there for people who want them. There are also many more checkpoints that completely refill your health and you get back a large chunk of health when you finish a battle instead of having to gain it all back yourself. In other words, it is a much less frustrating, but still plenty challenging experience than before. The dismemberment is still in the game and the enemies will still try to suicide bomb your ass, but it's just much less bloody than before. I, for one, am glad Tecmo is free from Itagaki's ego because now they can and are already releasing more than just DoA and NG with the likes of the action game for PSP called Undead Knights and also the upcoming third-person shooter Quantum Theory for PS3.
Four more PC Engine games this week too!
Dungeon Explorer & Dungeon Explorer II - Excellent action RPG games that are essentially Gauntlet with a fully realized story many different characters to choose to play as, RPG elements, and up to 5-players simultaneously! If that sounds good to you and you have a Wii, download the first DE now! DEII is only on the Virtual Console in Japan, unfortunately.
L-Dis - This is a shump of the cute-'em-up subgenre that is pretty good with some funny things like the sound of 'meow' coming out of certain enemies when you destroy them, at least that's what it sounds like to me.
Fire Pro Wrestling 3: Legend Bout - The Fire Pro series has always been known for being an excellent series of wrestling games where the gameplay is all about timing your button presses rather than mashing them to win grapples and it's a great system that is still great today. If you like pro wrestling games I recommend Fire Pro Returns for PS2 since that is the only one to come over to North America outside of the two GBA games.
Tetris (PSP Minis) - I bought the new PSP Minis version of Tetris and I think it is an excellent game of Tetris. It offers 15 neat variants of the game in addition to the usual marathon mode. It even has it's own achievements that are fun as well. The game is $10 which is definitely too much, but I would recommend it if there is a price drop in the future.

24Sep 09I'm back this time powered up with 12 new games that are actually old games. What can I say? I'm going classic gaming cRaZy!!!

First up is the Gate of Thunder 4-in-1 CD that originally came packed with the North American Turbo Duo in 1993. As you can see, Gate of Thunder, Bonk's Adventure, and Bonk's Revenge are on the disc. The first Bomberman release for the system is also on there, accessible with a code. Only Gate of Thunder is a CD game on the disc because the rest were originally released as separate HuCard releases and thrown on here as a bonus. Getting this CD was a great savings because separately those 4 games would cost a total of ~$90 instead of the $28 I paid.
Next up we have a strangely named fighting game that has an arcade only sequel. I'm looking to put up some game footage soon for it to give an idea of what it is like. I think it's a pretty solid fighter with an interesting dual super meter that has an 'offense' part and a 'defense' part. When they both are full, they combine to give you the ability to do a Critical Art as opposed to an Offense Art or Defense Art.
These three Game Boy games were bought from eStarland.com because of a recent Buy 2 used, Get 1 used free promotion. I had Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge when it was originally released in 1991. It was great then and is still a great Castlevania game now unlike the other Castlevania games on Game Boy. Operation C was one I also played at the time, but never owned and it too is a fantastic portable game. Street Fighter Alpha for Game Boy is an interesting game in that it is actually a very good port of the arcade game. The music is the worst part because it grates on you with how annoying it sounds. Very impressive animation and gameplay which is surprising considering we are talking about a 6-button game being pared down to only 2 buttons. The AI is also exactly like the arcade version for the most part. Overall, Street Fighter Alpha on Game Boy is easily the best fighter for the system and a good fighter in and of itself.
I was out earlier this week and happened to stop by a local place called Buybacks that sells used games as well as other things like used VHS tapes, DVDs, music CDs, and Blu-ray movies. I wasn't expecting to find anything I'd want, but I lucked out and found a copy of Vampire Night. It was never on my want list, but I knew about it and it always sounded like a fun light gun game with a vampire theme, so I decided to pick it up. Turns out that it is pretty good and was developed by the same Sega team that developed other great light gun games like Virtua Cop and House of the Dead! I also found a copy of Loaded and a long box version no less! Loaded is one of my favorite early PS1 games so I'm glad I found it.
My final shipment of PC Engine stuff for now arrived too. Two more controllers, mainly for Bomberman matches and Dungeon Explorer co-op (which I will get sometime). The green one with orange accents originally shipped with the PC Engine CoreGrafx II and the weirdly shaped (I usually call it the batwing) black one with blue accents originally shipped with the PC Engine Shuttle.
Speaking of Bomberman, I also got Bomberman '93 which is one of the best games in the franchise and also Mr. Heli no Daibouken. Mr. Heli is an interesting, somewhat unique take on the cute-'em-up sub-genre of shmups.

11Sep 09That title was the slogan for the Turbografx-16, but I thought I'd use it for this blog anyway.
Here is my new console that I alluded to at the end of my last blog:
PC Engine Duo-R
Check out my unboxing of the system here!
This particular version of the PC Engine was released six years after the system was initially released in 1993 and is mainly a color change from the original Duo from 1991. I have had my original Turbografx-16 for 17 years and never had more than the seven HuCard games bought around the time it was acquired. All this time I wanted to get into the system completely and explore more of the HuCard games as well as the CD games too and now I finally can! If anyone is interested in more information on the history of the PC Engine/Turbografx-16, I highly recommend checking out the Wikipedia article.
These are my first two games for the system: Valis III and Winds of Thunder. The Valis series are fairly decent action games and the third one is also on the Genesis and Turbografx-16 too. Winds of Thunder is known as Lords of Thunder outside of Japan and is an excellent side-scrolling shmup with a fantastic hair-metal soundtrack. It was also released on Sega CD, Turbografx-16, and the Virtual Console on Wii. I highly recommend Winds/Lords of Thunder if you like shmups. Check out my video of the game linked in the first sentence of this paragraph.
I will get up some footage of Valis III soon as well as future PC Engine games I get. Thanks for reading!

8Sep 09More pickups since my last blog:

Resident Evil - This is the original long box PlayStation version that I had when it originally came out in 1996. I remember walking into a now defunct local game shop and seeing this demoing on one of their TVs and I gave it a try and really liked what I played so I bought a copy of RE on the spot. Since then I haven't kept up with the series much, only getting RE2 and RE4 since.
Wipeout 64 - I have always enjoyed the Wipeout series, but never was able to try out the N64 iteration of the series. I think this particular game in the series is pretty good and gets a bit too much hate. It is one of the few games for the N64 where I don't feel the analog stick is more of a hindrance than a help. A good entry that was bested by the PS1 Wipeouts, but still worth playing.
Super Bomberman 2 - I have never owned a Bomberman game before this one even though I've always enjoyed them when I rented them. They are always great multiplayer fun! I plan on picking up more in the future.
Sled Storm - I picked this one up and it is a surprisingly good game! It has a little too much of the kind of crap music and "extremeness" from around the time of it's release in 1999, but still worth playing anyway.
Capcom Fighter Power Stick - I like having at least one good arcade style joystick for each system I play shoot-'em-ups on since it helps me play better. I found this one at a local game store complete and in mint condition except for the outer box which is extremely worn and abused. This stick works really great and has parts that are clearly based on Japanese arcade cabs (short throw joystick w/ square gate and convex buttons), like most sticks that come out now, just with cheaper parts. As you can see in the picture it has two cables, one for NES and one for SNES! This will probably replace my NES Advantage since it is a much better stick.
---
Ape Escape 3 (PS2)
Last game I finished was Ape Escape 3. This was my first Ape Escape game and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. My favorite thing was definitely the transformations like a knight, a ninja, a form with a genie that accompanies you, and others. The game has a lot of variety because of the transformations and many gadgets you can use so you likely won't get bored playing the game. The monkeys you capture are humorous too. My main problem with the game was a big lack of challenge, but it was still fun regardless. After reading reviews for the other main entries in the series I doubt I will pick another one up because I got the impression they were all very similar to one another, but I do recommend AE3 to anyone who wants a fun game for their PS2, just don't expect any challenge.
---
Keep watching this space because in the next few days I'll be posting about a new console that will enter my collection with pictures, text, and video. It is one that I have been wanting for a long time and it is finally going to be here. Until then, see ya!

17Aug 09

Raiden Project - A compilation of the arcade versions of Raiden and Raiden II with a few extra options like selectable difficulty and an arranged soundtrack. Was released in North America as The Raiden Project and is much more rare and pricey on the secondary market. I picked up this one for $15 in near mint condition.
Tenchu: Stealth Assassins - I already had a greatest hits version, but I found this one locally for $3 in mint condition, so I thought, "Why not?"
Doko Demo Issyo and Koneko mo Issyo - Both of these titles are Pocketstation titles for Playstation that are essentially virtual pet simulators starring Sony's cat mascot known as Inoue Toro. $10 for both in mint condition.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - Physical box with two vouchers, one for the game and one for some kind of Marvel digital subscription which I don't care about. Anybody who wants to play give me a shout on PSN!
Street Fighter Alpha - Original long box (all plastic variation). This makes my entire PS1 collection complete in boxes which is always nice!

Blood Will Tell (PS2) Review
I recently pulled out Blood Will Tell from the depths of my Playstation 2 collection to give it a go. I got about ninety minutes into the game and by that point I had enough of it. To put it bluntly: It was one of the most boring action games I have played in a long time. This was very disappointing to me because I was looking forward to it based on gmsnpr's recommendation.
This game is based on the the 1960's manga and anime, Dororo. Very intriguing story, in the manga perhaps, but in this game it is delivered with sub-par English voice acting and is told in a very long and drawn out manner as if it was written for a child. It is very aggravating being that I am a perfectly intelligent adult and I am making very obvious connections way before the stupid, dense characters are. To make matters worse the game's different mechanics between the swordplay and gunplay seem like they'd be pretty fun, but they don't gel together at all in that you are either slashing or shooting, but you can't mix them up together like you can in Devil May Cry. The AI is dumb as a box of rocks too. Most of the time there is absolutely no pressure to engage the minor enemies in combat and they can simply be run past with no consequence. The game was also way too easy for the duration I played it. When I battled the third Fiend, all I had to do was run around to his back and keep slashing because he was so slow. Others Fiends were more "difficult", but it was more based on the need to dodge their easy to dodge attacks and get a few hits in and repeat ad nausem. And no, do not try to tell me that I didn't play enough. If I have to slog through 90+ minutes of boring/easy stuff to get to the "good parts" then the game has some big problems, namely quality issues. Nobody is more disappointed than I am that this great idea for an action game was completely screwed up in execution.
---
I recently heard that jollyroger was having problems with Castlevania (NES) and I decided to upload two videos, one for Stage 4 and one for Stage 5, that offer tips.

11Jul 09Hello everyone! The last few weeks have been some good gaming and some good pickups.
Updates from my last blog: Wolfenstein 3D has been finished and 100% trophies have been obtained. Still a great game even though a number of the levels later in the game require knowledge of secrets in order to be completed. I think that is stupid, but thems the breaks with that game. I am also now 11 hours into Crisis Core and it is still a great RPG. Not much to say expect one complaint: why the hell are the cutscenes not able to be skipped? It is very frustrating to lose a major battle, reload last save, and be forced to watch the same 5-minute cutscene again!
I bought and beat Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (I bought the rest of the trilogy later on from this past week too.) Besides the framerate dips that occur at times, the game could have been better, and much less frustrating, if the "mini-game" levels were cut or replaced with more great Sly platforming levels. Those mini-game levels were usually frustrating, sometimes easy (the shooting ones), but never fun. It seems as if Sucker Punch didn't have enough confidence in the core Sly platforming levels, so they added needless variety. To me, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile is what platformers should be: charming, endearing characters, decent story, great core platforming and related mechanics. All of those things are in Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, but the mini-game levels interrupt the greatness with annoying variety that doesn't need to be there: collecting games (against a clock), driving games, and even a rhythm game for most of the boss battle against Ms. Ruby. I don't want any of that crap in my platformers! If I want to play those things, I have other games that do them much better. Don't get me wrong, I really like Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, but I just have to air out my gripes about it. In this genre, less is more, IMO.
I also picked up Demon's Crest for the Super Nintendo, Wipeout Pulse for PSP, and Star Ocean: First Departure for PSP. Haven't played any of them for any real length of time, mostly was just to make sure they worked if they were used.
Found out that Mirror's Edge is now $20 for a new copy, so I picked it since it was the right price. The big news is that BlazBlue was released at the very end of June. Some might scoff at such a proclamation of that game being a big deal, but you are all wrong because it is. Check out NeonNinja's recent blog if you don't believe me. I have been watching match vids of it since it came out late last year in arcades and I knew I was going to get it day one, but I wasn't entirely sure I'd be big into it because I have never been a big fan of Guilty Gear. I like Guilty Gear, but it was never a fighter I was super into. Alas, I was wrong because I am really into BlazBlue! I really like the fact that each character is so unique from one another, more so than any other fighter I can think of. I mostly play Ragna the Bloodedge with my alternate being Iron Tager. I'm thinking about making Rachel Alucard another alternate, but I need to give her more test runs before I decide. I honestly have to say that BlazBlue could be my fighting game of the year. Street Fighter IV has some incredible competition which I didn't expect from this game. So, yeah, almost entirely just playing BlazBlue. If we are friends on PSN and you have this game, please don't be a wimp and let's have some matches. These are the games I like to play and I hardly ever get to play with anyone of my PSN list besides @VixDiesel, @Hart704, and @s0njas0n in Burnout Paradise and I am definitely not popping in that one anytime soon.

18Jun 09After a great week of E3 and Retro Revival Week all at once, I am now back to my normal gaming schedule. Since I bought Wolfenstein 3D for RRW I have continued to play it and I am now half way through Episode 4 (out of 6). I think the last time I played Wolfenstein 3D was probably back in the 1990s and while it is certainly dated by today's standards, it is still a pretty good game provided you can adapt to it's old sensibilities. Besides, who doesn't love killing Nazis?
Soon after the Wolfenstein 3D purchase, I also bought the PS1 download of Street Fighter Alpha 2. I'm mainly a collector of physical games, but when I can get something like SFA2 on the go via the PSP, I can't pass that up! I used to be of the mindset that Alpha 3 was the best of the Alpha series, but fairly recently I was playing Alpha 2 and came to the realization that I enjoy Alpha 2 a good deal more. Part of why is that I really like the fact that you have access to regular supers at the same time as the custom combos which is great because it give you more options during the fights, unlike SFA3 where you have to choose if you want A-ism (3 levels of supers), X-ism (one level 3 super), or V-ism (custom combo).
Last week also saw the arrival of the Big Surf Island DLC for Burnout Paradise. It has been about a year since they were going to originally release it and I'd have to say it kinda wasn't all that worth the wait. Unless I'm playing online with friends, I just have no motivation to play it because in actuality it is simply more of the same except now on an island just off of Angus Wharf. Don't get me wrong, it is well made, but for me to have cared more it should have arrived before the end of 2008. By the end of 2008 I was simply burned out of Burnout Paradise. I think this kind of long support for a game can be just as bad as it can be good for a game if it goes too long. For myself, I could easily wait for another Burnout for at least another 2 years from right now because of how worn out I am of it.
Another game I started playing this past week is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. I'm about 7 hours into it and I am finding it to be a very enjoyable RPG so far. My favorite thing is the combat and how it is kinda quirky in that it is real-time, but not 100% real-time. And of course the DMW is pretty much impossible to understand how it works exactly because it seems random at first, but is clearly influenced by something. The DMW is still fun to have and makes the combat more exciting and interesting. Crisis Core will definitely be in the running for my RPG of the Year!
BlazBlue is just around the corner, so I expect at least a few of my PSN buds to get to facing off against me at the end of the month! Do it!
Later!

2Jun 09Check out my playlist for Retro Revival Week with Varth!
Now that the big E3 press conferences are finished I can say that I thought Sony and Microsoft were the best followed by Nintendo in a distant third. Here are my thoughts as they pertained to the conferences from my Twitter feed as they were happening:
Microsoft
Tony Hawk Ride
That didn't show how that peripheral works at all!
Modern Warfare 2
Commence creaming pants! LOL
That last one was a joke. I don't actually care about Modern Warfare 2.
Real-time ice climbing!
They are really trying to sell it to us that he is really playing what we are seeing. Yeah right.
Final Fantasy XIII
Oh, the same FFXIII footage we've already seen from the demo on PS3. *snore*
Crackdown 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction
Crackdown 2! Yay!
L4D 2? Already?
Crackdown 2 and L4D 2 look great, but Splinter Cell isn't my cup of tea.
Sam Fisher, AKA, Mr. Badass! lol
Forza III, Halo: ODST, Halo: Reach
They can't be so certain about Forza 3 because GT5 hasn't even been really seen yet.
@thewesker I'm not saying GT5 will be better. This kind of racing game isn't my thing. I know both will be great.
Halo...not interesting.
@LordofUltima I don't get why they separated from MS to make more Halo either.
Last.fm, Facebook, Twitter
I don't listen to last.fm, I sometimes use it to find people with similar taste in music. Why would anyone care about last.fm on a console?
Facebook? Bah, lame.
Metal Gear Solid Rising
Yeah, the next MGS. NOT MGS4!
OMFG! I need that Metal Gear game!
I'm assuming MGS Rising will be PS3 as well.
Playing as Raiden will be so awesome!
Project Natal
Why does Kudo's avatar look more like Ludacris than himself?
Nice swipe at Nintendo, Kudo! LOL
Brown, huh? Like ****. Describes this part of the show very well.
Molyneux out to over promise something.
1992 called and said it wanted it's virtual reality back.
Nintendo
@Donutta Yeah, they will most likely boast their asses off. >_>
Next Nintendo will expand video games to the undead.
Everyone's game, including the undead.
New SMB on DS was not all that good, unfortunately.
They started OK, but now they are right onto the dumb ****
Adding to 10? Rolling timber? That is exactly what I'm interested in!, he lied.
If I wanted 'more real' then I would go do the real thing.
Synchronized air swimming!
There is just nothing to say about this stuff. It is so underwhelming.
Blooorg! That is how I feel about this conf. so far.
I have heard that Golden Sun has been good in the past. Haven't played any of them.
More 'tween games? Did Ubisoft's conf. ever end?
Spouting Nintendo slogans only makes those people sound like sheeple.
WarioWare DIY has interesting promise.
I'd rather have Twitter integration with DSi and not Facebook.
We know, Iwata, the video game industry is expanding to new players. Can we see something interesting?
Hey, if you don't have the skills to complete, get the **** out of the kitchen!
Why do we always have to be subject to this philosopy speech every time Nintendo does a conf.?
That was positively BORING!!
Wow, something interesting! SMG2.
This part of Nintendo's conf. is definitely the best so far.
Nintendo is threatening to get "edgy!"
I wouldn't call Metroid "edgy," but I guess it is for Nintendo.
Mostly underwhelming conf., but for me that was probably unavoidable.
Sony
Uncharted 2
Uncharted 2 looking so hot!
F*** that looked so amazing!
MAG
Damn this will be epic!
MAG looked very cool.
PSP Go
Good to hear that people like me who prefer physical discs will not be left out for the future of PSP.
Wow, PSP Go is way too expensive! Good thing I don't want one.
Gran Turismo PSP
Racing sims like Forza and GT aren't my thing, but they look cool.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Hideo!
Peace Walker certainly looks good and very Metal Gear.
Home as the defacto standard in gaming community? Uh, not so much.
I think their montages are pretty nice, but there are way too many of them.
Wish they had something so show of Agent.
Assassin's Creed 2
Good s*** with AC2!
Haven't played AC1, but AC2 looks awesome!
Final Fantasy XIV Online
FFXIV?! PS3 exclusive? WOW.
Nice FFXIV announcement, but way too early.
FFXIV is online? Damn it! Not into MMOs.
More motion contollers? NOOO!
All of this motion control **** makes me want to kill myself.
ModNation Racers
ModNation Racers looked pretty neat.
The Last Guardian
Trico now named The Last Guardian!
Much nicer visuals than the pre-E3 alpha build!
Cannot wait for that!
Gran Turismo 5
Are they really mashing up with NASCAR and off-road stuff along with the normal stuff in GT5? Nice.
God of War III
GoW III. Time to bust a nut!!

This past week or so I went out to Sears and found some a few games at unexpectedly good prices! I know I said last blog that I wasn't going to get any more games for awhile, but when you come across these type of deals, you gotta go for it.
Folklore - $9.97
Timeshift - $9.97
Heavenly Sword - $14.97
TImeshift wasn't much cheaper than can be had from almost anywhere, but Heavenly Sword and Folklore are both pricey. Heavenly Sword and Folklore are always around $50-60 (new) and usually $35 (used).
On the playing games front, because of the release of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile for Wii, I decided I'd play though the original PS1 release again. Still a completely awesome game that I really enjoy! Since I don't have a Wii, I checked out someone's entire playthough of the new Wii remake on YouTube and I have to say it still looks like it is almost completely identical to the PS1 version outside of the visuals. However, there are a few things that were changed from the original which seems stupid because they make the game even easier than it already was. The biggest culprit is that you get five hearts of health in the Wii remake as opposed to only three in the original. Regardless of those minor changes I wholeheartedly recommend the game no matter which version you choose, though I still prefer the original.
I also finally started playing Killzone 2. I have been having a hard time getting motivated to play it because I was involved in the multiplayer beta back in November and I think it spoiled my enthusiasm I had for the game at that time. I can say the same for Resistance 2, which is probably why I don't own it yet. I'll likely turn down any future invites I get to betas because of these two revelations. It is a bummer that I end up this way, but I can't help it for some reason.
Other games I played off and on recently: Tekken, Bleach DS 2nd, Ridge Racer, Mortal Kombat II, Tetris DX.
Somehow I got sucked into playing the original Tekken and the original Ridge Racer, both of which hold up pretty well considering their age. Mortal Kombat II, on the otherhand, is way too basic of a fighter for my tastes nowadays, which is something I could say for the whole Mortal Kombat series with the exception of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
I am totally excited for E3 and am looking forward to the awesome announcements that are sure to come out of it. I'll be twittering my thoughts on the press conferences as they happen, so if you'd like to follow me on Twitter to see those, check me out at twitter.com/usagi704!
Also, I have put up videos of my collections for a few of my game systems on my YouTube account. Check those out if you are interested. Later!

Back at ya this blog with my last gaming acquisitions for awhile. Some good stuff for some good deals have been picked up this time around.
It was good to find You Don't Know Jack for PS1 because playing my plethora of old Windows based YDKJ games hasn't been possible since I have moved to Linux, at least not without screwing around with something like Wine. This particular version is very good with no noticeable loading and is very comparable to the PC versions. Found Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for only $19.99 new, so that was a pleasant surprise, especially since most local used shops sell were still selling for about $26 used. Picked up Nightshade and Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies used for cheap, $3 and $7 respectively.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters is a pretty good fighting game for the Super Nintendo especially since whenever Konami attempts a fighting game, things usually don't end well.
Tetris DX for Game Boy Color is easily my favorite Tetris ever and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest can be confusing if you don't know what you need to do or where to go, but otherwise is a pretty good game.
The last game I acquired is something I didn't have when I took the picture above. That game is the excellent Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand for GBA. This is actually a game produced by Hideo Kojima and has a few obvious Metal Gear-esque stealth mechanics even though stealth isn't a big part of the game. Definitely check it out if you can find it!

3Apr 09Big surprise, more games!

Picked up Dragon Quest V for DS since I wanted the arguably best game in the series. I have always appreciated the Dragon Quest games, but I haven't ever been much of a fan. I enjoy them every so often and I thought I'd pick this up.
Castlevania for NES was something I wanted since the Famicom cartridge version is about $100 and the only cheaper version is on the Famicom Disk System which is a system I don't plan on acquiring. I play NES carts via an adapter and I actually finished the game for the first time ever and then finished it again with no lives lost. Once you dismantle a game down to what you need to do to make it easy, even otherwise tough games like Castlevania are child's play.
Moon Crystal and Recca: Summer Carnival '92 are both NES reproductions that I had gotten from NES Reproductions.com. Both are great games that never made their way to North America and are pretty rare.
I was at Best Buy earlier in the week and decided I'd pick up Killzone 2. I participated in the multiplayer beta last November and enjoyed it a good deal, so getting KZ2 was a foregone conclusion for me. I should start playing it really soon.
Shortly after I received my shipment of Famicom stuff a few weeks ago, I just decided I would finally see if I could find a copy of Contra and as you can see, huge success. This particular version is great because of all of the extra animation in the stages like the trees swaying in the wind on the Jungle stage, the falling snow on the Snow Field stage, and, my favorite, the pulsating walls and ground of the Alien Lair stage.
Finally got my hands on King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match and Samurai Shodown Anthology too. KOF98UM takes the greatness of the original KOF98 and makes it better by adding characters that weren't in the original and also added the ability to combine elements from the Extra groove and the Advanced groove to create the Ultimate groove. For example, my main team right now is Geese/Eiji/Clark with the Extra groove's dashing (as opposed to Advanced having a run), Advanced groove's rolling (as opposed to Extra having a side step), and Extra groove's self-charged super meter w/ a single stock (as opposed to Advanced having a typical super meter with three stocks). This makes for a more interesting game in that you might want to play certain characters differently from others with a different mix of options.
Samurai Shodown Anthology is really great because it includes all six of the main games in the series and all are perfect conversions from what I can tell. I'd say this is SNK's highest quality compilation yet for the PS2 that is. This compilation is also available for PSP and Wii, but I've heard those are of pretty poor quality, along the lines of the North American only release of King of Fighters: Orochi Saga. If that is true, then skip those versions because the KOF: Orochi Saga release was full of sound glitches and was inexcusably bad.
