Gamespot's All Time Greatest Hero vote might be the final straw for me.
All Time Greatest Joke?
I initially thought that this was a great idea, but held off initially voting as I had suspicions as to how Gamespot was allowing votes. So after a few days of tracking a few "key" sites I start looking through the votes, and while a few are on par with what I generally see the Gamespot population talking about, others are curiously way, way off. These sites (Bing, Google and you will easily find them) are encouraging their users to come here and essentially destroy this event. And where are we now? The voting has become an absolute joke in some instances (The 'Master Chief' vs. 'Bub & Bob' is the best example)... Event effectively destroyed. Why Do I Care?
I care because I am a long standing member of Gamespot yet they appear to be letting this "contest" go on. How can I remain a member of a "game" site that doesn't respect it's content, or more importantly, it's users? The only thing that I can fathom is that they are letting this go on because of the press that they will get for hosting a contest where their "users" picked Bub & Bob over Master Chief. And oh, the press that you will get. However, A clearly manipulated vote such as this makes you look like a joke, and (again, more importantly) it makes your users look like a joke. What is the incentive for a gamer to remain at a site that has been accused of (via a pretty convincing case) taking cash for review scores, and now seems to be taking site hits/impressions over legitimacy? If this is allowed to continue then these guys are going to have another shirt: http://www.splitreason.com/productdetail.php?id=531.What Should Gamespot Do?
First: Transparency is the best policy. Second: Admit that the contest was manipulated and tell us that you are rectifying the issue. Third: Only allow registered members AND require that they be a set level (something like 5) to be able to participate in things like this. The Final Straw
If they let this go on as is, then yup. This actually might be it. After Seven years as a member (often a paying member) I will simply cancel my current membership and stop coming here. There are plenty of other game sites out there. Why participate at one that so clearly does not care about being legit? Answer: There is no reason.- Posted Sep 5, 2009 11:56 am PT
