A new job, a new game.
Oh, yesterday was a crazy day. I mean the day before yesterday.
Yesterday I had to go and talk about getting a new job as Java programmer, but the day before yesterday I wasn't yet sure, at what time. My future to be boss had to write me an e-mail first. So, the day before yesterday I should have gone early to bed and be prepared for the big day, as I had to present an "admission" project... But that never happened (i didn't go to bed at 10 or even 12).
I started playing Black Dahlia. Don't be confused, it has nothing to do with an upcoming movie, except that they are both kinda based on real events, which happened in US during the 40s.
I decided to write about BD to continue my "line" of scary games. BD is not in the same league as AvP, 'cause it is a quest (point-and-click adventure) and it doesn't have so much motion, but it is sure creepy as hell!
The game uses the real actors (even Dennis Hopper) and is directed very well. I have to make an introduction, to let you know, what is happening in the game. Pearson, our main hero, starts an investigation of possible Nazi organization's activity in Cleveland and gets stuck in a truly mysterious story. While getting closer to the solution of the mystery, the hero starts getting more and more nightmares (the source of them is explained in the game). So, at one point there is this scene. Our hero wants to examine a manuscript, he touches it, but it is not longer just a parchment, but a black book with Norse runes all over it. Hero opens the book, but the pages are blank... Suddenly, blood starts dripping on the pages. Hero looks up and we see the blood dribbling from his eyes. He starts screaming in high pitch. It gave me shivers!
I watched this moment at 6 in the morning and this scene scared me so much, I decided to quit playing and go to bed. It was the right thing to do, as the next day (the same day already, actually) I received a letter from the future boss to meet him at 12.
At the meeting I was sleepy, with bad hair, but I had a great project to show. So, I have a new job. And I have a great game to play. You should try Black Dahlia. And if you ever checked out Phantasmagoria (either 1 or 2) and was disappointed by it, be sure - Black Dahlia is totally different. It has a great story, it is very well made and puzzles are so clever, I can spend several hours solving them.- Posted Sep 21, 2006 12:37 am PT

The scariest game in my experience...
There are plenty of horror games out there - Resident Evil series, Silent Hill series and so forth, - and I played them all (at least I think so), but my most scariest experience so far was Alien Vs. Predator 2.
Maybe you think I am kidding, but I am really not. Playing as a Marine in AvP2 gave me the creeps of my life.
If you are not acquainted with the game, I will share a bit of my experience.
Imagine this. You are a human being, a marine, armed with pistols and some wimpy rifles, it is dark everywhere and you know that the base is crawling with aliens. The visible radius is not more than 1ft and using night vision is not a very good idea as you can be blinded by alarm lights (which don't give enough light to see anything clearly, but enough light to interfere with your nv goggles). Your only friend and guide is a movement sensor...
You hear a beep. Something is moving up ahead. You slowly approach, but can't see anything. Beeping continues, you start to panic and fire a whole clip into the darkness. Beeping doesn't stop. Abandoning all hopes for survival you rush forward... only to find a chain swinging by wind. This was the source of movement. You relax.
Another situation.
You enter the door, beeping starts, blob on the motion detector monitor is moving towards you. You freeze and prepare to pull the trigger. Blob is almost before you, but your eyes don't see anything... You look up, on the ceiling, and see it. Huge alien, preparing to jump. You know that he will reach you in one jump but can't do anything - fear has taken control of your body. And you scream! And you press the ESC button several times.
And I am telling you, I really screamed. Very loud. I lived at a dormitory at that time and was scaring the hell out of my roommates with my screaming. They even banned me from playing AvG2 while they were present in the room.- Posted Jul 26, 2006 4:48 am PT
