Indie fuels space creativity!
Like a lot of people out there, I am reading more and more about what indie developers are doing, especially I am going through the kickstarter projects. And there is a ton of things to look at!
I actually marvel at how people can generously commit their money to projects without knowing much about those who develop, while at the same time I think this is a step (no - a full marathon!) ahead of what we do when we buy a game "the old fashioned way". Here we get to see the dev team. Hear what they have to excitedly say about the game they want to create. That alone opens up a lot of interaction or even just identification of self with the developers. And I like that a lot.
It is funny that it also re-enforces my own sparkle for game ideas. It occurs to me that I have been having more and more thoughts about how I would love turn-based strategy games to evolve to take into account 3D as a gameplay element, or to re-emphasize people more than they have been. (To that extent, XCOM Enemy Unknown has done good by introducing cinematic elements in the game's rendering of your actions, which is something I was coming towards at my own pace - even if Enemy Unknown has its own set of frustrating elemnts too). I think for instance that a lot of the upcoming highly anticipated space games (such as Star Citizen) are probably not going to appeal to me in spite of their great settings, impressive looks and overall interesting themes. The reason? They do not emphasize on character at all. Indeed, you are not even really visible to your own eyes when you play. When I look back at Star Wars, one of the many reasons this movie was successful is that it tells a universal story of a set of persons, and it puts people first in the images. A lot of the combat sequences include inside cockpit views showing Darky or Luky piloting, or wondering about who is out there and so on. This is something I think we need.
So I wish there was a community to discuss game ideas, and even maybe tighten bonds and in the end decide to set a dev group up, or find ways to push these ideas to the people with a budget. But I don't know of any.
I'll keep digging into that. If you have any good ideas where to discuss these topics, let me know! -

The yellow pad broke
Hey - the topic says it all. After a little bit over 6 months of gameplay, focused first on guitar and vocals, the yellow pad of my Rock Band 2 drum set has finally broken. (The center forms a small depression, and the plastic is actually cracked.) So now is a good time for tinkering. (I had brought it back from the US and thus warranty is not even an option - not to mention it is already over anyway.) Or buy an iron drums... He he. Maybe. Well it has problems with the PS3 so maybe not yet, but once it is solved...
I had no clue I would be so hooked to this game when I bought it. I thought I was crazy to pay that much money for a game, but now I really think this is the game with which I had the most pleasure for my buck.
Quick note: The RB2 hardware is still unavailable heredown.
So it also means that the scope of possibilities broadens now. I could also play another game.
Time for thinking!
