Video games have often allowed players to fully immerse themselves into the world of the game. From the very first game I played, Super Mario Brothers on the original Nintendo, to the most recent game, Metal Gear Rising, games have the ability to transplant you to a place in time that may be wholly foreign to your normal, everyday life. The first game that made me think differently was Grand Theft Auto 3. The game initially didnt strike me as immersive, but as I played, switching to cars I liked, finding the right radio station, I soon realised I was engrossed in the game, lost in its nuances and trivialities. When Vice City came out, I found myself playing just to drive around and enjoy the environment. In a horror game, the same is true, though instead of longing for a familiarity, I'm ill at ease by it, uncertain and sometimes even terrified by what the game delivers.

Silent Hill 2

The first horror game I played is really the first horror game that affects me still. And while it was recently re-released, I doubt I'll pick it up, not wanting to sully the memories of that terror. Silent Hill 2 was a terrifying adventure. Unlike many modern games that try to pander to a wider audience, Silent Hill 2 caters to the horror audience alone. Others may partake, may find it diverting, but fans of pure horror will appreciate what Silent Hill 2 accomplishes.

The ambiance of the game is the first thing that struck me, the game felt eerie and off-putting from the very beginning. In most games, it is important to be able to see whats going on, hear things as they approach. In Silent Hill 2, a great dense fog descends and permeates every corner of the city. The protagonist, James, returns to this town after receiving a letter from his dead wife. Once he arrives, he is struck by his inability to see too far, needing a small radio, flashlight and his own sense of hearing to navigate away from things as they approach. The game is steeped in trying to disorient you, giving you a map, but half of the places are inaccessible or unreachable until a certain point in the game. One of the many goals of the game was to confuse you, to make you misunderstand the direction you were supposed to go, or the room to enter, the piece of the puzzle to use. It wasn't until I played Resident Evil 4 that I appreciated what Silent Hill had done, giving you more things than you needed, more tools than you could use or carry, purposely forcing you to choose to carry health or ammo, not knowing which you'd use or need more. There was no way to know what was around the next corner.

The enemies in a game are often a good way to gauge whether you will be scared or find it comical or not affecting at all. The real taste of something nasty for me was the nurses in Silent Hill 2. Faceless, dismembered, at times, not fans of light, they roamed the streets and hospitals of Silent Hill, ready with a knife or other implements to slice James in half. In most games, stealth is usually used to move through a level undetected by an enemy, but in Silent Hill, this takes on a whole other level of concern because it is not always clear what will set a nurse off to pursue you. And when one comes, more invariably follow. If that weren't bad enough, Pyramid head makes his debut and is well-nigh un-killable. Like in Amnesia The Dark Descent, the goal when fighting Pyramid head is to run away, something that, at the time, wasn't all that common in gaming. The idea that an enemy was not bothered by your bullets or bat, that you were literally powerless to slow or stop him in any way is what many horror movies base their premise off of.

Silent Hill 2 - scary!

It is in this final realisation that I come to the crux of my argument. I read a lot of horror novels (or I did when I was younger), I see a lot of horror movies as well. What I look for in a good horror piece is whether it affects me long after seeing it. The same is true for a video game did it affect me long after I stopped playing? With Silent Hill 2, however pathetic it may seem to many of you, I had nightmares for a week. Never anything specific, just waking up in a cold sweat, terrified of something coming out of nowhere to get me, as it did in the game. What makes Silent Hill 2 so affecting was the way the entire presentation and gameplay lead you back to the same feeling, the same warning. Each episode, each battle, each encounter, draws you further in, confuses or scares you, but brings the lore, the mythos that is Silent Hill to bear, in front of your eyes whether you're ready or not. Truly, Silent Hill is the king of all horror games, none have surpassed it, none have equalled it, none ever will.

In your opinion! Waahaahaa!

Man, you sound like me when I'm talking about Dark Souls. However, for you, Dark Souls will be your Silent Hill 2. Dark Souls makes me suffocate to this day. Some parts of the game are just too much. Being hundreds of yards underground in pitch black darkness, everything being able to kill you with one hit, slowly creeping though the darkness.... then you hear breathing, from the left, or maybe from the right.

The funny thing about horror games is when I play it with someone and then he shouts from sheer terror even when there's nothing happening in the game yet and then  proceed to laugh at him and call him a wussy even if I myself am trembling with fright. Hehe. I think it's a great icebreaker, playing horror games with someone.

Although i really love horror games, i do not have the guts to play them honestly. I was scared even when i was watching other people play it but, nice article you have here.

@colekhoo I can respect that.  I picked the first one up nervously and haven't looked back ;)

Did I miss something? There seem to be a lot of blogs about horror games recently. I wish I could recommend you one that scared me, but I don't recall ever playing a scary game in my whole life. :(

@Iridescent406 it was a chalk talk assignment - I do love horror games, so I thought I'd participate ;)

I remember Clive Barker's Jericho scaring  me a few times but that was like Doom 3 the first few times when something just pops out but once you know what to look for it's easy to blast em in the lil dark corners.

I am someone who isn't easy to scare so horror games especially modern games hold very little appeal to me but Silent Hill 2 was an exception. a wonderfully disturbing experience that has not been matched since and most likely never will thanks to studios wanting to cater to the mass market.

I found my oa PS2 save card with a save file from 2004 from GTA III and Vice City.   So I can play the games and have access to all of Liberty and Vice Cities.    And Silent Hill 2 is my all time favourite game.....I even have a pyramid head hoody I got off of e-bay a few years back.

I also dug out Siren, Kuon, Haunting Ground, Clock Tower 3, Fatal Frame 3, and just for kicks because I'd forgot I still had them...Red Ninja, Gun, and The Bard's Tale which I found when I dug out my horror games.

oh yeah I also found Silent Hill 3....I know I have SH 4 laying around somewhere but 2 and 3 are the better games so I'm satisfied.

dusting off my PS2 again.....I found a memory card that had not been used to I'm ready to rock

@iowastate I'm so glad I still have my PS2!  I mean, it saves me from having to replay games, but I have so many new ones, I doubt I'll ever get back to the old ones...can't wait to hear what you break out!

@pokecharm I've been playing Haunting Ground.  I did find a memory card with a lot of space left and I can delete same saves from games I don't play or have anymore.         Also Dead Island on the PC while it looks great what I played so far was not up to par with Haunting Ground or the Silent Hills.

@iowastate I remember trying to play that game, Haunting Ground, and getting bored/stuck early on...I never did pick it up again.

Someone here will back me up but Corpse Party (with surround headphones) is the scariest MEDIA I've ever encountered.  Yes, it's an 8 bit game designed on RPG Maker, yes it was a PSP release (now prominently on VitA) but HOLY GOD... there needs to be only one trophy for playing Corpse Party.  It needs to unlock after you've played two chapters and it needs to be called "Herculean Bladder."

I probably won't sleep right tonight just because I said "Corpse Party."

Love Silent Hill 2. The eerie atmosphere, the freaky monster design, the sense of foreboding. But the music is what got me the most, especially the theme that plays when Pyramid Head is stalking around (that industrial melody always creeps me out). The sense of vulnerability and helplessness is also great, that there are things out there, close, that will do unspeakable things to you should they get you. Siren: Blood Curse brought that feeling back to me.

I love horror, and while i love getting scared (which doesn't happen too often these days, sadly; i'm too used to all the tricks) i also like the other side of horror; the freaky monsters and gore, blood on the walls, serial killer with chainsaws. The best is the sense of a twisted imagination. It's why i'm sad the horror section in bookstores has disappeared altogether to give way to the 'paranormal' section, filled with vampire romances and other assorted garbage.

@Katzenbalger hmm, yes, the music!  that is one thing I love, knowing I can't fight and just trying to survive, as you would in reality.

I'm not a huge gore fan, though I will be seeing an exorcism movie this weekend...we shall see how that goes ;)

@pokecharm @Katzenbalger Akira Yamaoaka's contributions to the Silent Hill series were substantial. On SH2 he not only wrote and played the music, he was also responsible for the game's impressive sound design. Later he became producer and primary driving force behind the series.

Some of my favourite moments in SH2 were due to the sound. That pig squeal/baby shriek sound when you enter the lower level of Blue Creek Apartments made what's left of my hair stand on end...

@pokecharm @gba1989 My first impressions of Silent Hill (1) were that it was a Resident Evil ripoff. Sure it was riding the wave of Resi's (at the time) unprecedented wave of popularity (I believe Resident Evil was the first PS1 game to sell over 1 million copies. Quite a feat back then) but there was something different about it that made it hard to put out of one's mind. While Resi was riffing on George Romero and gothic horror, Silent Hill was referencing Francis Bacon and featured a school as a torture dungeon with human skins nailed the walls.

If Resident Evil was your slick, polished horror movie like The Omen, then Silent Hill was your gritty, low-budget shocker like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, something that broke new ground and unsettled it's audience. Sure, it's all tame by today's standards but if you were fortunate enough o play it back when it was a new release then it was truly a memorable experience.

Silent Hill 2, of course, far eclipsed the achievements of it's predecessor.

@Saketume @el_swanno Silent Hill 1 was immediately the stuff of my nightmares when I watched my cousin played it when we were kids.

I got the chance to play it 3 years ago and I gotta admit at that time it still gave me the chills.

I hope you know about "Alone in the Dark" and that it predates RE.

I prefer Silent Hill 1 to Silent Hill 2 for a few reasons.

One is that is was the first and therefor when I played the second game I'd seen most of the ideas already. Not as much chock value. Not much to do about that naturally.

Another thing is that I think the story was better in the first game.

I really like how you get the feeling that all dialog is important.

What happens in the end ties back to what you were told by NPCs in the beginning in a very subtle way. I love that. It's possible the second game was like that too but I don't remember it so it didn't have as much impact on me obviously.

I like the music of the first game better than the second game.

Don't get me wrong though I really like SH2 as well.

They have the same relationship, to me, as the first two Terminator movies.

While the first is technically limited the second is mostly a flashier remake of the first but with less charm. Both are great in their own ways.

Definitely worth playing both of the games though Poke. You NEED to play the first one :)

Yes it's aged but it's still great.

Pro tip: The intro song makes a great ring tune.

@pokecharm

If they refuse to sell it then by all means go ahead and pirate it imo. Then again you'd need a modded console for that.

I'm sure they'll sell it as a download eventually though.

Edit: They actually sell used copies on amazon so maybe your local shops have it too. They sell new ones too but a bit pricey x_X

@Saketume I was hoping it would have been included in that set they released earlier this year, but not so much...

Good read. Silent Hill was always a disturbing series - a subliminal mind f***, to really express how disturbing the series is to me. Silent Hill 2 is what most people think to be the best game in the series. I don't disagree because the story really got to me. Especially those "details" that explain what made the creatures in Silent Hill.

Silent Hill 2 was also a game that had an infamous rape scene. I was shocked that it even passed the censor board. Really disturbing game. That is horror - a feeling of helplessness, a feeling of constant terror, those feelings where your legs and arms start to tighten, adrenaline spiking on and off, your mind starting to fear even the slightest of shadows.

Shame that this gen has had only a few games (Amnesia) that show this same kind of horror.

it is weird people reference that and I honestly don't remember that scene when I was playing it...

I'm very jaded. Not easily scared irl or in movies or games. I like darkness.

Silent Hill 1 & 2 got to me though.

It's not bad at first but if you play by yourself for hours and hours the creepy atmosphere really gets me.

I start feeling uncomfortable and I love that games can still do that to me.

Haven't you played the first Silent Hill btw poke? I like it more than the sequel.

@Saketume that is what got me in SH2 - the atmosphere just got scarier and scarier as the game went on!
