Working for Gamestop is aweful!
Before you consider a life of work at Gamestop I'd like to warn you.
If you are a manager, you will be under paid. There are MANY other places you can work for and get far better pay with far less work and stress. You WILL be working your butt off if you are at amid-volume store and it WILL be non-stop until the shift is over. You will work more the 40 hours a week (50 hours most of the time) and of course you don't get any more or any less money for doing so. You will attend inventories for each store in your District outside of hours and yet still work your normal hours on top of it. You will also do the same for meetings. I don't know about you, but any other place I've worked for counted meetings as hours worked.
Reserves and Edge Card memberships are REQUIRED to keep your job. If you and a manager, then it is even harder because your GA's and SGA's numbers also count for you. If you only shop and Gamestop and the person that works there pesters you about getting one of those... you now know why. Their job is on the line. I've stopped shopping at a few Gamestops in the past because of getting over pestered about getting a reserve and not that I've worked for them, I now understand why. There has been times my DM has been in the store and I've have to really push for sales with him standing there, and later felt like dirt for being something I get so irritated by. In all my years of retail, this is the only place that has pestered me to pester the customer into a sale like this. I am not a use car salesman, if I was, I'd sale cars. If Gamestop wants me to be one, they need to pay me some commission.
Managers, DM's, RM's are lucky if they ever see a bonus and yet there are people that work at other places that see one every month, and to top it off, the bonuses are better then at Gamestop. To make matters worse the ASM's don't get any bonus, unlike other places.
How is it that other retail places that make just as much money per store have far more people working for them at one time. Gamestop only gives each store enough hours to barely have any help all day. 3 people all day? WTF? We are NOT allowed to go over the amount of hours that are posted REGARDLESS of the problems and NOBODY who willis paid by the hour is allowed to work past 40 hours. Doing so could get you written up or fired. Any other place I've worked for let us go over if we needed to. Considering that ASM's ALWAYS get 40 hours a week, if another store needs help, the ASM can't go unless the the store goes shorthanded later in the week. That would leave one person in the store sometimes for up to 6 hours. It is a little hard to go to the bathroom when you have to keep an eye on the store. This is not easy in a mid to high volume store. This leaves only one person to send to other stores, the SGA, and it can sometimes be hard to locate one that is free to come help. This REALLY sucks when a Manager or ASM goes on vacation. Plus considering any hours worked counts towards the other store, they still have to find time to be short on help because they can go over hours given to them. Gamestop DOES NOT EVER seem to give stores enough hours. This makes it hard when people get sick as well.
Marketing to put up at the last moment. There are many times they throw things at you a few hours before you are to put them up, Banners, shelf talkers... ect... Buy 2 get 1 free is never known to the managers until a few hours before it goes live. So we have to RUSH to get everything posted, because it they don't see that we have made any B2G1F sales by the end of that 1st night, they give us a hard time about not getting those sales. All the sale seem to be made for is to get Edge Card Memberships over what ever given weekend the want to put it on.
Talking bad about Gamestop can get you fired. If you talk bad about the on the net or anywhere else and they find out, they WILL HUNT for a way to get you fired... looking for every little slip you might make to give them a reason to do it. Thus the people who talk bad about time either don't know, don't care, or no longer works for them. I dare you to google "gamestop sucks" or some other phrase of dis-like to gamestop, you WILL find a lot of people who use to work for them that have learned how aweful of a company they really are. They don't care about people below DM's, because EVERYONE (who does not know)wants to work at Gamestop, so you ARE replaceable for a LOW pay rate. Why do you think there are so many people on the net trying to warn you about working there, before you make the same mistake they did. They have some kind of C.A.R.E.S program that you have to agree too when you are hired to prevent you from being able to sue them from being mistreated.
Trade in credit is really sucking now. Why trade in 5 360 games and only get $17 or $18 for them? When Gamestop is turning around and sales them for $30 to $40 a game. This is going on more since about 2 months ago. Trade in values have dropped like rocks, Why? I'm willing to bet it is because Gamestops stocks have finally started going down. Buy lower and yet still not drop the prices, what kind of since does that make? They could at least drop the used prices as well.
I've seen many PS2 games get traded in for less the a $1. Many are only 15 cents. You are lucky if you get more then $2. If your PS2 or Gamecube games have a LOT of scratches on them, don't even bother taking them in. If they take them in, they are only taking pity on you and end up putting them up for sale just to have a hard time tring to sale it, or they tick off a customer because they keep getting defective games from the store. THAT brings up something,if you are buying used from aGamestop and get a lot ofdefective games, start shopping at another location, because the people who work there don't seem to care enough to keep messed up games out of your hands. This happens at a lot of gamestops. Sure, I can understand they want togive someone MAX credit, butat what cost? Take in a bunch of scratched up games from one and sale them to many just to lose a LOT of customers to help keep that one?Do you self a faver and never buy a used XBOX 360, they have a 75% return rate, this includes the referbs that get shipped from the warehouse and Microsoft.
I'm posting this to help get the word out, you don't want to work for them. You are better off working for a small games store or finding a better, more caring, company, not one that only wants to put money in the big guys bank account. If you don't want to support such a company, the shop at Best buy, Wal-mart, Target, K-Mart, Ebay, Amazon, or that little games store around the block. Gamestop does not deserve your money.

Media, gamers, and fanboys.
Why is it that the media and the people they talk to think Sony is going to win this game war and most of the public (gamers) think otherwise. It is almost as if the media and the public are at war or something. Then we have fan boys who fight over what system is better and (I hate to say it) the Nintendo ones are the worst about it. Why? Perhaps because they have a hevey love for Nintendo. Sure Nintendo earned it. I use to be a Nintendo Fanboy myself, so I know how they feel. Sony Fanboys can be a pain to listen to because to them it is all about graphics... Well I've got news for you, there are a LOT of people out there who love gameplay. I don't even want to talk about the Microsoft Fanboys & the PC nerds. Do I have room to talk. Perhaps not. I'm all of them. I'm into all the systems and love my PC. You kids (yeah I know a lot of you are adults, but you are acting like kids) need to learn that all the systems have good games on them. Be a little more open minded and look for them. Don't brush them off just because of the system they are on.- Posted May 8, 2007 7:51 am PT
