i play games for story, characters, exploration and customization. challenging gameplay that requires thought and tactics is fine when it suits the story. playing as a high level, nigh-invincible character that isn't able to easily wade through brain dead, bullet sponge AI that simply halter my progress? no, thank you. i want my next dialogue tree, please.
but some people, for reasons i will never understand, thrive on the punishment and want to keep trying, again and again. me, i don't have enough windows to throw my controllers through. -

it makes sense for the era, but i sense we'll get one eventually. if they did use a female character, they could have used the opportunity to show her overcoming the sexism of the time. that would have made it interesting, whereas showing the men around her suddenly seeing her as an equal would make no sense. like an openly gay man being the protagonist of MAD MEN.
besides, not every female character has to be empowered or strong. i'm sick of all this walking on egg shells when it comes to gender or race. the devs shouldn't have to clarify and explain how much they respect women and aren't racists and homophobes. just use whatever character you want and be done with it. all this apologizing and carefully worded statements are ridiculous. also, the people saying that a female assassin would be 'sexy' are precisely the reason female characters end up on 'top ten butts in gaming' lists.
not everything in this world is motivated by sexism, racism etc. i'm tired of it always being brought up.
