My Friends

15Jan 13

Dear GS Homeslices,

Es hare1222 of Steam, or nate1222 of Gamespot, or hare122275 of Youtube. Again, I bring a video blog: hare1222 breaks down PC gaming control options.

In this video, I let those new to the PC gaming scene check out a couple of control options.

Contrary to PC gaming "elitist" twits, not all games play well with mouse & keyboard. 2D platformers, fighting games and even some 3rd person action games actually play better with a gamepad. PC gaming "elitist" cats are gonna hate this video like all Hell. Screw'em.

In this video, I get people aquainted with a pretty versatile and inexpensive USB controller: the Logitech F310. I also hip people to a pretty kickass mouse: the Logitech Trackball/Trackman. Hopefully, this proves useful to those testing the waters in the PC gaming scene.

Take Care

I think most that say a keyboard and mouse is the best control option are likely only on PC playing FPS, RTS, or something else which does work best that way. I doubt they play much of the games where a controller works better.

By no means games are best played with K&M. PC elitists can hug their Keyboards all they want , but truth is most games can be better played using a controller. If there is something I hate more than console fanboys that think themselves as hardcore gamers because they support just one console , are PC elitists that know nothing of gaming because in their stupidity , they can't realise the Keyboard was mainly designed to type WORDS & TEXTS & NUMBERS with it. Not for gaming. There ARE keyboards designed specifically for gaming , but you simply can't beat the fact that some genres are better played with the controller. Even some games from genres like FPS which are played better with the k&m , are sometimes better with the controller.

People should just open their eyes and see that gaming has so much more to offer , idiots that don't want to see the "light" should just quit gaming or simply stop calling themselves hardcore.

Take The Witcher 1 for an example. An RPG that was designed for k&m but compatible with the controller too. I want to point out that the style of play is also a matter of opinion. This game may have been designed with the k&m in mind , but that doesn't mean it's the best way to play it. It may be at least a dozen times with the controller. Ultimately it's just the gamer's opinion  that judges this and this opinion applies just for himself. As we know , we may all have different opinions , even if they differ just 1% , they are different.

@Darnasian Agreed.

Though I prefer m&k for most 1st person and 3rd person games, some games in even THOSE genres are better with a controller.

Case in point: Dungeon Defenders.

It's 3rd person and offers both m&k and Xinput (360, or Logitech F series in X mode) controller support. Ironically, the controller option simply plays better.

Another good example:

Prince of Persia The 2 Thrones. Both m&k and Direct Input (old Logitech and most generic) controller support. Yet, the controller option works a Hell of alot better.

GTA3 is another one. It allows both m&k and both Direct and X input controllers. But the controller, especially Direct Input, is the best option. Plays like the old PS2 version to a tee.

I'm primarily a PC gamer and have been more than 20 years, but the keyboard is certainly not the only way to play games.  Even back in the day I had a Gravis gamepad (much like an SNES controller) for a lot of games.

Thanks for the video and the info.  I've been playing more games on my PC (mainly old school emulator SNES games) that require a controller and right now I'm looking for a suitable controller.

These days I a lot of the games I play I look for a controller option first. Twin Stick shooters, platformers, and more have to have gamepad support or I don't even buy them. On the other hand, there are some that are really bad with a gamepad. I like the PC because hopefully the developers use the option that works best all around knowing full well, anyone gaming on a PC for reals has both at this point.

I only use a controller on my PC for fighting games and racing games. Everything else is absolutely fine for a keyboard and mouse set-up.

FINALLY! Someone who agrees!

For me, Action adventure games (especially games like Devil May Cry and Dark Souls) play so much better using a controller. I really don't get why people insist the mouse and keyboard are the be all and end all in terms of control options.

My last Logitech mouse died so currently using a generic HP USB 2.0 mouse.
