I became curious of this movie because of the high level of negative feedback it has gotten since it was first shown in theaters. Could this film really be as bad as the critics said? I decided to see it yesterday to find out for myself.
My verdict, After Earth isn't as bad as what most of critics have been declaring. However, the movie is basically not inspiring. You won't be remembering it years from now. I liked the CGI animation even if they're not the most convincing and realistic as compared to other movies like Avatar for example. The acting is pretty weak. Will Smith's son was given the large task of carrying the movie but his acting skills are simply not yet developed enough. I have seen other action adventure movies wherein the lead characters are young teenagers like the movies Kick Ass and Hanna in which the very young lead actresses were able to convincingly play their roles. Jaden Smith acting talent isn't yet at that level. Will Smith's character is also forgettable. There was no charisma at all. His character is not supposed to not show any emotions but I was hoping that his character would warm up and move the audience at least at the very end of the film. In fact the only moving scene in the entire movie was that of the giant Condor sacrificing itself. The CGI condor is the best "actor" in the movie.
As far as the plot is concerned, it baffled me that the main antagonist/alien creature was able to detect human pheromones with its supposedly keen sense of smell and yet it couldn't smell the blood dripping out of Jaidan's character's hands. Human blood gives out a more distinct odor than human pheromones in the first place. It's also unbelievable that in a span of only a thousand years that Earth's wildlife had undergone a massive leap in evolution.
So from a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest. I give the movie a 5. Not good. Not bad. Not memorable.
