Hey, how's everyone doing? Good i hope.

It has been a while since i last posted a blog entry and there have been good reasons for that. Work and more recently my holidays have kept me away.

About my holidays, for a change i left the island where i'm usually stranded. I went on a twelve day trip across the Portuguese mainland.

Started off in Lisbon, capital city, where i stayed for three days. I already knew the city, in fact it's the only place i know in the Portuguese mainland, but nonetheless, i wanted to visit it again. Here is a picture of me near the Torre de Belém, one of the city's and country's landmarks:

    Check out teh shades

Next i headed south to Faro, capital of Algarve, a region known for it's warm weather and great beaches. I stayed there for six days. That gave me the opportunity to get to know not only Faro, but also other places like Albufeira, home of some of the country's best beaches. Here i am in Albufeira:

Couldn't wait to get in the water...

For the last three days i headed towards the north, to Portugal's second biggest city, Porto. Porto was a really pleasant surprise, it's a beautiful city, filled with beautiful old buildings and bathed by the amazing river Douro, in which shores is produced the world known Port Wine. Here is a picture of me near the D. Luiz I bridge and a picture of Avenida dos Aliados:

    Beautiful bridge

Those are painted statues, in case you're wondering...

Came back home yesterday, tired of all the walking and long train trips, but really happy with what i've experienced in this holiday. I had a really good time.

Btw, my eyes are not closed in those pics. They's just semi shut due to the strong sunlight.

Well, this was an update on my whereabouts. See you guys around.

As i was growing up, i was mostly a Sega guy. Played the Master System, the Mega Drive (Genesis for my American friends) and even the Game Gear. Also played the Saturn and the Dreamcast, but that was when everything started to go downhill for Sega. For me, Sega had its gold age when the Mega Drive / Genesis was out.

I bought Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection the other day. Bought it because there isn't anything else coming out now that really interest me. I was a little afraid that i wouldn't enjoy this collection of classic games from Sega because i might have been spoiled by recent generations games. Boy, was i wrong... The minute i started playing games like Alex Kidd, Sonic, Streets of Rage, Altered Beast and many others, my mind was flooded with so many memories of the many afternoons and evenings i spent playing those games with my friends, especially with my cousin Roberto who was like a brother when we were growing up.

I felt good inside when those memories started popping up. In these times where life seems so much hard and less happy, having those memories and feelings was really great. I never thought classic games would have this effect on me.

Thank you Sega, for giving me the opportunity with this collection of games to remember some of the best childhood moments that i had.

At least for me it does.

Until October, there's no must get game coming out. From that point on though, there's more games than i can handle. I hate this. I hate the fact that most high profile developers choose to release their games around the holiday season. I know it's the smartest thing to do since that's the time when people buy more games, but i think it would be good if they chose to release more games during summer time. It would be good for more dedicated gamers, that like to have great games throughout the whole year, and lets be honest, a great game sells any time of the year.

Oh well. Guess it's time to finish some games and replay the ones i've been wanting to play again.

So, how about you guys? Do you feel the same way or do you disagree with me and think this summer drought some gamers talk about is a myth?

In other news, i got the Platinum Trophy for inFAMOUS. I'm not obsessed with trophies, but inFAMOUS was so damn good and fun to play that i decided i would go for it. I played the game twice, once as a good guy and once as a bad guy. Amazing game, the ending was really great. Bring on a sequel!

Seriously, this game owns me right now. I can't freaking stop playing it!

    Someone help me, please!

InFamous is one of those games that immerses you so deeply that when you're playing it, you don't notice time passing by and you're absolutely oblivious of what's happening around you.

InFamous is one heck of a fun game to play. It has its technical issues, like the occasional pop-in, but in no way that ruins the experience. This is the most fun sandbox game i have played since GTA Vice City.

    9.5/10

Go get it right now if you own a PS3 and like this type of game.

  • 25May 09

Since the first time i laid my eyes on InFAMOUS, i had a gut feeling that this game would be really great. Since the beginning i've been hyping it as AAA material and now that the reviews are coming out, i feel very satisfied. Satisfied because i'll soon be having another great game in my library, but also because i owned a lot of people that laughed in my face when i said this game was gonna get a 9.0 here on gamespot.

Here are the reviews of some of the most respectable sites and magazine publications:

    Gamespot - 9.0

    IGN- 9.2

    IGN UK- 9.0

    IGN AU- 8.6

    PSMUK- 9.0

    Game Informer- 9.0

    Gameplayer- 8.5

    Eurogamer- 7.0

    1UP- A-

    Gaming Age- A-

    CVG- 8.5

    Videogamer- 8.0

    Kikizo- 8.5

    Gamedaily- 9.0

    Play Magazine- 10

    Gametrailers- 9.0

    TVG- 8.0

Really good scores across the board.

The demo is very fun and addicting and i can't wait to get the full game. So, who's getting it also?

Yesterday i had my internet connection upgraded. It's part of a relatively new package of TV + Telephone + Internet that my ADSL internet provider is selling now. It comes out cheaper than what i had before so i subscribed it. I used to have a 3.5 Mbps connection and now it's at 11.5 Mbps. Those are the real download speeds, tested them myself. Upload speed increased significantly too. I don't need to say that the differences are huge. Downloads are much more faster and browsing the internet is a lot faster too.

It seems this has brought me a problem though. I can play Killzone 2, Resistance and even Mortal Kombat 2 online without a single hiccup, but i can't find a single match of SF4 to play. Whenever i search for a game i can't find any, it says there are no sessions available all the time. The only way i managed to play was by hosting a game and even that was crap, with lag all over the place.

I don't know what is happening. Was this just a temporary problem with SF4 online or am i doomed to not being able to play a single decent SF4 online match again, even with my friends?

I'm not technically savvy when it comes to this online play thing. Can someone enlighten me about what's going on?

I know some of my buddies around here own SFIV and have been having a lot of fun with it. With this blog i intend to know your tastes in some areas and your opinions.

I will post my answers as well to make things fair. Don't go thinking this is intended to find your weaknesses. I just want to know what are your likes, your dislikes and your opinions on this amazing game.

You can give the reasons for your answers.

1 - Your favorite character overall?

2 - Your favorite male character?

3 - Your favorite female character?

4 - Your least favorite character?

    5 - Strongest character?

    6 - Weakest character?

7 - The character you hate most playing against on arcade mode?

8 - The character you hate most playing against online?

9 - Most annoying character in your opinion?

    10 - Funniest character?

    11 - Your favorite move?

    12 - Most useless move?

    13 - Your favorite Ultra?

    14 - Most useless Ultra?

15 - Your favorite alternative costume (for those who have seen or have them)?

You can add a few more opinions about other stuff if you wish.

Lately i've been playing a lot of Street Fighter IV. I'm no pro, but i'm also no noob. I get my a** handed to me sometimes and other times i'm the one kicking a****.

When i'm getting a good beating and i realize my opponent is better than me, i play with him until i get tired of losing. It can take eight matches or three matches for me to quit, it depends on my mood. I also see a beating from a better player as a chance to learn a few things. When i choose to quit playing with someone, i wait for the match to end, to go to the lobby, and only then i leave the game. One of the things i have experienced a lot lately is seeing some of my opponents disconnect on purpose while the match is still on. Sometimes i'm about to beat them and they just quit, leaving me hanging in disbelief. I'm not the kind of guy to send hate messages, but sometimes i get so p***** off that i wonder why i don't do it. It annoys me lot and i wonder why people do it. Yes, i know it gets frustrating to lose many times, but at least people should show a little fair play and quit in the proper moment.

Disconnecters is also a problem in Mortal Kombat 2, even more so since it's easier to quit the game. I just love it when some guys disconnect in the moment i'm about to finish them with a fatality.

Rant over. See you guys around.

When gaming is concerned, i hate this day. Don't get me wrong, some things are pretty funny, but most gaming April Fools jokes are annoying as hell. Gaming sites' forums such as Gamespot's get flooded with way too many uninspired and unfunny jokes and lies, and some of the ones that are really good, leave me wishing they were true.

I guess the best thing to do is just ignore any news on this day.

Have a good April Fools everyone. Keep your eyes open.

Yes, yesterday my PS3 reached its second anniversary. Two years made up of a few boring initial months and lots and lots of great gaming moments. Some people can bash the PS3 all they want, but the truth is that no one can deny the great gaming experiences it has given to those that actually own one.

During these two years, i think i've build up a very good library of games. Here's a list of all the games i currently own and a few comments about each of them. I hope the comments help some of you guys in deciding on getting a particular game in this list.

    Disc based games:

    • Assassin's Creed - Too repetitive. Easily the game i enjoyed less on my PS3.
    • Bioshock- Excellent story, great atmosphere and innovative gameplay make an awesome game.
    • Burnout Paradise - Very fun racer, arcade style.
    • Condemned 2: Bloodshot - Very decent game with heavy atmosphere. Liked it a lot.
    • The Darkness - Starbreeze became one of my favorite developers because of this game. Nuff said.
    • Dead Space - Awesome game that blends together so many things i like, especially some movies: Aliens + Event Horizon + The thing = WIN.
    • Devil May Cry 4 - A good DMC game, but it's far from the greatness of number 1 and 3.
    • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - More than 160 hours played. Epic game.
    • Fallout 3 - Around 85 hours played. Another epic game by Bethesda.
    • Grand Theft Auto IV- Wasn't everything i expected, but it delivered. Good GTA game, but not worthy of the 10s it got.
    • Heavenly Sword - Very good action-adventure game with great visuals and very good story. Too bad it was a bit short.
    • Killzone 2 - Best looking game on consoles at the moment. It's not all looks though, this game has perfect controls (IMO) for a FPS, a great single campaign and very immersive multiplayer. It's the full package.
    • Little Big Planet - Sackboys rock! Cutest characters ever.
    • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Best game i've ever played in my life! A true masterpiece by Kojima-san.
    • Mirror's Edge - Running around jumping from building to building has never been so much fun.
    • Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe - It's not like the old 2D MKs, but it's a decent fighting game.
    • Motorstorm - Crazy fun to play online.
    • Ninja Gaiden Sigma - Very challeging action game. I loved it for its gameplay.
    • The Orange Box - Five games for the price of one? Nothing beats that. It has Portal, something that'll make your brain work.
    • Prince of Persia - Beautiful cell-shaded game with beautiful love story. Liked it a lot.
    • Resident Evil 5 - It was awesome! Had my doubts, but RE5 is a must have for any RE fan.
    • Resistance: Fall of Man - My first PS3 game and what a game it was. Great story and fun multiplayer.
    • Resistance 2 - A worthy sequel that improved in a lot of things.
    • Silent Hill: Homecoming - It's not like the first three Silent Hills, but it was a very enjoyable game, especially towards the end.
    • Street Fighter IV - BEST FIGHTING GAME EVER!!! That's saying a lot. Can't stop playing it.
    • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - Nathan Drake has become one of my favorites characters ever. This is the game i've beaten more times in my life, six times to be more precise. Can't wait for the sequel.

    PSN games:

    • Bionic Commando Rearmed - Old school platformer with HD visuals. Can make you tear your hair out.
    • Calling All Cars! - Fun game to play with friends by your side.
    • Flower - The perfect medicine after a stressful day at work or stressful game session.
    • Linger in Shadows - It's not a game and it's weird. Interesting concept though.
    • Locoroco Cocoreccho - Various colors sleeping and smiling balls.
    • Mortal Kombat II - Finish Him! A classic and my favorite MK ever. Had some intense online battles with this one.
    • PAIN - You throw people against a wall and they don't get hurt. How cool is that?
    • Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - Interesting RPG, but i haven't beaten it yet.
    • SIREN: Blood Curse - Scariest game i've played this gen. Very underappreciated.
    • Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix - SF2 all beefed up and with HD graphics? Yes please!
    • Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection - Not my favorite fighting series, but it was a very fun game to play.
    • Warhawk - Excellent online battles. Very, very fun.
    • Flow - Relaxing game.

Here they are, all my current PS3 games. Happy birthday PS3 and here's hoping for at least four more years filled with more awesome games.

  • 27Feb 09

Seriously, IMO, Street Fighter 4 is the best fighting game ever made. Perfect gameplay coupled with amazing graphics and artstyle, make a recipe for one outstanding fighting game.

Capcom did not fail to deliver with this one.

If you're a fighting games fan, do yourself a favor and go buy SF4 NOW! I need to play this game with some of you guys. Even if it means getting my a** kicked, I DON'T CARE! It's just so much fun to play that i can easily overlook some humiliation.

So who has it and who's planning to get it?:

  • 3Feb 09

So yesterday the Resident Evil 5 demo released on PSN. Exciting day for Resident Evil fans like me! I couldn't wait to download that demo and start playing it solo or with a friend through online co-op!

What was supposed to be a really great time, turned out to be kinda of a nightmare. For starters, the online co-op feature in this demo is simply broken. The way you invite one of your friends to play with you is completely different from every other game out there. You have to access XMB on your PS3, highlight your friend, press triangle and choose the send invite option. It's not something hard to do, but figuring this out has melted some brain cells of a lot of people out there, myself included. After this whole problem was solved, i was ready to play with one of my friends. He sent me an invite, i accepted it, a joining game screen is shown, the screen gets darker and after waiting a couple minutes i realised the demo froze. Exited the demo, repeated the process and the demo froze again. Ok... I then asked my friend to send me the invite. Got it, proceeded to join the game only to end up with a frozen demo again... WTF!!! I don't know how many times i tried to play online co-op in this demo with several of my friends. All i know is that they were a lot and all the attempts ended up in the same result... When i had finally given up, another of my friends asked me to try and play with him. I said ok. Sent him the invite and this time we were able to get in a game together! Wooohooo! Then i realised my screen was darkenned for some unknown reason and i couldn't see s***! Still, with the little i was able to see, i played for a while until my character died. Tried to play another stage with the same person only to get another freeze... Some of the sent invites don't even reach their destination. What a mess...

    But that's not all.

I love the RE series since the first game. Contrary to some hardcore fans of the series, i enjoyed the change in gameplay RE4 brought. My only complaint with RE4 was the impossibility to move your character while shooting, but since the game was so good in so many other aspects, i could live with that. With RE5 i expected a few changes and allowing your character to move while shooting was one of them. Well, that isn't the case and it totally ruins (IMO) what could be one hell of a game. After playing so many great games this generation that allows you to move and shoot at the same time (Dead Space, i'm looking at you), playing RE5 feels so arcaic and it's really frustrating. Some people say it helps build tension within the game... puts the "survival" in what once was a survival horror game... My *ss it does! All it managed to do was leave me on the brinck of a nervous brakedown! Seriously Capcom, get a clue and get with the times. You have an incredibly great looking game and you manage to ruin it with last gen gameplay. Did i mention controls feel really clunky?

Needless to say my first impressions of RE5 are not the greatest. I had high expectations for this game and so far it has failed to meet them.

Another thing that bothers me is the mandatory 5GB install for the PS3 version. After all this time Capcom hasn't learned anything from games like Uncharted, Dead Space, the upcoming KZ2 and plenty other games, who require no installation at all, and in the case of Uncharted it doesn't even have a single load screen after the initial one.

I'm done with this rant. Thanks for reading and sorry for the agressive tone.

I would like to thank your posts in my last blog. I appreciate it.

After thinking this through carefully, i decided not to buy an Xbox 360, at least not just yet. As i said in my last blog, i don't have too much time to spend on games. Buying an Xbox 360 now would be a mistake because i honestly wouldn't have time to play with it for a long while. There are quite a few games coming out that i'm getting for PS3, namely, Street Fighter IV, Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5 and Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. Those games are guaranteed to keep me busy throughout February, March and April. I wouldn't have space to fit in another console and at least two new games for it.

One other thing that helped me make my decision: I haven't played with my PSP for a few months! I still need to finish God of War: Chains of Olympus, Killzone Liberation and i need to get started on MGS: Portable Ops, plus i want to get Resistance: Retribution for it. If i haven't touched my PSP for such a long time, how the hell would i have time for the 360?!

With the money i was planning to use on the 360, i'm getting Mirrors Edge. I was planning to get this game anyway and since i found it dirty cheap for 39.99 euros (30 euros less than normal retail price) i decided to buy it. Will play it when i have the time. I also plan to get a Street Fighter IV fightpad if it ever comes out in Portugal. The rest of the money will be used in the games i'm buying in the next months (it's less money coming out from my bank account).

I haven't ruled out the 360 possibility definitely. I really, really want Alan Wake. When that game comes out, if i have the money, i'll probably get it with a 360. Who knows, maybe the 360 will be cheaper by then and i'll save some money.

As of now, an Xbox 360 purchase would be a mistake.

    Thanks for reading.

Pretty soon i'm getting some extra cash i wasn't counting on and i'm thinking about putting that money towards an Xbox 360 Pro.

I haven't made up my mind yet. I honestly don't have much time available for more than one console and, to be honest, the dreaded RROD scares me.

The things that really make me want an Xbox 360 are some of its exclusive games. I have to admit that i want to play Gears of War 1 & 2 and the upcoming Alan Wake looks very tempting.

To help me make a decision, i would like to hear your opinions and experiences you've had with the console.

  • 22Jan 09

After so much time with the Silent Hill theme in my profile, i decided it was about time to change it to something new.

As you guys have noticed already, my new theme is Killzone. Yep, i decided to jump in the hype train and go along for the ride.

I'm dying to put my hands on Killzone 2. After being in the beta and loved it, and after all the videos and some reviews, i can't help myself but think that Killzone will be a very special game that will shut up all the naysayers.

Your impressions are welcome, my friends.

Here's something to feast your eyes and ears.

    Enjoy!

  • 19Jan 09

    Yeah, it really is.

I got Prince of Persia as a Christmas present from my brother and to be honest i wasn't expecting much of the game. The fact the you can't die in this game and the claims that it was very short kinda of turned me off.

Well, surprise surprise, Prince of Persia turned out to be a great game and it's literally a beautiful sight to behold. This game's visuals are outstanding, in my opinion. The cell-shading look did wonders with it and it's a welcome change to what we saw in the Sands of Time trilogy.

Gameplay is also great. The platforming is flawless, really fun to play. The fact that you don't die because Princess Elika always saves you when you fall off a wall or a cliff doesn't spoil the experience in the slightest. The combat, on the other hand, wasn't much of my taste, but it was fun nonetheless. You can only fight one enemy at the time while in the previous games you could fight a whole lot more.

The story was very good and i loved the interactions and relationship between the Prince and Princess Elika, our companion throughout the adventure. It was really good, seeing how their relationship evolves and how they fall in love with each other.

Longevity was also a big surprise to me. When i read people saying it was a very short game i thought i would last like 8 hours. I don't know exactly how much time it took me to beat the game, but it wasn't less than 12 hours. You could probably beat the game in 8 hours if you simply rushed through it, but if you're looking into collecting all Light Seeds it will take you some time.

Prince of Persia is a very nice game, definately worth a try.

    See you guys around.

    ... of beaten games.

Man, i've had some busy weekends lately, either playing Fallout 3, Resistance 2 or Bioshock.

This past weekend i've beaten Resistance 2's campaign mode. Insomniac Games didn't disappoint with this one. Resistance 2 is a very good game with great visuals, great gameplay and a good story. The only thing i didn't like much was the ending. It wasn't something i wasn't expecting, but i was hoping it didn't turn out the way it did. I'm looking forward to the next one to see what happens next. Now that i'm done with the campaign in normal mode, i'm thinking about playing the game on hard to win a few more trophies. I should also be playing it online more often now.

Last night it was Bioshock's turn to join the beaten games list. I played, from where i left it a few weeks back, throughout sunday, monday and last night. Bioshock is simply an awesome game. When i thought i was done with it i got the biggest revelation and the game just kept going and going for plenty more hours. Bioshock is one of those games that just keeps you hooked! Great story, great graphics and unique gameplay that will leave you crying for more. I'm really looking forward to Bioshock 2.

Now that i've finished these two games it's time to get my hands on Dead Space and from what i've heard, i'm in for another great ride!

It's hard work being a gamer. Cheers guys.
