16Oct 07When TV.com first launched it was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed being a contributor. Unfortunately, like most things, life gets in the way and things change and certain hobbies take a back seat. My role as Editor for The IT Crowd and Hustle have taken a back seat over the past year simply because I've been too busy with work and what not to devote the attention it deserves.
So today I retired as Editor for both shows. It was a hard decision to make, because I love both of the shows dearly and to be considered the TV.com editor for those shows was quite an honor. That being said, both series deserve a better editor than I've been over the past year, so it was high time that I step down.
I still think TV.com is a great site and I applaud all of the contributors who continue to make this the go to site for television. It's unfortunate that I'm unable to find the time to be more active, but it was fun while it lasted.
Take care everyone!- Posted Oct 16, 2007 8:32 am PT

13Apr 07Looks like I got bumped up to level 28 "Disco Stu". I don't know exactly what I did to deserve the bump, because I haven't been active very much up until today. Today I cleaned up the "Hustle" episode guide, so that should move me past the current 1%.

12Nov 06Level Up
I'm only 5% away from moving up to the next level, 28 Disco Stu, but I think I'll wait until the update is complete this evening before making anymore submissions. You know, just to be safe and all.
- Level 28 - Disco Stu.
Butterfly Emblem
Call me an emblem junkie, but I was checking to see which emblems I was missing and I happened to notice that I am 2 friends away from the 20 needed for the Butterfly icon.
- Social Butterfly (User has over 20 friends).
Board Lover
I'm 110 posts away from earning the "Board Lover" emblem.
- Board Lover (500 forum posts).
Contribution Emblem
I'm 305 submissions away from the next contribution emblem.
- Master of the Contributions (2000 Contributions)
I don't see me breaking into this next level anytime soon, but I know it'll happen one day.- Posted Nov 12, 2006 2:24 pm PT

9Nov 06I've become a bit of a fan of the show Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team.
Is it because it has excellent writing? No. Is it because the story lines are so deep and compelling? Ha! No.
Is it because the series is nothing but images of cheerleaders dancing, stretching and running? y e a h . . .
I wasn't a big fan of Baywatch, which was built around watching a bunch of beach bunnies, but for some reason this series really resonates with me. Maybe it's because it's drawing on my pre-pubescent days when I had a Dallas Cowboys poster hanging on my wall. I don't know. All I DO know is that it's a lot of fun to watch.

6Nov 06Eager to finally get off of Level 27, I made another 20 or so submissions, most of which have been approved. However, I'm still at 80%. Did the update run this weekend?

4Nov 06I've been so busy this year that I haven't spent much time on TV.com making submissions. It's kind of ironic that during this time I've been stuck at the "Shark Jumper" level. Well, over the past two days, I cleared out my Gmail account and made a bunch of submissions err.. contributions and moved from 66% to 80%. Considering I made roughly 25 contributions, that's not too bad of a bump.
I figured that I wouldn't be seeing a new icon until I made it to level 28, but this morning I noticed the following icon:
User has submitted news links via the User Link Submission System.
Although it feels good to be a contributing member again, I feel a little out of step. There are so many changes around here, like the user links thing, that it's going to take a little while till I feel comfortable with how things work again.- Posted Nov 4, 2006 5:21 am PT

24Aug 06A project that I've been working on for over a year has finally taken shape and launched! It's a weekly podcast called Simply Digital. With my co-host, "Analog Dave", we discuss a single topic regarding technology and try to break it down so that it's easy to understand. I guess you could call it a tech podcast for the non-geek.
The first episode is on "podcasts", which at first glance may seem a bit redundant to talk about podcasts IN a podcast. However, since Simply Digital is a podcast, what better way to kick things off than by breaking down this new technology?
All the details, including show notes, for Episode 1 can be found at this link. We've included an embedded player, so you can even listen to the podcast directly from the site. If you prefer a dedicated "podcatcher", you can subscribe to the podcast in iTunes, Odeo, Google, or your Podcatcher of choice via standard RSS.
This is our first episode, but I'd still love to get any feedback you may have. Constructive criticism is always a good thing, so if you have some thoughts on the show, positive or negative, I'd love to hear them!- Posted Aug 24, 2006 5:53 am PT

28Jul 06Now that TV.com has added the ability to add blogs to shows and people, I'm swimming in blogs now!

I had already created a blog for "Hustle" a few weeks ago, and today I created a blog for "The IT Crowd". While I was at it, I also created a forum and blog for the actor John Mese as well.
Then the thought occurred to me, should I do the same for all the people that I am Editor for? Surely some of the news that I post in the "Hustle" blog could go into the actor's blog instead. I guess the question is, how many blogs to I want to manage? I'm Editor for 6 people and 2 shows. That would make 9 blogs total (including this one) and 8 forums. That seems like a lot to me, but I'm still on the fence.
I suppose if points were given for posting in the blogs, then maybe that would tip the scales. I haven't been around enough to know if this is indeed the case and I'm too busy right now to do the research, so maybe someone can educate me?
What are other Editors doing?- Posted Jul 28, 2006 9:08 am PT

9Jul 06I came across this great blog post by studog2961 which lists all of the icons that are out there to collect. There are two chat icons I'll never get, but there are a few that might be in my future.
- Master of the Contributions (2000 Contributions). I have 1,688 as of this post.
- Board Lover (500 forum posts). I have 332 as of this post.
- his user has one of the top 100 point scores in the community. I'm in the top 500, but I don't think I'll ever make the top 100.
Of course there are level icons too, but those three will be some of the milestones that may lie in my future.

7Jul 06I've been away quite a bit here recently. I've been busy with projects at work and new endeavors of my own, which I should be able to talk about soon. So this evening I stopped in to check the queue and was quite surprised that I had 3 submissions waiting for me! While trying to approve them, I found that a lot of things have changed.

1. Opera Doesn't Work With TV.com
It seems that Opera 9 and TV.com don't play well together. I haven't dug into the issue, but either Opera is doing something weird, or TV.com is and my bet is on TV.com. Web standards isn't something that TV.com has been all that concerned with in the past.
2. There Are Show Blogs!
The forums have been my only outlet for news and cool information regarding the shows that I edit. Imagine my surprise when I saw a "Blog" tab in the sub-navigation for "Hustle". I scrounged around until I found where to activate the feature and immediately started the "Hustle" Blog.
All I can say is WOO FREAKIN' HOO BABY! This is fantastic news and just goes to show how the TV.com staff respond to user requests. May be old news to you guys, but I'm stoked!
3. I Have A New Icon
Although I made a few submissions this evening, I haven't been doing much during this "off-season". So the idea that I'd have a new icon was the farthermost thing from my mind. So I was a little taken a back when I saw that I had the following in my panel:
= This user was a member during the first month of TV.com.
I knew that I had been on board pretty soon after the launch, but I had no idea it was in the first 30 days. How sweet is that?- Posted Jul 7, 2006 8:52 pm PT

22May 06It's been awhile since I posted to the blog, so I thought an update was in order. My excuse is the same of most people - just been too busy. Looks like it's going to stay this way for the rest of the week, so don't look for too much more from me.

I'll still be checking my queue and the forums daily though, so no worries on your submissions or questions.
As always, if you're looking for more information, please don't forget my main blog at mashby.com.- Posted May 22, 2006 10:36 am PT

9May 06Last week's "Lost" episode was a MAJOR milestone in the popular series and was just another example of just how smart the producers are behind the show.
I don't want to post any spoilers here, so I won't go into detail, but suffice to say that not one, but TWO major events happened this episode. The best part of it though was that there was zero hype on ABC leading up to the event. When advertising for ER is constantly drumming the drama drum that something major is going to happen on their show, it's a breath of fresh air to have any marketing schtick to give anything away. It came as a complete shock and as such it had maximum impact on me and just confirms why I watch the show. Brilliantly played. Absolutely freakin' brilliant.
That's not to say that "Lost" doesn't do any marketing. It does, but it does it in unique and exciting ways. Remember the script that Sawyer was reading? The one that Jack threw into the fire? Well, it's called Bad Twinand you can buy the book at Amazon.com.
The entire marketing of the book is tied into the story line of the series and I can see myself actually buying it.
Not all of the "Lost" marketing though is tied into franchising the brand and generating money. Some of their efforts are just fun, like the The Hanso Foundation web site. It's a bit of a bloated flash site, but it does have some fun bits to it. For example, try to send Joop a message, or try to sign up for the newsletter and then enter "breakingstrain" as the password. There's other sites that the team of "Lost" have created, but this is just one example of how their marketing efforts aren't just business as usual.
And it's clear that the team behind "Lost" are reaping huge rewards for thinking outside the box and raising the bar in terms of creating a show that has a higher perception of the intelligence of its fans. I for one appreciate it greatly.- Posted May 9, 2006 2:04 pm PT

3May 06It used to be that whenever I would make a blog post, I would post my stats as well. I'd list my overall points, submission data, show point totals and person totals. Since the release of TV.com 2.0 though, it looks like that data is posted for me.
If you look at the "Stats" block on the right side of this blog, you'll see most of what I was posting by hand. The only items missing are percentages, and show and people totals. That data isn't all that interesting and since it can be found elsewhere, I think I'll stop posting my stats manually.
I'm actually thankful that I don't have to do it anymore.

30Apr 06Yesterday, I lamented how I don't expect to gain any new emblems anytime soon. The next closest emblem that I'll probably obtain will be this one:
- For writing over 500 forum posts.
Today I hit 300 posts after posting several news stories in the "Hustle" Forums. I don't think I'll be reaching the magic 500 mark anytime real soon, but I suppose that IS progress.

27Apr 06After doing my post on emblems, I started looking at what the next target would be for me and I have to say, I don't think I'll be getting any new ones soon.
I have a couple hundred posts to make in the forums until I get the surfer dude. I'm about 3500 submissions away from the Contributor Sensei and it will be even longer before I'm in the Top 100 club.
So I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled for a new chat to come up.

17Apr 06A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how I thought I was put on the spot due to the extra scrutiney being placed on the Top 20 shows. If TV.com chose the Most Popular list, then I was OK, but if they chose the Highest Rated, then I was going to have to get busy on cleaning up "Hustle". Turns out they're using the Most Popular, so I'm OK.
I was eagerly awaiting a reply in the comments on Waltmor's post, but then someone reminded me that there's a whole forum just for Editors. Doh! Not only that, but they were discussing Waltmor's post in great detail and offered a lot of insight.
Here I am plugging along, totally oblivious to the sub-community out there just waiting for me to jump in and join in the discussion. So if you're an Editor for a person, or a program, don't forget this wonderful resource like I did.

10Apr 06I'm a big fan of the Moleskine journals and when I saw Danny Blue (Marc Warren) using the Reporter version on last Friday's episode of "Hustle", it was a real treat.
Since I'm also a regular reader of the web site Moleskinerie, I snapped a couple of screenshots and submitted them to Armand. In less than an hour, Armand posted them on his site at this link. Woo hoo!
You know, I manage a LOT of web sites, but I still get a tickle out of seeing something I've submitted appear on someone else's site. I hope I never lose that feeling.

8Apr 06After reading Waltmor's latest post Top 20 Show episode guides must set the standard, it's got me a little worried. Basically, Waltmor is saying that those shows in the Top 20 should be the best they can be. That's certainly reasonable and expected, because it only makes sense that the top 20 shows are going to see the most traffic, so they should be the best guides out there.
So why does this put me on the spot? Well, if you look at the Most Popular list it doesn't, but if you go by the Highest Rated list, then "Hustle" is on the list. Why is this a problem? Well, to put it simply, I don't think the guide is up to snuff.
I had hoped that once the new season had started the submissions would begin to flow again, but that hasn't happened. In fact, there hasn't been a single submission for the series for the past three episodes. So this puts the burden on me to do all the submissions. The problem with that, is the method that I use to collect all my trivia, allusions, etc. is somewhat forensic in nature and thus takes a while to do. What I do is create a detailed Recap of an episode and as I go through it, I find all sorts of interesting submission material. It's a wonderful way to collect submissions, but it's slow as hell - each recap takes about 4 hours to complete.
So if I'm under the gun by being in the Top 20 list, I'm going to have to seriously knuckle down and get through some of these recaps. I'm currently 1/3 of the way through the first episode of season 3, but I may have to jump ahead to Episode 5 and work my way back.
I suppose it's a good thing Hustle only has six episodes per season!

6Apr 06Be sure to tune your televisions to CBS this evening to watch "CSI". My good buddy, John Mese will be appearing as Gordon Wallace in tonight's episode Spellbound. I've seen a few previews for the show and you can clearly, albeit quickly, see John being interrogated. I don't know if this means he's playing the "bad guy" or not, but he's sure to get plenty of face time, which is fantastic.
John's been having a great run over the past year or so. He was on "Law and Order" in the episode Acid, which then lead to a role on "Bones" in The Superhero In The Alley. Before all that, he was on "Medium" in the episode Suspicions And Certainties, which was a brilliant role. It was very dark but VERY funny.
Of course all of these appearances are nothing new for John. He's been very active for many years out in LA. Including starring roles on "Reasonable Doubts", "Courthouse", and the cult hit "American Gothic", just to name a few. What's different for me now is that John let's me know ahead of time when he'll be making an appearance, so I can be sure not to miss it.
So be sure to tune in tonight to CSI!- Posted Apr 6, 2006 10:37 am PT
