Looks like I am being forced to retire from my guides.

The reason for this is that I have not been on working on my queue due to (1) being on vacation for the summer and (2) not being able to get my queue to load in a quick manner (changes to the site have really caused it to work incredibly slowly on my computer. This has been going on for several month. It is so slow that actually clearing submissions is simply too tedious for me... I don't like having to wait 10 minutes to clear 20 submissions. I really wish trusted users could also clear submissions. I preferred the co-editor systemn of TVTome for that reason. I could go on break without having to worry about such things. I don't know why such a system was never implemented here).

In any case... I suppose that now it is "open season" on several highly desirable guides. I hope who ever gets them does a good job with them. In all honesty, I never really wanted to maintain this many guides. I just liked submitting/correcting things. Unfortunately, however, submissions are the selection criteria for editorship. And I ended up with a bunch. Some of which I have not maintained at all due to a serious lack of interest. Hope they go to the more interested (or even slightly interested).

I shall be retiring from most of my guides. I will make as many people trusted users as possible as I retire. Hopefully you can maintain that status as the change happens (though I am skeptical of this occurring).

I will be retiring from all but the Alfred Hitchcock guides, the Millennium Guide, and the Outer Limits (original series). All of that content was created by me at TVTome (when I was under the impression that I held copyright over the material). I feel that I am perfectly in my rights to maintain them even now.

Looks like the IMDB has rolled out a new TV site. It will take a while to get used to it but I like it a lot.

It shows promise since it really focuses more on the information. That is the thing that made me really like the original TVTome. And is something that I feel is neglected in TV.com.

In any case, perhaps some competition is for the good.

A bug has taken away all my level and ability to access by approvals and ability to add things to the site.

That is really awesome... by "awesome" I mean lameo!

I have't posted in a while. Mostly because I have just been lurking and doing editing. No longer at the ridiculous pace I used too... but that is because I have two jobs.

I stopped mostly because of a vast frustration I had with a bug which manifested it self the day I completed a 200 episode plus guide and was shocked to discover thatt he bug messed up every cast list!

I tried fixing it and the cast list went funky the next day. Then I just decided to stop until it was fixed.

I don't think the bug was fixed... I think they just stopped using the script. Hopefully next time they activate it... the bug is gone. Else I am gonna have to redo a bunch of guides all over again

Looks like I lost editorship of the X-files guide.

I heard there is a bug where retired editors are getting unretired. X-files does have a retired editor, but I didn't lose editorship to him.

I lost it to J_Dawson who should be 8th down on the contributor list. Has anyone noticed any other problems like this?

I'm glad that the site is finally back!

In other good news... it looks like I have finally hit level 50. I do wonder whether one can progress pass that point.

My submission totals for the curious are as follows:

    Accepted: 11808
    Denied: 180
    Pending: 98
    Total: 12086

Well it looks like Contribution Points have finally been updated. This is good news. I have beeen waiting for one since I had a lot of contributions approved. I am now editor for the X-files guide! This makes me happy since it is one of my favorite shows. At least it was in its first few seasons

There is more than a 1000 entries in its queue. I will try to get through them all by tomorrow.

This applies mostly to notes and allusions.

I follow the standards of the wikipedia. I believe these standards are the correct ones. I have also seen these standards utilized in print. When referring to an episode use quotes. When refering to a series use italics. Please do not use bold. Bold is not the correct way to punctuate these things.

Furthermore... of you are referring to another show or another episode. Add HTML. It makes it much easier to navigate the site. Its hypertext! Use it when you can! Make sure however that you use links that are internal to the website. No ads!

Look at the notes here for how things are done correctly.

I have had a little over 500 approved submissions since the last level update. Mostly because I have been bored and fixing a number of guides.

Much to my surprise, however, I have only increased by 1% on my level.

Either this is a bug... or its gonna be while before I get to see level 37.

Wow... today over 200 of my submissions were processed by the staff!

From where I am sitting it looks like the submission backlog may be handled after all. Good job staff!

P.S.: I'll try to put a "couple more" submissions in the queue to make up for it

I've posted this to the forums but I decided to post it in my blog too since I am interested in what people think.

I have noticed a number of inconsistencies with regard to Omnibus Shows (shows with different parts). And I am curious about people's thoughts on them because they effect an number of guides I edit.

Omnibus shows are not common for many live shows but for animated shows they are quite common.

Consider the guides for Tarzan and the Super 7 and Tarzan Lord of the Jungle.

The former guides lists all shows that were shown as part of the omnibus with the exception of the Tarzan episodes. The latter guides lists all animated episodes that were produced under the title Tarzan Lord of the Jungle. Tarzan episodes were shown as part of several different omnibus series.

Its my opinion that the Tarzan and the Super 7 episode guide is a sloppy mess because episode titles are forced to list which segment of the omnibus the episode was a part of. Episodes are out of order and the guide looks terrible.

I prefer the Tarzan Lord of the Jungle episode guide which is more aesthetically pleasing and more organized since it localizes all shows produced by Filmation under the Tarzan name under one guide.

Honestly I think guides should be listed by production. After all it means more guides and hence the opportunity for people people to be editors and people seem to like that.

Of course by production I don't mean "All incarnation guides". I don't think the DIC episodes of GI Joe should be listed with the Sunbow episodes. Production, however, is probably the best way to differentiate shows.

A further reason for this is that sometimes episodes of a series are repeated in Omnibus shows as part of different shows. This is what happened with Tarzan. I don't think such repeats should be listed in the guide.

Entries should exist of course for Omnibus shows... but those entries should just offer HTML pointers to guides for the shows that were part of them.

Note: This doesn't only apply to old shows. Many of the episodes of Batman TAS, Batman Gotham Knights, and Superman TAS were broadcast as part of the Omnibus The New Batman/Superman Adventures. I don't think those guides should be changed. They are excellent as they are!

I dunno... I just like some consistency in my databases

I have managed to acquire three new guides.

    Lights Out
    Krypto: the Superdog
    Cool McCool

The second of these guides needed a lot of work, but I am glad that it is done. I think the submission backlog is really moving nowadays. Which is a good thing. I have little information Lights Out and Cool McCool. Hopefully people can help out. I acquired the guides by fixing their episode lists which were filled with errors. The Cool McCool guide was in made shape mostly because I screwed up when I made the episode list at TVTome. Thankfully I have been able to correct that mistake. One of the advantages I think of the new TV.com system.

I also want to congratulate X-626 and TVvuer69 who are going to be made trusted users for the Krypto and Pac-Man guides (respectively). Keep up the good submissions.

I finally managed to pass the 4000 mark in accepted submissions. Most are for the shows that I edit, but I have had a lot for other shows as well.

    Accepted: 4024
    Pending: 632
    Denied: 38
    Total: 4694

I did get 38 denials. Some of were mistakes on my part. But most of them came from a number of episode summaries that were bumped in favor of someone elses.

I have a lot pending. Mostly for obscure shows... so I suspect that my submissions are quite low in the vast enormous queue of doom! In any case, hopefully some of them will be cleared out eventually.

I have been moderating people's submissions to my guides. There are still some stuff in my queue for guides that I don't edit. Sadly they are for guides with editors who seem to be inactive. This is unfortunate. An inactive editor to a popular show is a problem. They are not approving submissions so no one can pass them and submissions to their guides are just building up in the general queue making is even bigger and more problematic. This problem, of course, will go away though once they get the submission backlog of doom under control. But as of now its a problem.

So I used to be lead editor for a guide at TVTome with a certain co-editor that shall remain nameless. When the transfer to TV.com was made I ended up in second place on that guide with several hundred points.

I PMed the editor of the guide who used to be my co-editor and asked whether I could be made a trusted user for the guide. He hasn't gotten back to me, but I actually suspect that he is ignoring my request since I have noticed that he has posted to the forum several times since I PMed him and has added to the guide.

This somewhat annoys me mostly because I used to be solo editor for the guide on TVTome. When he asked me to let him co-edit... I allowed him to join on. Unfortunately he seems unwilling to return the favor now.

I don't know whether it is sour grapes or what. I have rejected people who have asked to be trusted users. I also have plenty of other guides to edit. I think the thing that is bothering me though is that I let him join on when he asked and now he won't return the favor. It just seems a little bit rude and uncool.

Well it is now several months and 3500 submission later. I think I have finally gotten used to TV.com enough to make some real comparisons that aren't seen through the lens of "oh no... I'm not used to X, therefore X is bad".

    Changes for the better:
    (1) I like the points system. It spurs activity on the site and contribution to the site. This is good. The more information the better! Sure it can produce some annoying games... but I don't think that is a bad thing. I still wonder whether point values are assigned in the correct manner. If someone's level determines where their entries stand in the moderation queues, it seems to me that things like contributions should be more heavily weighed than Blogs, Reviews, Forum Posts, etc. I think that's is how it started, but it may have been changed in the latest "bug fix". Its either that or its now harder to go up when you get to a higher level.
    (2) I like the additions of many of the user options. The Blog is nice as is the User History. I like being able to see something I submitted a while ago.
    (3) The staff seems to be continually working on making the site better. That I can see their progress in their blogs is nice. People may claimed to be ignored, but hey there are a lot of things to do and certain things are priorities while others are not.
    (4) More reviews. This is a good thing. I like to see review (quality reviews) and I like to be in a position to rate a random episode of a show if I want to. At the old TVTome you couldn't do this. You needed approval. Now anyone can do it. Sure you get some horrible spelling... but I am of the feeling that if they allow us to rate reviews (as opposed to click agree or disagree) the cream will rise to the top. The agree/disagree button is bad for this purpose mostly because sometimes a review can be interesting and insightful, but something I disagree with it.
    (5) Its good to see the forums under control. I really was beginning to dislike them.

Changes for the worse (and hoping that they'll get better):
    (1) People Guides: In many ways I am saddened by what has happened to people guides. Credits are listed in some sort of alphabetical (or perhaps arbitrary order) instead of chronologically! Dates are not listed for appearances! None of this is helpful when one is trying to figure out who was in what when. Furthermore information is arbitrarily split up... Re-curring roles are separated from all other roles. The changes that need to be made here are obvious, List them chronologically. IMDB does it. TVTome does. They did it because it makes the information easier to access. One positive thing though is taking power away from people editors. There was never anything more annoying that realizing that some people editor decided to list a recurring guest star of your show as show star. You had to go back and redo all the damage that was done and going through a bunch of guide information is not easy. Its much easier to destroy than create.
    (2) Cast and Crew listings: There is no need to list a biography sample of the cast or crew members. This is just pointless. Allow them to be listed in accordance with how they were credited. TVTome let you do that. Its inappropriate to see a minor figure listed prominently and the show's actual guest start listed in the middle or the bottom. And why are recurring cast not listed for the episodes they appeared in? That makes no sense.
    (3) Entering Cast and Crew: Its much harder than TVTome. MUCH HARDER. And MUCH MORE time consuming. The search option needs to improve to give you the choices that you need. The deletion bugs need to be fixed as well as the special character bug. Its all very frustrating. I used to like adding cast and crew... now it is one of my least favorite aspects of the site. I also don;t like the fact that some crew titles are missing. Like the write in your crew credit thing from TVTome is gone. Tha really makes me sad because that feature could have made TVTome or TV.com superior to IMDB information-wise and that is no easy feat.
    (4) Massive Submission Backlog: This is a problem. I'm sure it will be gotten to, but this should be a priority. Heck I and many other editors would probably jump at a chance to have a crack at it.

There's more on both sides but I'm getting tired...

I just posted a review for Justice League Unlimited's episode Question Authority. The episode was good I quite recommend it.

I don't review as often as I should and I tend to be a bit wordy. I think I will try to review episodes more often though. Probably classic shows though. There are not enough reviews for classic shows in my opinion. I do enjoy thinking about an episode and trying to figure out some worthwhile observations to make about it.

I have assigned a few trusted users onto some of my guides. Hopefully my bad experiences with co-editors at TVTome will not be repeated.

So congratulations to VillaFan, lstaltari, jrgreenmd, who are now trusted users for V, The Andy Griffith Show and Babylon 5 respectively.

How does one become a trusted user for one of the guides listed to your right? Well first of all one contributes enough points to be an trusted user. Secondly one's contributions need to be of a high quality. In other words, I don't need to correct or reject them for spelling, punctuation, grammar, sense, bad use of the English language, bad HTML, copyright violations, too many forced line breaks, etc.

One also has to give me an idea that one genuinely cares about the show they are going to help edit rather than is just adding things in some lame race to have the most points.

Also I ask of any trusted user that if I am supplanted as editor, that I be made a trusted user after I am supplanted. I think its only fair and a nice thing to do

In a final note... please don't ask to become a trusted user. Since I moderate submissions I know who is meeting the qualifications and who is not. I'm sorry to sound a bit jaded. My standards are I think as high as they ought to be. I think I have standards that are consistent with other informative sites on the internet (IMDB and Wikipedia). I want the guides to look nice and present information in a clear, accurate, and pleasant manner.

I'm talking from experience. On TVTome I had to deal with a few problematic co-editors (like the guy who deleted a cast member from the guest cast of each episode so that they could be listed as starring cast... when they simply were not listed as starring cast on the show. I had to spend a week going through every episode to undo what he had done. It was quite frustrating after he promised to not mess with the credits) and do not want to repeat that unpleasant experience.
