Top 5 Monday: Favourite Movie Villains of All Time
My original plan for the next Top 5 ****day (i decided to free myself from restricting only on Sundays cuz, for obvious reasons, I never ever keep my promises that are made online) was not this, but something more crazier, but that list is actually not complete yet, so here it goes.
NOTE: I. Never. Ever. Watch. Any. Horror. Movies. Period.
And I'm not really deep with movies, so my selection maybe very different from others, but here they are.
My top 5 favourite movie (live action only) villains of all time.
5. Hans Landa (Inglourious Basterds, played by Christoph Waltz)
As relatively new film, being released this year, Quentine Tarantino's latest epic features spaghetti-westernized WWII themed motion picture with cheesy-but-awesome macaronni combats, and a bone-chilling villain that is sure to be up in the list of the best villains of at least this decade. Nicknamed "The Jew Hunter", Hans Landa is an illustrious SS Colonel who is responsible for countless Jewish families in France being sent to the camps. Now, the movie is completely fictional, so the character of Hans Landa never existed, nor does the film tries to convince the audience that he did, but one can't help oneself from being amazed and chilled at the same time by both his charms and cruelty that he emits throughout the film. Christoph Waltz also has my vote for next year's Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. And I'm sure he will win the Globe.
I mean, this guy speaks 4 languages fluently. He's gotta win something. (and he did, in Cannes Film Festival, but more recognition is needed for this brilliant performance)
4. Amon Goeth (Schindler's List, played by Ralph Fiennes)
Another blood-thirsty Nazi SS leader, Amon Goeth from probably the best film ever made shocks the audience with his unspeakable cruelties that he commits throughout the film, and shocks them once more since he and what he did were all true. The sniping scene is irrefutably the most shocking scene in motion pictures of 90's, and I personally think this even surpasses the so-called controversial "No Russian" mission of Modern Warfare 2 as an insignificant follower. Amon Goeth is also amazingly well played by Ralph Fiennes, possibly one of the best depictions of a Nazi officer of all time, and Fiennes best performance in his entire career.
However, the factor that raises Amon Goeth's status of an evil villain to an amazing villain is not because of his cruelty, nor Ralph Fiennes' excellent performance, but rather, how incomplete he is as a human being. The inner-conflict that he faces in question of Helen Hirsch, a jewish maid whom he secretly loves, makes him a superb character that explores both the hypocrisy and feeble instabilities of human nature. Without him, I don't believe Schindler's List could have been enjoying the success of this magnitude.
3. Darth Vader (Star Wars series, played by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones)
I really don't think I need an introduction for this guy, other than the reason why he is NOT the 1st. Darth Vader has always been my favourite villain of all time until recently, and the dethroning of the king is not because I grew old of him, but rather the others were too good. I still believe Empire Strikes Back is one of the best films ever made, and Star Wars (classic trilogy only) is still one of my favourite series of all time. ALL TIME.
2. Joker (The Dark Knight, played by Heath Ledger)
Heath Ledger was one of my favourite actors even before he gained massive public attention for his untimely death in February of 2008. I truly was sad for his death, because A Knight's Tale, which Ledger stars as the main character, is one of my favourite films of all time --wait, cross that out, it's one of my whole family's favourite films of all time. But never did I expect a performance of this magnitude when The Dark Knight stormed the theatres. Joker, quite literally, blew me away. His character, the performance, the psychopathic attributes, and the frightening charms all come together and form one of the most brilliant characters of all time. He symbolizes pure evil, ironically created by men themselves, and his presence in the film not only darkens the Gotham even more, but also acts as a character that is so similar yet so different compared to the Dark Knight himself.
May he rest in peace.
1. Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men, played by Javier Bardem)
I am not sure how many of people I know in Gamespot have actually seen this movie, but I believe this is one of those movies that are so good, that it deserves to be in the class of Schindler's List, Godfather, and To Kill a Mockingbird. And I still don't understand the movie yet!
Really, if you want to know why this guy is absolutely the best villain of all time, you need to see this movie. Very complicated, yet amazingly well-crafted thriller, No Country for Old Men succeeds not only because of Coen brothers' excellent direction and the classic source material, but also of Anton Chigurh's bone-chilling charisma.
Those who didn't make it to the list, but still deserves honourable mention are Longshanks, King Edward I (Braveheart, Patrick McGoohan), Frank Costello (The Departed, Jack Nicholson), Messala (Ben-Hur, Stephen Boyd), Angel Eye (The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Lee Van Cleef), and T-1000 (Teminator 2: Judgment Day, Robert Patrick).
As I said earlier, I don't watch horror movies, so no Hannibal Lector, sorry.
ps. I finally sent all my application to universities.
Film Screenwrting in York University (which i really don't think i can make. they take 10 students each year), History/Political Science in University of Toronto (this is where I'll probably end up. It's almost guaranteed that i make it to here), Sciences in McGill University, Journalism in Carleton University, and Film Studies in University of Western Ontario.
Now I gotta make up a portfolio for Film Screenwriting in York.- Posted Dec 21, 2009 1:25 am PT

8 Facts about myself
I forgot who it was but someone tagged me, so here it goes.
8 facts about myself you really won't hear from anywhere else because I'mjust damn too unknown. Let's kick this pig.
8. I'm Korean Canadian
- That means I'm a Canadian citizen with Korean ethnical background. I actually refuse to call myself a Korean, but rather Korean Canadian, and I'm proud of that. Doesn't mean that I have abondoned my Korean culture, rather I'm proud of that, but I'm not really hot for their politics which reminds me of UFC.
7. I think Queen is the best music group ever
- Actually, this is not about myself. This is just a fact. Cannot be refuted. you know why? Because Freddie Mercury is the best musician since Mozart, Beethoven and my personal favourite, Chopin.
6. My Korean blog is nearing half million total visiters
- My Blog Rocks. Period. You should come and visit too. The awesomeness of my blog is so good that it goes beyond the human language and unites every single hardcore anime people together. I think.
5. For every character name (or save file) that is related to gaming, I use the name "Shana".
- And I freaking hate Shana. Don't Know what happened. It's kinda like my ID (funsohng), which is pretty much used with every single website I use. I just use it, and it just became the standard.
4. I'm pretty sure my last name is used by only 3 people on this planet, including me
- My dad, and my sister is the other two ppl. Yes, that means my Grandpa has different surname when anglicized.
3. My dream has always been to write a book when I grow up
- My dream occupation have always changed as the time passed, but since I was grade 5, I always wanted to write my own book, preferably fiction. And I don't see that dream diminishing away anytime soon.
Funny, I never liked READING books.
2. I've been listening to this song only for last 5 days
- And I.... don't really know why.
1. I don't drink anything other than Iced Tea (Nestea only, I refuse to drink Brisk) or Coke Zero
- Anything else, with exception of diet coke or pepsi, I refuse to drink. In fact, I dont think I have drank a normal original coke for few years now.
Liquors don't count, I'm still underage. I am a law-abiding citizen and I don't drink (except for wine in some occasion)
since it's kinda weird to have a post without image, here's a random one
Once again, I cannot emphasize more that I am not targetting a specific group with all these pics.
I mean, no offence. This is perfectly innocent.
