The Horrors Of Black Friday
As many of you know last Friday was Black Friday and for those of my friends that aren't from the US, Black Friday is pretty much the day after Thanksgiving where we Americans wake up at 4 a.m. and go stand in line with other people at stores like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, JC Penny, and other stores to get deals on certain stuff. Last Friday myself I didn't bother to wake up at 4 a.m. because I just can't wake up at that time, but that doesn't mean I wasn't going to go see what deals I could get myself. So I woke up at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. Yeah I'm not much of a morning person. Ate my breakfast, got dressed and when to my local mall to see what was up.
I don't think I should have when because as I got to the Mall it was chaos! The darn parking lot was almost full, but lucky I found a parking space. I decided to go check out Barnes and Noble once again since I got some pretty good deal there last time. As I was approaching the door leading into there, something not very nice happened to me. I don't know if I wasn't paying attention or not, but I got a nice face full of the door. It was pretty loud and you could hear the WHAM! I staggered back a few feet from the hit and I was surprised that no one noticed. I on the other hand didn't get hurt or have any marks on my face, but after a few minutes I had one heck of a headache.
So anyway aside from that little accident I had one heck of a time at my mall battling the crowd of Black Friday. I did get a few good deals some stuff, but I can't tell you want it is because its Christmas gifts for my family. I was still able to get what I wanted despite getting out late. Black Friday is cool and all, but its like a human zoo. Everyone couldn't give a darn about you. Overall next time I go shopping I'll wait until the last minute as Black Friday is to hectic even for me! That's all for now everyone! See you on the boards and unions.

Have a Merry Christmas as well from Robotnikclaus!

Weekly Purchases #4: DVD and Books Edition
Hey everyone! How's it going? Its that time of week again where I share with you what I bought within the last week. So let's get to it shall we? Most of the stuff I got was at Barnes and Noble.
Army Of Darkness: Screwhead Edition

As many of you know I'm a big Army Of Darkness fan and when I saw that they had a new edition of the DVD out I couldn't help but buy this version as my other version that was on DVD was scratched and didn't work. I'm glad to pick this one up.
Doom: Knee Deep In The Dead

I was surprised that my Barnes and Noble carried this book, but after reading it for a few pages I got hooked on it and bought it. Thankfully the books of Doom stay much closer to the games than the movie did. Got this discounted at $4.99.
Naruto Manga Volume 46

I usually read the Naruto manag mostly online, but since the Pein arc has been my favorite arc so far I had to pick this one up since it was full of omg moments. I picked this up for about $9.99.
Batman: The Animated Series Volume 2

One of the best series I watched while growing up. They had a special on Batman: TAS volumes and of course I couldn't resist and picked up volume 2 of this great series for $19.99.
Sonic The Hedgehog #206

Finally! Barnes and Noble had issue 206 of Sonic The Hedgehog and things are really heating up as Sonic himself faces off against the Iron King himself! This is going to be a great battle. Picked this up for $2.50.
Well that's all I pretty much picked up this week. I'll see everyone later and have a great Thanksgiving if you celebrate it!

PlayStation Doom Review

PlayStation Doom Main Theme:
Here's my detailed review for the PlayStation port of Doom. The closest you can get to the PC version:
The year was 1995 and the PlayStation had just come out and didn't have to many games at launch and Doom was one of the first games to be launched with the system and it was a success selling well over 1 million copies and to this day the PlayStation port holds up better than the other ports.
The story in Doom. Is there a story? There's not much of a story to Doom and pretty much it borrows from the PC version. You're a marine as tough as they come. You were sent to Phobos because you hurt your commanding officer for disobeying a direct order to fire on civilians. Your days on Phobos are boring and consist of watching restricted flicks and sucking dust in the rec room. All of a sudden all hell breaks lose on Phobos, everyone is killed expect you and now its up to you as the player to blast your way through 59 levels to kick those sorry demons in their behinds all the way back to hell. They'll pay for messing with you and killing your pet rabbit Daisy.
Let's talk about the graphics. For their time in 1995 they looked pretty good and by today's standards they don't look the best, but if you can get around that then you're in for a hellishly good time. The PlayStation port of Doom received an upgrades of sort and that was to the graphics and sound, but let's talk about the enhanced graphics first. It got ambient lighting when was suppose to help the game seem scary in some parts and it does a good job of making you scared sometimes when you least expect a Spectre to sneak up on you and scare you. The only problem with the lighting is the fact that it makes it so hard to see in some of the levels. You'll usually end up getting hit by an unseen enemy who you can't see and this will most likely frustrate you to no end, but you can remedy that by turning up your TV's brightness. On to sound. This is where the PlayStation version of Doom got the biggest upgrade and that was to the sound. Instead of using the original sound effects and music that was created by Bobby Prince, Midway called in Aubrey Hodges to compose new music and sound effects for the game and its probably some of the best sound effects for Doom. Everything sounds so much better in the PS port from the sounds of the shotgun going off to the groans of the demons and their death screams as well. Its limited by today's standards yes, but it was scary enough to make Doom seem even more scarier and it worked. A lot of people complain about the newer sound effects included and it would have been nice to see an option to include the original effects and music, but I can live with it.
Last, but now least game play. Doom is pretty simple when it comes to game play and pretty much boils down to going from on area to the next blasting demons that dare get in your way and collecting keys that open up doors as well. Some people might find it annoying to have to keep doing this, but for people that can put up with it, its some of the best gaming you'll ever have and with 59 levels its sure to keep you busy for a weekend.
The only complain I have about the game besides the lighting and some of the music is the graphics. Now as you can tell this version is based on the Jaguar code and almost every version used it. It doesn't take away from the game, but the PC version was much more colorful and had better textures. The Jaguar version used a lot of the Doom 2 textures and it made the game seem bland. If the SNES version of Doom was able to use the PC textures than other versions could have as well. Other than that the PS port of Doom is great.
The controls in the game work very well and can be customized to the way you play so it earns some points for that. My suggestion for the control scheme in Doom is go with X for attack, O for use, Square for strafe on and Triangle for speed as this feels the most natural for the game. The game uses a password system which can get annoying as you'll most likely lose the passwords, but since Doom was released in 1995 I can forgive it for that. All in all the PlayStation port of Doom is the best around and if you're a fan of Doom then there's no questioning you should get this port which combines Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 together.
Overall Doom on the PlayStation scores an 8.5 for being able to be the closet port of Doom on a console within sacrificing too much of the original game.- Posted Nov 22, 2009 8:34 pm PT
