The way I review and score my games.

The way I review and score my games.

When it comes to reviewing games I've played, I tend to review games I ether like, or games I really feel I need to write a review for, whether it's bad or good. My reviews are constructed into different section which I give individual scores for. The main categories i.e. graphics, game-play, sound effect, and my say, are what sum up the final overall score for the game which is very technical. I have constructed a way to add up and calculate a way in getting the final overall score, and so far its been working well. Within ever main category, where are additional sub categories to help me get the true score of that category. Confused? Take the "Graphics". Within the graphics section, to get my final score on the graphics, I judge the animation (which IS part of the graphic presentation), background atmosphere, character design, overall presentation, and special effect. After i score each one, I then calculate then and get my final score on the graphics. I then do the same with the games-play, and sound design. I also add an additional section which I score additional categories, which has nothing to do with the final overall score of the game i.e. the story, online multiplayer, soundtrack etc. Not every game has an additional section in there reviews i.e. with older generation games I just tend to stick to the main section. The reason why I don't add the additional categories (the story, online multiplayer, soundtrack etc) to the final score is because not all games have storyline, online multiplayer, and not all game have a worthy enough soundtrack to even score etc.
The main focus in all my review is the "My Say" section. The my say section is what I feel about the game. Lets take F.E.A.R. 2 as an example. I love F.E.A.R. 2 and I personally gave it a 10/10 in the "My Say" section, but the overall score is a worthy 8.5/10 after calculating everything up. Just because a game get an overall low score, does not necessary mean the game is poor from me. I love talking about everything I can talk about in my reviews, but if you just really want to know what I thought of the game and what score I personally gave a game, read the "My Say" section. Remember, the "My Say" section is not about the graphics, game-play etc being perfect in any way. If I give a game a 10/10 in the My Say section, I'm not stating the game is perfect. The May Say section is about what I truly thought of the game, what ever the reason may be. I don't believe a game is purely perfect, and if there is one, what's the fun in write a review?

Now what about games I don't review. Games I don't review are different. When I play a game that I feel no reason to review, the overall score will be based on what I say. Example I think Lair is a terrible game there for I gave it a 2/10. If I was to review it and calculate it's final score, it would probably get an overall score of 4 or 5 due to the graphics and sound effect being rather great. Same applies with F.E.A.R. 2. If I where to give F.E.A.R. 2 a straight score without reviewing or calculating it, it would most decently get a 10/10. So if you see a game I've rated without reviewing it, the score is purely based on what I thought, despite the graphics etc.

    Just thought i would say

The Best and Worse of 2009 BLOG - Part 3/7

The Best and Worst of 2009

    Part 3/7

    Best Animation
    Killzone 2

Seriously, the animation is spot on. From reloading your weapon, to the enemies reaction from the impact of bullets is just insane.

    ------------------------

Runners Up - Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Best Ending
    Infamous

Seriously, the ending took me by surprise… and I loved it.

    ------------------------

    Runner Up - Uncharted 2

    ------------------------

    Worst - Borderlands

Borderlands is all about it's game-play and it's co-op play. If your playing for the story, it's ending is very disappointing indeed.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Best Background Atmosphere
    Flower

The most beautiful and calming atmosphere I've ever seen. Not just in 2009, but probably ever.

    ------------------------

Runner Up - Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Killzone 2

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Best Funny Game
    Ghostbusters: The Game

The whole game to me was one big laugh. I love Ghostbusters the movie, and I found the game, quite enjoyable.

    ------------------------

Runners Up - Brutal Legend and Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Best Soundtrack
    Brutal Legend

Hard rock… what I love best.

    ------------------------

    Runner Up - Dragon Age

    ------------------------

Worst - Wolfenstein and Terminator Salvation

The music in Wlfenstein is uninspiring, and Terminator Salvation was not movie based material.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Best Boss Fights

    Wolfenstein

Strong, challenging, and a great walk down memory lain.

    ------------------------

Runner Up - Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time

    ------------------------

Worst - X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Prototype

Constants repetitive boss fights in Wolverine, and uninspiring boss fights in Prototype.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Best Stealth Elements

    Batman: Arkham Asylum

It may not have the best stealth mechanics as other older games, but it is the best in 2009.

    ------------------------

    Worst - Rogue Warrior

What I looks for in a Stealth game (in this generation anyway) a game with great A.I. interesting stealth level designs, game-play mechanics such as enemies can hear you, can smell you, camouflage mechanics such as hiding in the shadows etc… While Rogue Warriors did have stealth elements, it was pretty uninspiring.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Best Free Roaming Game
    Borderlands

It's big, it's fun, it's every man for himself.

    ------------------------

    Runner Up - Infamous

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow part four will consists of… Best in-game A.I., technical game-play mechanics, game cover art, ending climax, imaginative graphics, cinematic in-game sequences, writing and dialogue, downloadable PSN game, downloadable content, developer of the year, and the biggest disappointment of the year.
