My Top Ten Favorite Current* Series

*On Hiatus/Airing/Returning/Status Unknown with at least two completed seasons (the true test, IMO, should actually be three seasons, but I'll only be left with a top six)

    10. 24
    09. Chuck
    08. Damages
    07. Lost
    06. House
    05.
    Criminal Minds
    04.
    In Treatment
    03. Dexter
    02. Spooks (aka MI-5)
    01.
    Breaking Bad

Quick Notes: I'll probably add more of my thoughts (and links to guides) later. Apart from the usual reasons for loving a show (i.e. captivating dialogue, brilliant acting, unique and entertaining characters, interesting storylines, etc.), I noticed overlapping/similar elements among my favorites --

    • protagonist leading a double life (1, 2, 3, 9, maybe 10)
    • my love for spy stories (Alias is on my top 10 shows of all-time; one of my favorite cartoons: Spy vs. Spy -- yes, I'm that literal; although I'm not much into Bond -- James Bond, not S&M bond, not that I'm into that either!)
    • non-scifi/fantasy (except for Lost, which makes this show special for me)
    • preference for serialized over non-serialized/procedural shows
    • dark, disturbing (sometimes depressing) dramas (which makes Chuck special, and Friends too!)
    • not sure if this is relevant... no voiceovers/narration (except for Dexter and quotes from Criminal Minds)

Supernatural would've made it if their S1-S3 had the same quality as S4/S5 (reverse scenario for The Office). Medium, Big Love, Grey's Anatomy, and comedies TBBT, 30 Rock, HIMYM are somewhere in the Top 20 (I haven't really thought this through).

Among the 10, I'd say it's only In Treatment that is hard to recommend. It's just a psychotherapist and a patient (five different cases per season/one per day of the week) talking for about 20+ minutes every episode. No special effects. No non-stop action. Not much camera movement. And yet it's still one of the most engrossing TV series I've seen in years. I've actually seen both seasons twice, and I fell in love with the show even more after the second screening.

If you're into NCIS, Alias, The Unit, and 24, I highly recommend Spooks. Just don't check their IMDB listing during the course of watching the series. You'll regret it if you do. Breaking Bad is Weeds on meth (not that I've tried the stuff)! Bryan Cranston winning back-to-back Emmys (as Glenn Close did for Damages) is no fluke. All the rest, I assume you're familiar with.

Which among the ones above make it to your current top 10? Enjoy the coming weekend, everyone!

I know I said my next blog was going to be about my Top 10 Favorite Current Series, but random & pointless trumps planned & organized everytime.

Someone sent me these telegrams this past week. Guess which shows are included in the correspondence. One 'STOP' = one show.

EDIT: I counted 41 'STOP's. You can "cheat" (use TV.com, google, TV sites) all you want. Once you figure out why the telegrams are blocked that way, it's much easier to guess the shows.

Laziness got the better of me, so it took me a while to follow through with the pilot mini-reviews.

Quick Update: Aside from Glee and Modern Family, I wish to add Community as a new comedy series recommendation. After a shaky pilot, the show keeps getting better and funnier. I especially liked the 3rd episode ("Introduction to Film") -- Abed (Danny Pudi) and Professor Whitman (John Michael Higgins) were just hilarious!

DRAMA PILOTS (in reverse order of preference):

If you're forced to live on a desert island and can only watch three new drama shows while there, I highly recommend the last three on this list! I'm too lazy to write down what the shows are about and my airline seating rating for each. Just know that if you're flying with the first five, don't forget to bring your chutes in case you plan on bailing early. If I were you, I won't even bother stepping onto the plane now. I don't know how, but you can always board when it's flying steady past all the turbulence. [If you're lost with the clumsy airplane metaphors, I can't blame you.]

Amidst the jazillion crime procedurals on TV, a new crime show has to bring something new to the table for it to stand out. Upon seeing the previews, I was already skeptical of this show about identifying John/Jane Does and bringing them home to their respective families. It doesn't necessarily focus on solving the crime (CSI) or preventing another crime (Criminal Minds). The redemption lies in giving a name to the "forgotten" so their families and friends can pay their final respect. I was (at the least) expecting to be moved once the victim's loved-ones achieved some sort of closure, but somehow the pilot failed in this regard as well (at least for me). I'll feel bad for Christian Slater if ABC ends up canceling the show (which is more than likely). I even liked his canceled series from last year (My Own Worst Enemy) much more. I guess it won't be long until this Bruckheimer show lives up to its title.

If you've had enough of the teen-falling-for-conflicted-vampire drama, then you may want to steer clear of this series. Some people have compared it to Twilight although the books from which this show is based came way before Stephenie Meyer's vampire-that-glitters novel series. It was actually a decent pilot, IMHUBO (in my humiliating unbiased opinion). But then again, I can probably stand more crap and cheese than the average TV viewer. On the other hand, I'm not saying the show is crappy or cheesy. So what am I saying exactly? The show has an audience, definitely, and the story and characters are easy to get into. But I have to say no to catching VD, for now. I still have True Blood and Gossip Girl to fill my vampire and teenage drama needs, each viewed separately.

CBS joined the medical drama bandwagon and tried to put a different spin by featuring transplant surgeons at the forefront -- "tried" being the operative word. It's another decent pilot from another safe show. There was nothing awful about it, but then, there was nothing special about it either. And there are only so much just-okay shows you can put on your proverbial plate before you feel the need to puke before taking another spoonful. I also felt Alex O'Loughlin was sort of struggling with his new fangless gig. The show will be better served if it's treated as an ensemble TV series (much like with Patrick Dempsey on Grey's Anatomy) rather than a character-driven show that focuses on its lead (such as the case for Hugh Laurie on House).

The pilot episode opened with an explosive first 6-8 minutes and had me mostly on the edge of my seat for about halfway thru the episode. But then it got real boring real fast after that. It's a medical drama (yes, another one of those) about a San Francisco medical rescue team, so much of the action takes place outside the hospital. Its approach in differentiating itself from all the other medical shows is to provide thrilling, engrossing, and high-powered sequences on the field week after week. Color me cynical, but I don't think a network would risk shelving out the required budget to sustain a costly and a possibly good show. I'm neither holding my breath nor caring enough to cross my fingers for a full-season pickup for this series.

First few minutes into the pilot, my thought bubble read, "Ooh, it's Hawthorne 2.0!". It's hard not to compare when you see several of the characters being carbon copies of the ones from the other nurse-centric show - an overzealous head nurse with a hint of misguided messianic complex (Taylor Schilling), a dashing doctor having a special bond with said nurse (James Tupper), a no-nonsense hospital administrator who disapproves of the nurse's actions, and a young, inexperienced newbie (Michelle Trachtenberg). However, IMO, the show is an upgrade from its predecessor as the lines are less cheesy and the characters are less irritating. Since I already watch and still enjoy Grey's Anatomy, House, and Royal Pains, I will have to pass on this one.

Following in the footsteps of an extremely popular and successful show such as NCIS is a tough act, but after seeing the pilot, I believe this spin-off has enough juice to keep old fans tuning in and draw new fans as well. Some viewers are looking for the sexual tension which existed between Kate and Tony or Ziva and Tony in the original. I think it's good that they're trying to veer away from that and are going in a new direction. IMO, the URST element isn't as exciting when everyone else is doing it (Bones, Warehouse 13, Castle)! LL Cool J and Chris O'Donnell, as co-alpha males, have great chemistry and can get better as the season progresses. The rest of the pack have their moments in adding humor to the show. Also, the series isn't into too much lab forensics, which honestly, is a refreshing sight for this type of show.

I never really knew what this series was about before I viewed the pilot. I didn't even check out the trailer first. So it was a pleasant surprise seeing that it was a legal drama with a dash of family drama. Having loved David E. Kelley's courtroom dramas/dramedies The Practice, Ally McBeal, and Boston Legal, I'm excited that a potentially high-caliber show like TGW is on the air (no disrespect to Raising the Bar). Julianna Margulies does very well as the wife of a disgraced district attorney. She is forced to work as a junior associate after her husband is sent to prison. The cast has a good mix of veteran actors (Chris Noth, Christine Baranski, Josh Charles) and young talents (Archie Panjabi, Matt Czuchry, Graham Phillips). And while the legal case tackled in the pilot may not be too complex, the writing was exemplary and the performances praise-worthy. I can see some Emmy (even Memmy) nominations for this series in 2010.

It's one of the most popular new shows this fall -- with good reason. With all the hype surrounding the show, I'm glad that the pilot didn't disappoint. Although much of the good stuff is already revealed in the previews and trailers, it was interesting to see how the characters are all connected and what their initial reactions were to their visions. One can't help but be intrigued with what's coming in between now and April 29, 2010. I liked Joseph Fiennes (whom I remember most from Shakespeare in Love) and Sonya Walger (whom I'll miss as Penny on Lost) as lead actors and can't complain with the rest of the cast. With Caprica, V, The Prisoner (mini-series), Day One (mini-series), and Lost's final season still to come, this promises to be an exciting season for sci-fi fans. Clicky here for the preview of AMC's The Prisoner.

New Drama Shows Update: Apart from doing well ratings-wise, the last three shows on the list have aired good, if not great, follow-up episodes these past two weeks.

    SHOUT-OUTS:

    • Anna (banannie), who left the site nearly two months ago, sends her best to everyone! She says she's busy with college and hockey and misses all of you (or more specifically, the ones she knows).
    • If you haven't greeted Jess (pirateJESS) a happy birthday yet, then you're three days late! And the cakes don't taste as good. Go greet her a belated or wait another 362 days.
    • Do you like Callum Keith Rennie (Battlestar Galactica, Californication, Harper's Island) enough to at least give him an 8.5 or higher TV.com rating? "YES!" Then head over to Ela (mafalada) and Daria's (12678) blogs to support their A-Star-for-CKR campaign (I just invented the name! ).
    • Have a first look at Tina's (nofeartina) first baby and wish her well on her pregnancy.
    • Make a not-too-fashionably late appearance in the 2nd Supernatural Club Meeting presided over by Shane (charmed1102).

For this review of comedy pilots, I'm actually using sentences rather than my much-preferred bullets. So thanks in advance if you plan on reading everything. Although I only highly recommend the last two shows on this list, especially to those with limited room in their TV scheds, you may want to check out the other show mini-reviews as well. Not that I should be listened to or anything. I tried to be unbiased towards the shows whose guides I edit.

"COMEDY" PILOTS (in reverse order of preference):

    (pilot episode recap now available)

What's It About?: Billie gets knocked up after a one night stand with a much younger guy named Zack. She decides to keep the baby and invites Zack to move in with her.

While the premise isn't all that fresh and sounds a lot like Knocked Up (Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl), the pilot script elicited a few laughs from me, no louder than the ones on the laugh track. Jenna Elfman (Dharma & Greg) is her usual quirky self. Ashley Jensen is the bright spot on the show as Jenna's best friend and reminds me of Melissa McCarthy's character on Samantha Who? Zack's buddies were alright. They didn't do much except play video games, drink beer, and use the urn of Billie's grandma as a smoking device.

Verdict: It's a far cry from Samantha Who? And It doesn't seem to offer something new. I also don't expect the show to last that long, unless it consistently benefits from being part of CBS' solid comedy
    Monday block.

    Airline Seating:
Economy Class, Poor Seat, the one near the Emergency Exits

    What's It About?
: Courteney Cox = the Cougar in Town

Sorry, I got too lazy with that one, but it's a fair summary of the premise, right? Maybe it's just me, but I don't find Courteney Cox all that hot, so that pretty much should ruin the show for me. Bossy and OC Monica just keeps popping in my head. But the show has more to offer than just Cox's supposed hotness. I did like some of the supporting characters like her neighbor Christa Miller-Lawrence ("Go do disgusting things to that boy.") and
    son played by Dan Byrd.

Verdict: I'm on the fence with this one. It will all depend on how overloaded my overloaded TV schedule turns out to be. And some are saying Cougar Town's likely headed to Cancel Town, so I'll just have to wait and see.

Airline Seating: Economy Class, Standard Seat, Cougar-baked cookies and milk for food

    (pilot episode recap now available)

What's It About?: Jeff Winger, whose law degree has been revoked, and a bunch of misfits attend Greendale Community College and form unlikely bonds during the course of their stay.

Don't expect a laugh-out-loud type of comedy from this show. I guess dry and awkward humor is the "in" thing when it comes to comedies these days. Joel McHale shines in his role as Jeff and has an able supporting cast around him. And having Chevy Chase among your lead actors is a plus. Nothing much can be gathered from the pilot except getting familiar with the characters using a Spanish cl
ass study group as its setting.

Verdict: I'm usually more open to trying out comedies than dramas, so I'm sticking with this show. And Gillian Jacobs (Britta) is oh-so-pretty, so how can I not watch the show? Kidding! It has stiff competition in its Thursday slot, so not getting the NBC axe will be a challenge.

Airline Seating: Economy Class, Standard Seat, Surrounded by weird and noisy passengers

    (pilot episode recap now available)

What's It About?: Brooklyn writer Jonathan Ames goes on Craigslist and posts an ad as an unlicensed private detective. He then takes on cases involving missing persons, domestic issues, etc.

If you're a fan of droll humor, then this might be a comedy series you'd grow to love. IMO, it showcases an amazing lead cast (Schwartzman, Galifianakis, Danson) and the characters play well off of each other. Ames' first case is not that interesting, but fits well with the show's brand of humor. The show features New York City, particularly Brooklyn, as its backdrop and plays loads of indie music. Oh, and I love the opening credits!

Verdict: I'm neither disappointed nor too thrilled with the pilot, but this one's a keeper. I'm hoping Galifianakis is used more in future episodes. I'm also looking forward to some familiar names (Kristen Wiig, Oliver Platt, Parker Posey) as guest stars. It's on HBO, so the chances of it staying on air are higher (I hope).

Airline Seating: Premium Economy Class, Good Seat, Superb audio selection, Semi-famous celebrities as co-passengers, NY Flights only

    (pilot episode recap now available)

What's It About?: Three seemingly ordinary women from the town of Eastwick wish (on a coin) for their lives to change. A mysterious man arrives, helps them discover their hidden powers, and brings forth unfortunate events in their town.

After reading several negative reviews about the show, I'm pleasantly surprised that it isn't as bad as they say. For me, it wasn't even bad at all for a pilot episode. I like all three lead actresses and Paul Gross does very well as Van Horne. It's been ages since I've seen the original film version on video, so I really can't compare the pilot to the movie. The film is only their starting point and hopefully, they have enough material to make this series work.

Verdict: I have a soft spot for small-town dramedies/dramas (Ed, Gilmore Girls, Everwood) and this show fits the bill for me. And who am I to resist Lindsay Price' sexy librarian look? The pilot fared exceptionally well in its Wednesday slot, so here's hoping that trend continues. Eastwick's my guilty-pleasure series for Fall 2009.

Airline Seating: Premium Economy Class, Good Seat, expanded legroom and lower recline, hot FAs

    What's It About?
: A ragtag High School glee club.
Underdogs and Optimism. Music, Singing, and Dancing. Finding One's Place in the World. Triumph of the Human Spirit (okay, maybe that's going too far ).

The story lines aren't forced and not cheesy at all, unlike in so many other high school/teen shows. The characters, while somewhat animated (I believe they should be), are realistic and have heart. And the musical numbers make you want to sing and dance in your living room/bedroom. Or at least snap your fingers and tap your feet on the floor. Just check out this clip of their rendition of "Don't Stop Believing". (pardon the bad audio)

Verdict: As Will says, "it's a nine. We want a ten." Actually, I'm fine with a nine. It's hard to find a show these days that can score a nine, IMO. And I don't think any show deserves a 10. It's like saying it has absolutely zero flaws. So nine's really good! I'm not a big fan of musicals and I haven't got a single musical bone in my body, but I've grown to love this show!

Airline Seating: Business Class, Good Seat, Top-of-the-line A/V amenities, Fabulous in-flight entertainment

What's It About?: It's about three unique families: a couple that's been married for 16 years and has three adolescent kids, a 50-something guy recently married to a much younger Hispanic woman who has an 11-year old son, and a gay couple who just adopted a baby.

Even with a limited time (20+ mins) and 11 principal cast members, they did extremely well with fleshing out most of the characters, for a pilot episode. Phil (Ty Burrell) as the "cool dad" is my favorite character so far. Julie Bowen, who plays his wife, is hot even without trying. Gay couple Cameron and Mitchell provide the biggest laughs. Manny is a teddy bear! You just want to hug him. And his letter in the end was so sweet and sincere, even for an 11-year old. I also loved that Lion King-ish scene.

Verdict: It's the best new comedy for me this fall. This is definitely one I can recommend to most as a must-see comedy.

Airline Seating: Business Class, Good Seat, wide selection of beverages and meals

Oi! Peepsies! This will be a quick one, since I plan to blog about something else soon.

I know it's a bit late to talk about the Emmys, but I only got to watch the full coverage yesterday, so better late than whatever! And since the episode guide looked empty even days after the award show's broadcast, I decided to do a little contributing. The cast/crew list, allusions, trivia, notes & quotes, and recap have already been posted. The recap, apart from being lengthy and boring, includes the list of nominees and winners.

    Emmy Notes:
    • NPH: deserves an Emmy for the fabulous job with the opening number. (video & lyrics); such a great sport, even though I certainly feel he deserved that Emmy (FTW got inverted!); made an awards show a pleasure to watch! Bring him back next year!
    • In Memoriam Tribute: While it didn't make me bawl as much as the season premiere of Grey's Anatomy did, it did give me a jackfruit-sized lump in my throat! And I didn't even know half the people being flashed on screen! Such a moving rendition by Sarah MacLachlan (who, btw, is Canadian. I'm not. I'm just saying.) of her song "I Will Remember You". The complete list of honorees can be found in the Trivia section of TV.com's episode guide for the 61st Emmys.
    • Dr. Horrible's Diabolical Disruption: They totally stole this idea from the 2008 Memmys! I have proof -- "Unfortunately, Dr. Horrible has succeeded in his evil plan of sabotaging the 2008 Memmys." Read more about Dr. Horry here. Watch Dr. Horrible's Emmy Interruption here.
    • TV.com Breakthrough Moment: Well, another Memmy rip-off... Last time I checked, "Most Memorable Fantabulous Phenomensational Moment!!!" was a category in the 2009 Memmys And I wasn't thrilled that Bill Compton won the award.
    • Mad Men Again, Seriously!?: Overly overrated is understating it. What's so brilliant about it?! I've seen the recent seasons of all the Outstanding Drama Series nominees, and Mad Men was my least favorite! (No show guide link for you! Hah!) Isn't level of non-boredom a criteria in deciding who wins!?
    • Odd "People know him/her from" Credits: I thought that was cute and creative. The list of odd credits can be found in the Trivia section of TV.com's episode guide for the 61st Emmys. Ex. Chandra Wilson - Gloria in CBS Schoolbreak Special episode "Sexual Considerations"
    • Well-Deserved Wins: The "C"s -- Cranston, Close, Chenoweth, Collette. I've never seen Two and a Half Men, but NPH should've changed his name to Neil Patrick Colentoni, just for that particular evening! Well, Emerson was an exception. He's from that weird South Pacific Island after all.
    • Win-Wishlist-a-Bust: Better luck next year, Rose Byrne, Aaron Paul, Christina Applegate (give her a new show!).

What did you think of this year's Emmys award show? ...of NPH as host? ...of the results? For those who participated in TV.com's Emmy LiveBlog, don't forget to sign up for your Emmys 2009 emblems here.

Thanks for dropping by. Hope all you peepsies are doing well! Enjoy your weekend!

Due to insistent public demand, and by public I mean four peepsies (Anne, Ivy, Emiko, Daria), I'm blogging even though there really isn't anything important in my life to blog about. But that never stopped me before so...

    SHINY NEW BANNERS
Since I finished watching a couple of new shows
and now that the new Fall TV season is upon us, I updated/rearranged my profile banner(s) to include... well, those that I finished watching and a few series I'm looking forward to watching.

So now I have a 6-in-1 banner -- 2 comedy banners, 2 action/scifi/crime, 2 drama. You may wonder why Castle and The Unusuals belong to the comedy banner and Eureka and Kyle XY aren't part of the sci-fi banner. Well, that's just the way I like it! And it just fits well with the layout.

Those outlined with red ink are shows I'll most likely check out (who am I kidding!? I'll probably check out most of the pilots). Anyway, here's a quick rundown of the ones I included above:

Among the shows coming out next year, I'm looking forward to Day One, The Deep End, and 100 Questions ... and recent Dorians Chuck and Lost (anyone know of promo videos I can link to?)!
*Show titles above all link to video previews/promos/trailers.

    DOING DETECTIVE WORK

What do Veronica Mars, Jonathan Ames, and Precious Ramotswe have in common? You're probably going, 'Precious Ramots-what now?!' They're all fictional private detectives/investigators in the shows that I edit. Yes, Ms.V, I'm thrilled for me too. Somehow, the previous editor was retired most probably due to being MIA. So I'm gonna do some Veronica Mars rewatching some time soon!

I also wish to read Alexander McCall Smith's book series from which HBO's The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency is based. No word yet if it's renewed for a 2nd season, but I highly recommend this show (thanks, Jodie and Bea for the "reco"!) to anyone who's into light-hearted dramedies having a similar theme as Veronica Mars. It's about a mid-30s woman who opens the first and only ladies' detective agency in Botswana and helps out locals in solving mysteries and crimes in the area.

I already described what Bored to Death is about. The one who created the character Jonathan Ames is named Jonathan Ames as well! What a weird coincidence! Since I have this fondness for stories about writers (not to mention, loser-types, I mean underdogs), it's highly likely that I'll enjoy editing this guide. This is also the reason why I changed my avatar (again!) to Zach Galifianakis (aka full-bearded dude in The Hangover, aka Eliza Dushku's morgue supervisor on Tru Calling, aka Ray Hueston, best friend of Ames on this show, aka shares a birthday with yours truly -- this answers your question Jess, I guess).

Wow, this blog dragged longer than I intended. I do tend to talk a lot when I put my mouth into it. Thanks to everyone who read the blah blah blog above or to anyone who just dropped by. I now leave you with a video interview of Bradley Cooper (The Hangover, Alias) by Zach in his web talk show on FunnyOrDie.com and an entirely unrelated quote from a wise committee member of the Memmys.

"Life is what happens when you're busy watching too much TV."
    - anonymous Memmys committee member

Final, final word: Many thanks to
lowriderz95s10, thefanof, and hsavage for the TCs and editorship!

...unless you send them in. You have until 08/16/2009 23:59:59 PST to cast your votes. Vote (for **** and **** 'cause ***** and ***** are still winning.)!

Pardon my absence from blogging and putting up games. I've even missed commenting on some of your blogs. I'm still here though, contributing like crazy to show guides during my 'absence'. I still have a few peepsie bios to write and hopefully some episode recaps. Thanks to the following peepsies for the recent tee-cees: Sherasbear, danbambridge, hsavage, madison1314, kikimarie593, ecgirl08, Formulakaz, spikemaniac, i5star, afenla, TreeHill_89, and jordinajamaica. I hope I didn't miss anyone.

I'll put up a more decent blog after the Memmys results come out, probably short reviews on the shows I've been watching.

Have a ridonculous weekend! And to those who are leaving for a vacation, where's my fricking invitation!?
    Later, peepsies!

Watch the teaser trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland set to be released on March 5, 2010. It stars Aussie actress Mia Wasikowska (In Treatment) as Alice and Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter. While waiting for the movie to come out, VOTE for this year's Memmys! I know, one has nothing to do with the other.

BREAKING NEWS!!!: MACK TRACKS BACK MACK!! TWEET, TWEET!!
Wait!! before I proceed with the Memmys, I would just like to say Allison Mack's following me on Twitter!! Of course, I followed her first. But NEVER in my wildest (sometimes perverse) dreams have I thought that one of my most favorite TV celebrities would follow me back. (Background: I opened a Twitter account a week ago mainly to stalk, I mean follow my favorite actors esp. the ones whose guides I handle on this site. I once edited Mack's guide too.) I'm following about 40 now. Yeah, Paparazzi much!? And
Allison Mack followed me back!!! She even left a message thanking me. No idea what to reply to her. I believe she actually follows back everyone who follows her there. [Her account seems real since thousands are following her, and I know she's into all these web fads.]

Sorry to sound like a crazed fan, but Twitter's awesome!
I know it can be lame, but days like this, it's just awsh!! Another celebrity by the name of Kyle (shoubie) is also a twitter buddy of mine! [I know, Kyle, I should've made that into THE Headline instead of a footnote. My apologies. Kidding!] Oh, and sorry again about your dear friend. Do you guys tweet? Any celebrity tweet moments you want to share?

Nominate six (6) or LESS is fine too for each of these 10 categories...

For those who have sent their nominees already, I'll send you PMs.

Don't mind the Memmys committee, just talking among themselves.

EDIT: Kindly promote the Memmys 2009. Linking in your blogs and sigs is greatly appreciated! Since TV.com's still experiencing a glitch with handing out emblems, we won't have Memmys emblems (memblems) just yet. In the meantime, you may use this Memmys 2009 icon/avatar, if you so desire. Gotcha,... *what's a word that rhymes with 'gotcha'?*... Jeez, I got nothing! It's just like the word 'orange'! Anyway, no winners yet! I was just making sure you check out this blog -- with the mechanics and categories being here and all...

As you well know (unless you're a Memmys virgin), last year, the list of Memmy Award nominees (or memminees, for short) were forced on you, 'cause the Memmys committee last year didn't have even an ounce of decency to consult you, our beloved television addicts, on which shows should make the final list of memminees.

So this year, the Memmy Awards committee (composed mainly of a single individual with multiple personalities) decided to hear your voices (apart from the ones in his head) and account your choices...

Let's get down to it then...

    2009 Memmy Awards Categories:
    01. Most Memorable Guest Star Performance in a Comedy Series (Male or Female)
    02.
Most Memorable Guest Star Performance in a Drama Series (Male or Female)
    03. Most Memorable Male Performance in a Comedy Series
    04.
Most Memorable Female Performance in a Comedy Series
    05.
Most Memorable Male Performance in a Drama Series
    06.
Most Memorable Female Performance in a Drama Series
    07.
    Most Memorable Fantabulous Phenomensational Moment!!!
    08.
    Most Memorable Imprestacular Marvelen-wait-for-it-dary Episode!!!
    09.
    Most Memorable Comedy Series
    10.
    Most Memorable Drama Series

For categories 1&2: Guest Star does NOT necessarily have to be a recurring character.

For categories 3-6: Nominees can either be a lead star or a supporting actor/actress on the show.

    2009 Memmy Special Awards:
    • Most Memorable Ensemble Cast Award
    - self-explanatory
In-Memory-Of Character Award (Posthumous) or the Killed-Off Character Award
    - for the fictionally departed
Just Plain Awsh Peepsie Achievement Award
    - for the TV personality (actor, actress, writer, creator, etc.) who is just plain awesome! It's the equivalent of the Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Which Shows/Seasons Qualify; Which Do Not?:
    • Base your nominees from the MOST RECENT COMPLETED SEASON for the show from the period Jul 2008 - Jun 2009, whether the series is a Summer/Fall/Midseason show.
    - True Blood S1 qualifies, True Blood S2 does not.
    - Mad Men S2 qualifies, Mad Men S1 obviously does not.
Canceled shows. As long as they got canceled from the period Jul 2008 - Jun 2009, they qualify.
    - Pushing Daisies S2 and Reaper S2 qualify, Journeyman S1 does not.
    - Sorry, Veronica Mars S3 and Wonderfalls S1 do not qualify either.

    Mechanics:
    1. You will each be entitled to ONE ballot.
    2. For each of the 10 categories, nominate SIX (6).
    3. Rank your nominees from most memorable (1) to least memorable (6).

Sample ONLY (I'm not trying to influence you or anything...):
    Most Memorable Drama Series:
    1) Breaking Bad
    2) Lost
    3) Grey's Anatomy
    4) Supernatural
    5) Dexter
    6) House
    4. For each of the Special Awards, nominate THREE (3).
    5. Nominees will ONLY be accepted thru PM. Please indicate "My Memminees 2009" on the Subject field.
    6. Defending your nominees is highly encouraged.

When the final list of memminees comes out, you might just be quoted if your nominee makes it on the list! Like how Ryan Seacrest does it on American Idol -- "Randy said, 'You nailed it, dawg! That performance blew me away!' Paula said, 'You were so cute on stage, I just wanna hug you! And your dress is real pretty tonight.' Simon said, 'Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant!'".

    7.
Links/URLS to video clips are most welcome, esp. for the
Most Memorable Fantabulous Phenomensational Moment!!! and Most Memorable Imprestacular Marvelen-wait-for-it-dary Episode!!! nominees.

    Points System:
    1. I'm not good at explaining so I'll just use the sample ballot above.

    Most Memorable Drama Series
    1) Breaking Bad - 6 pts.
    2) Lost - 5 pts.
    3) Grey's Anatomy - 4 pts.
    4) Supernatural - 3 pts.
    5) Dexter - 2 pts.
    6) House - 1 pt.

    2. To encourage you to fill out all six slots for every category, your nominee(s) will get LESS points if you leave any of the slots blank. Sample:

    Most Memorable Drama Series:
    1) Breaking Bad - 3 pts.
    2) Lost - 2 pts.
    3) Grey's Anatomy - 1 pt.
    4)
    5)
    6)

If you filled out five, top-ranked show gets 5 pts. If you wrote down just two shows, top-ranked show gets 2 pts. Ya' dig?!

Even if your favorite show is ranked no.1 on your ballot, there is a good chance it still won't make in the final list of nominees since you were too lazy to fill out the ballot.

If you don't want to bother yourself with the points system, just try to fill out all six slots for every category. Trust my math skills to accurately tabulate your ballots.

There's no need to rush! But I really hope you take the time out to fill out your ballots. You have until July 17 (Friday) to send your memminees!
If you have any questions or violent reactions, please post them in the comments section below. If those reactions are too violent and bordering on homicidal, kindly PM them to me.

For the complete list of last year's Memmy Award winners, point and click. Last year, the Memmy Awards committee was the sole entity who decided the nominees. This year, YOU GET TO BE HEARD! Your memory matters. The categories and mechanics for this year's Memmy Award nominations will be posted soon! Memmy-nations begin on July 1, 2009. Oh, and I won't mind if you spread the news about this year's Memmys or if you link to this blog.

Some images above were shamelessly plucked from TV.com's Emmy Nominee Pick 'em Game.

EDIT: I tweaked the Memmys promo. Just imagine the voiceover for movie trailers reading the subtitles.

    Yo, TV.com peepsies!

Today's mackblog is all about peepsies: athlete peepsies, celebrity peepsies, and even non-celebrity TV.com peepsies. The blog will be filled with so many peepsies that by the time you're done reading through this entry, "peepsies" will be written in as a dictionary word right smack between "peeps" (n. people) and "peke-a-pug" (n. cross between a pekingese and a pug) in Merriam-Webster.

The entry will read: peepsies. please see "peeps" above.

    Congratulations, Pac-Man!
    Filipino boxing great
Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao debuted in this year's Forbes' Top Earning Athletes with $40M in earnings from last year. He is tied with golf legend Phil Mickelson and basketball phenom LeBron James. Most of his earnings came from his wins against Oscar De La Hoya (Dec 2008
) and Ricky Hatton (May 2009) and from product endorsements including those for San Miguel Beer and Nike.

With his win against Hatton, Pacquiao became only the second boxer to have won titles in six different weight cla$$es, following the now-retired De La Hoya.

Congratulations, Manny! The Filipino peepsies are proud of your astonishing achievements. Keep it up, and please don't run for public office after you hang your gloves.

    Celebrity Peepsies to Watch:

    1. Nelsan Ellis. If you watched True Blood season 1, then you know him as Lafayette Reynolds, the flamboyant short-order cook at Merlotte's Diner who also sells V-blood as a sideline. Watch this AIDS burger clickity clip and be convinced that he is easily one of the top breakthrough performers of 2008. Does this guy lack personality or what!?
Did You Know? (a) Nelsan was schoolmates with True Blood co-star Rutina Wesley (Tara) in Juilliard. (b)
After he graduated, he was hoping to be cast in Charmed, even as a background character.
See Him In...: The Soloist (with Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr.)

    2. Aaron Paul. He's Jesse Pinkman, the junkie business partner of Walter White on Breaking Bad. While Walter takes care of the meth-cooking, Jesse deals with the dirty and dangerous task of drug distribution. My favorite Pinkman-centric episode last season was "Peekaboo" just because of the ATM scene. (Sadly, I can't find the link to this one.) Here's a different clip of Jesse holding his own against Bryan Cranston.
Did You Know? He "came on down" as a contestant on The Price is Right. He even reached the showcase showdown but overbid on his showcase by a mere $132.00. And no, he didn't think Bob Barker was his real father.
See Him In...: Big Love (as Amanda Seyfried's boyfriend)

    3. Kat Dennings. She's the sarcastic yet charming, indie-music-loving half (the female half, obviously) in Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist -- the other half played by Michael Cera. If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it. Simple story + great soundtrack + some funny moments = overall, an entertaining & enjoyable film! Here's a trailer of the movie.
Did You Know? (a) Kat is an avid video blogger -- YouTube Account. (b) She once dated Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds).
See Her In...: Charlie Bartlett (with Anton Yelchin and Robert Downey, Jr.) -- another highly recommendable film!

    4. Mia Wasikowska. She brilliantly portrayed suicidal gymnast Sophie in season one of In Treatment. Another Australian actress invading US film and television. This just proves that Aussie actresses are simply awsh! (Rose Byrne, Isla Fisher, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, the list goes on...) Acting chops on display in this one-minute clip from the HBO series.
Did You Know? (a) Mia is a trained ballet dancer. (b) She was the one who actually did the cartwheel across the top of Paul's couch using it as a balance beam (In Treatment "Week 4"). They did use a stunt double for the back-flip dismount.
See Her In...: Defiance (with Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber) -- yet another recommendable film, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (with Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway)
-- click movie title link for news/pics, and Amelia (with Ewan McGregor and Hilary Swank)

Dennings and Wasikowska were also named in Variety's Top 10 Actors to Watch in 2008. Article clickies here and here.

    Googly Alerts!
To keep the peepsie guides I edit up-to-date, I've been using Google Alert which emails me news and articles on the celebrities I'm interested in. It's a trick I learned from IndianaMom, if I'm not mistaken. Here are some recent items Google Alerts came up with:

Peepsie Guide Suggestions/Tips (for PG editors):
    • In forming your trivia blurbs, try to vary the way you begin your sentences. (a tip I learned from Thomas/Hoeech) The guide would look/read better if some of the blurbs don't begin with "Robert Downey, Jr. is...".
    • Try to avoid having a guide that has one-liners for trivia items. Put in as much relevant info as you can into the blurbs. On the other hand, don't write down a whole novel or story as a blurb. Normally, 2-3 lines would do.
    • Combine related trivia items on favorites, family members, film appearances, awards, etc.
    • Write a decent bio. (I'm actually guilty of not following this during my previous stint as editor. I had a couple of guides with empty bios before I retired them.). Things you may include: childhood, education, acting debuts, career highlights, etc.
    • Try to limit the number of quotes found on the guide to reduce clutter. You can provide a Quips & Quotes thread in the person guide forum for excess quotes.

    Featured TV.com Peepsie Blogs:

I hope you don't mind that I linked to your blogs. If you do, just inform me and I'll take it down right away.

    On TV.com:

Thanks for peeping, peepsies! Enjoy the rest of your week!

    P.S.
Crappy blog system won't allow me to post colored clickies! Everything is just black and blue.

Here's one for a random, pointless blog... You have been warned.

Now that quite a few series have been canceled this season and we'll most likely miss some of our favorite characters, why not have these characters transfer to shows that are still airing or will return this fall. Here are a few ideas (which I hope none of you take too seriously, well except maybe the network producers who may chance upon this blog)

Rose and Sage Baker, pack your Louis Vuittons and head off to the West Coast! Sun, sand, and scandals await you in your new area code. Of course, you can bring your tutor Megan with you. She can apply for a job in Beverly Hills High.

As it turns out, the rich and powerful Darlings are distant relatives of the Waldorfs! Jeremy and Karen aren't leaving Manhattan just yet! While Chuck and Jeremy are out partying, Blair and Karen are indoors having a lingerie-fitting fest!

Olive Snook can bring pep (and some pie) to the William McKinley High School glee club now that the Pie Hole has closed down. With Olive's singing prowess and chipper nature, she'd be welcome to join the club. Of course, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about since I don't watch the musical show.

The unusual cops from NYPD's second precinct are now out of a job after only a few cases, since no one really watched them as they fought crime in New York (except for me; anyone else?!). I hope these quirky cops replace Beckett's team of dull detectives as she and Castle try to catch more bad guys.

From New York to Los Angeles, we find more cops out of work. Not that Patrick Jane needs any assistance in solving crimes in California, but who wouldn't want Charlie Crews and Dani Reese on their team? (And it needs mentioning... Sarah Shahi is hot, so she has to be on TV!)

Since Buy More and Work Bench both opened in 2007, I've always wondered about who among the employees would win in case a Superstore Employee Slack-Off Challenge was ever held. Now, we can wonder no more as Sock and Ben are sure hires to proudly wear the Buy More greens with Morgan, Jeffster, and co. And Ben, please bring Nina with you when you relocate to California.

Well, the series about escaped convicts has finally ended (thank G!), but wouldn't you want to see your favorite Fox River 8 villain creating more trouble and messing with people's lives? I've already started a petition to have Sleaze-Bag released out of prison and to give him similar powers as Sylar.

Now for my Top Three Favorite Character Transfers:

Just to see the love story of Chuck and Ned continue...
Ned can put up a Pie Hole branch either in Grandview or in Bon Temps. Of course, if he decides to set up shop in Bon Temps, he'd have to stock up on cases of True Blood. He may also sell special V-blood-injected pies for fangbangers and V-blood junkies alike. Ned can even rid the town of the vampires by touching them back to life!
If he goes to Grandview, he'll be a tough competition for Melinda. He can easily relay the one-minute messages of the dead without waiting for the ghosts to appear! And I think Chuck and Melinda has BFF written all over them!

Sam and Dean have been doing this demon-fighting gig for what... four years now? And they've barely scratched hell's surface (but I'm sure Dean will disagree). Now, what better way to fight these demons than to have the Devil's son himself on your side, right!? So, I say two Sams are better than one! And after they've captured the escaped demons, the three of them can just drive in Dean's Impala to the DMV, go to Gladys' counter, and place the vessel on the mat.

In case the Dollhouse is looking for a new active, well they're in luck 'cause Cameron's currently inactive and would be perfect as a "doll". It would also be good to see River, Wash, and the inventor of the Dollhouse reunite. And I'd pay a dollar (OK, maybe five dollars) to see Cameron kick Echo's, Alpha's, and Whatever-Greek-Letter's collective asses! Then I'd pay more to see Cameron in the Dollhouse showers.

So which character(s) would you pay good dollars for to see in the showers... I mean to see in another show?! Which shows are you grieving for right now? And what replacement shows have you got lined up?

FEATURED SHOWS (Canceled): Privileged, Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies, The Unusuals, Life, Reaper, Prison Break, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
FEATURED SHOWS (Returning): 90210, Gossip Girl, Glee, Castle, The Mentalist, Chuck, Heroes, Ghost Whisperer, True Blood, Supernatural, Dollhouse

    TV-Viewing and Stuff:

    • Just finished watching the new season premieres of Weeds and True Blood. Both great starts to their respective seasons. Can I just say, 'Poor Celia!'. Jennifer Jason Leigh is joining the show as Nancy's sister so Yay! And I was delighted (and not entirely surprised) to see a particular character in True Blood. I'll shut up now so I won't reveal any spoilers.
    • Picked up True Blood cast members Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte), Alexander Skarsgard (Eric Northman), and Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds). Ms.V, I'm gonna need some rehab soon.
    • US Shows: Still watching In Plain Sight; Finished season one of The Unit; Finished first two seasons of Ghost Whisperer; Haven't started on Burn Notice
    • UK Shows: Watched the sitcoms Plus One (only 'cause Miranda Raison is in it) and How Not to Live Your Life (the title caught my attention). Both series were short and sweeeet. Haven't started on Black Books
    • New TV.com icon/avatar c/o Ela. Thanks again! I'll hang on to this "Knock 3x Penny" icon for a while.
    • Finally, HAPPY TV.com ANNIVERSARY, VITAL (Vital_Shot) and ELA (mafalada)!! The site wouldn't be as fun without the both of you. Everyone else who's not celebrating their anniversary on the site, leave your greetings on their blogs now. But please come back to leave comments here too.

Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy the rest of your week!

    Hey all! How's it going?

I'm sure you recognize the blog title. If not, shame on you!... No, clicky here. By the way, the statement is somewhat false. Even if I do want to ride my bike,
    I don't know how to.

I know I promised to post Part II of my 30 (More) TV Places to See Before You Die blog, but then another idea came to me. I just thought with all the traveling that you'll be doing in telly-landia, you'll need some form of transport. So I thought, why not just provide you with sweet rides to choose from! So here they are, in no particular order whatsoever, my
Top Ten Sweeeeetest Rides on Television.

    01. Walt and Jesse's RV. Bryan Cranston in briefs. Body-dumping. Blue crystal-meth cooking. Piss-covered pissed-off Jesse in scrap yard. MacGyver-ish replacement batteries.

    02. Dean's 67 Chevy Impala. Passed on from Denny to Dean. Cross-country driving. Trunk full of Winchester weapons. classic Rock cassette tapes or iPod jack? Heart-to-heart bro moments.

    03. The TARDIS. Small on the Outside, Bigger in the Inside. Come along, capable companions! Spacious ride thru time and space. Fell into a Black Hole. Doctor + Donna = Defeating the Daleks.

    04. Dharma van. Hurley's 'find' driven down the hill. Dead Alvarez smells like fart. Miles and Daddy bonding moments. Destination: Any Dharma station, just not to The Looking Glass.

    05. The Comet. "The little boy saw a comet... and suddenly his life was whole. and when the comet went away, he waited his whole life for it to come back."

    06. Nerd Herd mobile.
Sarah: Stay in the car, Chuck!
    Chuck
: Technically, I still have one foot in the car.

Spot the car and win a prize!

    07. Battlestar Galactica. When a whole show is named after the ship, then that transport should no doubt be in the Top Ten! So many moments to choose from. Just watch the damn show! You won't regret it!

    08. Serenity.
    Favorite episode: "Out of Gas"
    Favorite part of the ship
: Dining area (and Inara's shuttlecraft!)
Favorite passenger: Kaylee, obviously! (see picture above) The ship won't run without her.

    09. Claire's car. "You can't take a picture unless it's already gone". Those were the words uttered before I was witness to the BEST six minutes spent in a car for any TV series EVER! (Even beating out Brooke Davis undressed at the back of a car!)

    10. Seattle Grace elevator.
Top 3 Elevator Moments: (WARNING: click the links and be SPOILED)
    • Derek, Addison, Meredith, and Rose find themselves in the elevator all at the same time ("Piece of My Heart")
    • The Proposal ("Elevator Love Letter")
    • Izzie all Dolled Up (Do I even have to say which episode!?)

    Honorable Mention:
    Lorelai Gilmore's jeep
    Behavioral Analysis Unit jet
    Kelso's van
    Phoebe's van
    • Vessels given by The Devil to Sam
    JD's bike

So which of these sweeeeeet rides have you ridden/been in?! Any fond moments you care to share?

    Some TV.com stuff...
adopted a handful of people guides (from the shows that I watch) since I came back. -- Jesse Pinkman, Breaking Bad. Henry, Party Down. Sage Baker, Privileged. Erica Strange, Being Erica. Nina the Demon, Reaper. Arizona Robbins and McDreamy, Grey's Anatomy. Ryan Walker, Brothers and Sisters. Sophie, In Treatment. Jamie, Tell Me You Love Me. Ellen Parsons, Damages. Jason Stackhouse, True Blood. Kate Beckett, Castle. Matt Saracen, Friday Night Lights. And some of the female MI5 agents from Spooks, which BTW is my most favorite show right now (maybe all-time!).
wrote bios for each one (except for the most recent one I picked up) -- around 250-350 words each. So if any of those characters interest you and you wish to know more about the actors behind the roles, click the link(s) above and go check out their guides.
I'm now a Happy Little Tree. I don't even know what that means, but it just sounds dirty.
The brag part of the blog ends here. 'Cos a blog's a drag without a little bit of brag. Kidding!!

Thanks for dropping by. Happy weekend, everyone!

    P.S.
I've never before ran into this much trouble with Bullets and Blocking when posting a blog. I give up! No blocking then!
