Part 2 of King's Non-Biased E3 Review
Nintendo's motto at E3 was to put a smile on everyone's face. Well let me say that Nintendo's E3 conference didn't make me smile. It was just bad in so many ways. Where should I begin?
The first thing they showed was a Shaun White snowboarding game. I don't think this game is going to be that great but it does make good use of the Wii Balance Board. I was annoyed though because that girl up there was trying to say that snowboarding in video games is better than doing it in real life because it's easier and safer. I've never been snowboarding but I'd much rather experience the real thing instead of some game.
The Nintendo DS is one of the most successful systems today including both portable systems and home consoles. I do own a DS but I never play it anymore because hardly any games interest me. After watching the E3 conference there still aren't very many games I care about.
Nintendo mostly announced some games that made me say "meh" but I am excited for Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. I'm not sure how this will work out, but I'd like to see it.
I guess the DS just isn't for me. Nintendo seems to target the casual gamers instead of the core gamer. It's a little disappointing for some people but there's this small group of core gamers, and then there's everyone else so I guess good for Nintendo that they can reach out to those other people.
On to the Wii, one of the first games announced was Animal Crossing: City Folk. Getting passed the weird name, this game looks really fun. It comes with a Wii Speak which is a way to talk to other people online but instead of having a personal headset, it let's everyone in the room talk. It's probably so parents can moniter what their kids are talking about. At least there's finally a way to talk to friends online and hopefully a lot more games will be using Wii Speak.
After them bragging about their sales and what not, they announced a few average games that I don't care about.
One things I have to give Nintendo props for is Wii Motion Plus. It looks like it will add an even better experience for the Wiimote's motion sensing. The game they showed off with Wii Motion Plus was Wii Sports Resort. It looks like it has a few fun minigames but nothing I was crazy about. Nevertheless it's still good to see the new Motion Plus feature.
A big game announcement was Wii Music. Just think Rock Band with a lot more instruments and you don't have to hit specific notes. The idea of this game is to get with your friends and have fun making up your own music, but I really am not too excited about it.
Nintendo basically didn't have any big announcements and it was just a below average conference.

Part 1 of King's Non-Biased E3 Review
Of the three major gaming companies, Microsoft's press conference was up first so it was up to them to start off E3 right.
Because the original Xbox is dead and Microsoft doesn't have any portable systems so they only have to focus on one thing, and that's the highly successful Xbox 360.
Microsoft started off by showing the RPG/FPS Fallout 3. The open world gameplay looks like it'll make the game really fun, and it looks a lot like Oblivion. But much like Oblivion I think the gameplay in Fallout 3 really doesn't look like it will be that great. But this brings me to one of my complaints about Microsoft's conference which is that they were mostly showing multiplatform games so they were doing just as much for the PS3 as they were for their 360.
There's a few other games I'd like to point out, the first being Fable 2. Having your own world that's different from everybody else's looks really cool but I don't know if the rest of the game is anything to be excited about.
Another game is Resident Evil 5 which I can say is looking good right now. The graphics especially look nice. One thing that worries me about RE5 is that there really isn't anything that I've seen that looks new in the gameplay. Don't get me wrong, cIassic Resident Evil gameplay is great but I like games that try something new. And like many other games shown this will also be on the PS3 so Microsoft didn't impress me much by showing this.
Many games were shown at E3, but one a lot of people ar talking about is Gears of War 2. I've seen a lot about this game and it's looking good so far. The graphics look extremely well for a 360 game with only a few weak spots that I noticed, and while they aren't anything that can rival a game like MGS4, the graphics are still very impressive. The gameplay in Gears 2 looks like it's fun fast-paced action but like a lot of shooters it doesn't really innovate. Also from what I've heard the online doesn't sound like it'll be amazing. I'm not saying it'll be bad online because it'll still be a lot of fun to play Gears 2 online with friends, but it just doesn't have any new features online that sounds amazing.
Halo Wars really didn't excite me, because I think it'll just be another "meh" Real Time Strategy console game. If I remember right, it takes place 20 years before Halo 1 so it'll tell the early story of Halo, but Hslo has never been known for it's story so I guess we'll see how it turns out.
Xbox Live is undoubtedly the best online experience of the 3 current gen systems (although it's a turn off for me because unlike the Wii and PS3 online you have to pay). At this year's E3 Microsoft introduced a lot of new features to Xbox Live. One of the biggest additions is the introduction of avatars. This move was definatley just a response to the Wii's Mii and PS3's Home avatars if they ever release Home. It looks like Xbox's avatars will have a big role in interacting with other's on Live. While this isn't anything new and creative, it's a decent move for Microsoft to add avatars.
After a lot of bragging about how they think the 360 is so much better than everything else, they introduced a bunch of casual games like Lips, Scene It, Banjo Kozoie, You In the Movies, game show games, and some others. I think by introducing these games Microsoft was trying to get more people interested in the 360, probably a response to the Wii. Nice try, but I don't think this is going to work all that well.
As you already know, Microsoft ended their 2008 E3 Conference with a bang. When they brought Square Enix to the stage I was thinking "I bet Final Fantasy 13 is coming to the 360". Then they announced 3 boring games and I figured I was wrong, but then they came back and showed a trailer for Final Fantasy 13. I've never been into the Final Fantasy games, but I know it's a pretty big series and FF13 was a big exclusive for Sony. This is a very nice move by Microsoft.
In the end Microsoft had a good conference overall, but they didn't really blow me away with anything.
