My thoughts on repetition......
In all truth and honesty, I don't really think that repetition is too bad....
When reviewers say that a game is seriously repetitive, I wonder... is that really such a bad thing?
When doing an action is just so much fun, doing it over and over and over and over and over and over again just doesn't get old. It's like Devil May Cry 3. If you read reviews of DMC3, you'll realize that basically none of them criticize it of getting repetitive. And why not? DMC3 goes like this: Kill this wave of enemies. Then solve one or two puzzles, and go that way, and kill that boss, and rinse and repeat for 20 missions.
How about Max Payne 2? No reviews ever criticized it of being repetitive. But, what do you do? Go into this room, kill all these guys with slow motion and shoot-dodging. So, why did everyone say that Stranglehold was repetitious? If Stranglehold is repetitious, wot about Max Payne 1 and 2? Cheh....
All these games with really high scores - Batman Arkham Asylum, God of War 1, 2 and CoO, DMC 1, 3, 4, Ninja Gaiden, and Splinter Cell, were never criticized of being repetitive, even though they really are quite repetitive.
I think that game reviewers only state that a game is repetitive if they dislike the game, and want to give more reason to criticize it. And yes, Red Faction: Guerilla is an exception, but still.
