Xbox 360 Game Review: King Kong
King Kong is an easy game to get through, and has some repetitive elements, but it’s intense and thrilling nature makes it worthwhile
King Kong is an action/adventure game, well as close to an action adventure game as you can get. The game doesn’t fit into any genre seeing as how you play an almost military like shooter in which you shot monsters for about 4/5 of the game and the rest you play as Kong which kicks ass!
The Game starts with a trip to Skull Island where movie director Carl wants to shoot a movie. You are hired as a writer along with about 5 others to do various tasks. The crew tries to paddle to shore on smaller boats but gets hit with some rocks that fell from a cliff. You black out and wake up on shore. Welcome to Skull Island.
Game play is unique, with a hint of military shooter that'll stay fresh for the 6 hours you'll play it. There is no HUD but you can press a button to have your player tell you how many rounds he has left. As for Kong game play, it is the epitome of monkey fighting. You only use about 3 buttons but the presentation of what Kong does and the surge of power you get when you snap a V-Rexes jaw in two is amazing.
Graphics are pretty good, but they dont portray he full power the 360 has. There are some jagged moments and the mouth movement is WAY off. The thing that I came away with was the fluent character movement. Kong moves just like a giant gorilla should, but I wouldnt know.
Sound: Again, it's satisfactory during Jack parts but the audio really comes out when you play as Kong. After a kill move he'll let out this scream that'll shake you up. The guns sound like they should, and so does the leading Lady (Most of the time she'll just scream or say OMG!! Gets Repetitive)
Value: This is where the game loses allot of points. The game is way too short, giving you only about 6-8 hours of play. I actually rented the game and stayed out overnight beating it. On the other hand, by the end of the game I found the game play and the story drag along. Throwing spears gets repetitive and maybe 2 or 3 times you think you’re out of the woods when the crazy island throws another monster at you. If it went on any longer the game play would've become so stale you could give up on eating it and just make breadcrumbs. Some people say that the New York part is to short, but c'mon, what’s Kong going to do in NYC? See Mamma Mia?
Overall though, Kong is a fun game that is to short for most players (especially after being hooked to Oblivion) to justify buying it, but renting it over a weekend would be the perfect way to bring some much needed Kong into your life (I know I've been neglecting Kong in my diet). So if you’re a fan of just about any type a action game and love a well presented game rent KK and have your self a good time.- Posted Oct 18, 2006 3:52 pm PT
