2006 1uPs and Poisons
2006 was an awesome year for gaming, with tons of new games and console smash hits, but with that came a few downers this year. I'm gonna recap the best and worst for those who care.
1uP: Next Gen has Arrived
Yeah, basically the next generation has arrived, with the Xbox 360 already taking hold of some market share and Wii and PlayStation 3 both showing extreme potential. The winner will be decided in the years ahead, so for now, we marvel at the technology and games that is offered.
Poison: Next Gen Shortages
Sadly, each next-gen console has experienced a or many shortages. Frankly, this sucks, I haven't gotten my Wii yet, and I dont like it. Poison.
1uP: Developers exercising their right to freedom of expression
More developers like Rockstar are needed in this industry. They dont take crap from anybody and make their games the way they want. As long as the ESRB rates their games fair, they will continue to sell like hot-cakes. This year, it was Bully.
Poison: Jack Thompson...again
He's pretty much here for bashing Bully without even playing the game. The guy has serious issues and needs to chill out, but that clearly isn't going to be happening anytime soon. It might just be me, but I have a feeling we'll reluctantly read about him again in 2007.
1uP: Microsoft's E3 Press Event
In the words of Jeff Gerstmann, Microsoft went out there and blasted everyone with "GAMES!...just.. GAMES". Gears of War, Viva Pinata, Confirmation of GTA IV, Halo 3 trailer, this was the best press conference I had seen in years. 1uP to MSFT.
Poison: Sony's E3 Press Event
I try not to hold too much bias, but Sony's press event was just sad. Although their after event was supposedly a hit, with games playable, the press show sucked. They seemed like a company on the verge of falling apart, showing no signs of strength, seemingly copying another company's very ideas, and resting their entire event on numbers, figures, and "Riiiiiiiiidge Raaacer!". If the big three hold another round of press events (e3 is gone remember?), I hope Sony learns a thing or two from Microsoft, SHOW THE GAMES!
1uP: Next-generation console games
What an impressive showing, from Gears of War and Viva Pinata, to Zelda and Resistance; this year, the next-gen consoles were king, and they proved it with strong titles in all genres. Every console gamer knows that this year was just awesome. Too bad I can't say the same for PC gamers.
Poison: PC games
This year was a pretty weak year on the PC front. There was that Half-Life 2 Episode, and some neat expansions, but I can't really say that anything interested me. Dark Messiah caught my attention for a while, but that too turned out to be a dud. 2005 was one of the biggest years for the PC but 2006 was just sad.
Well, thats it.
Have a happy new year!- Posted Dec 31, 2006 6:45 pm PT
